Thomas Brown the son of William Brown, was born February 28, 1753, in Augusta County Va. The name of his mother is not shown, -When Thomas was ayouth [sic] , his father moved from Augusta Co Va to Rowan Co N C; thence to the Waxhaw settlement in South Carolina and was a neighbor to Mrs Jackson, mother of General Andrew Jackson, whom Thomas Brown knew as a boy. While residing in the Waxhaw settlement, Thomas Brown�s father apprenticed him to a hatter, who moved to Tryon Co N C taking Thomas with him. While residing in Tryon, that part which was later Rutherford, Co NC, Thomas Brown, enlisted March 1776, and served 7 weeks as a private in Capt James McFadden�s company, Col James Grimes� N C regiment; after this service was concluded, he went to the home of his father in South Carolina enlisted there June 1 1776, served as a substitute for his father for six weeks as a private in Capt John Barkley�s company, Col Joseph Kershaw�s S C regiment, marched to Charleston where he was employed as a guard or sentinel and witnessed the attack on Sullivan�s Island; in a few days after the expiration of this service Thomas Brown volunteered in Charleston, served as a private in Capt John Kenedy�s company Col Joseph Kershaw�s S C regiment and was discharged Sept 1776, served 6 weeks in Capt George Dunlap�s Co, Col Joseph Ker [sic?] Kershaw�s S C regiment and in October 1776 reenlisted and served and served [sic] six weeks at Charleston, in Capt John Barkley�s Co, Col Joseph Kershaw�s S C regiment, after the expiration of this tour, he started for his father�s home in the Waxhaw settlement, and while on the road, met some troops from NC, among whom was his brother, William Brown and decided to enlist with these N C troops and served in Capt Wm Houston�s company, Col Locke�s N C regiment and was discharged June 1777, having served six months. Again returned to his father�s home where he remained until spring of 1780, when the settlement being threatened by enemy, he and his father fled to Mecklengurg Co N C and his brothers, Alexander, Robert, and Wm Brown joined the army of the U S. While residing in said Mecklenburg Co, Thomas Brown again enlisted and served a [sic] about 27 days under Capt Oliver Wily�s company of Cavalry, N C troops. After he left the army, Thomas Brown moved to the Holston river, in what was later Sullivan Co Tenn where he remained several years, then moved to Warren Co Tenn, where he remained several years, where he had resided for about 25 years when he was allowed pension on his app. Executed Oct 8 1833.
