Marceline Beem, who did marriage and tombstone inscription databases for the NCGenWeb project, has now created a database to track migration of families into and out of North Carolina. The idea is to document the last known date that a person or family was in a particular state before coming to NC together with the earliest known date that they are known to be in a particular NC county, or conversely the last date they were in NC and the first date they can be identified somewhere else. North Carolina was a transitional state for many families who ended up elsewhere in the U.S. It was settled mostly from the north, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania in particular. Families came in and settled the land, and then as available land filled up and descendants increased in number, some moved on further south and west. Once the database begins to grow, I expect that we will be able to see clear patterns of families coming from a particular location to a specific NC county, then moving on in groups to other states. We've gone through some beta testing, and we are now ready to start incorporating real data. The site is at http://tn-3.rootsweb.com/~ncarolina/migrations.shtml and it works in much the same way that the marriage and tombstone databases do. Please drop by.
