I am interested in learning more about Locks Creek in Cumberland County, NC where many of my ancestors lived in the last few decades of the eighteenth century. Of course there was Upper Locks Creek and Lower Locks Creek. Where did Upper Locks Creek separate from Lower Locks Creek? It is my understanding that in the early 19th century canal projects were begun which make it now difficult to plot the upper reaches of Locks Creek. Where were these canal projects located and when were they begun? I am especially interested in learning the location on Locks Creek of Beaver Dam Swamp or Turkey Perch Swamp, names that were apparently used interchangeably in the 1770 time frame. Does there now exist a good map of this part of Cumberland County (other than a USGS map) which shows Locks Creek in some detail? Thanks for any help offered with these questions.
