He was killed at the Battle of King's Mountain, along with one of his young sons. His probate is filed in Caswell Co. NC, and his brother Henry Williams (d. ca 1786) was executor as earlier James's wife had been. To those of Sumter Co., SC, there is also mention of Gen. Sumter.
