In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, this might help. Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - and thus influencing as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. Many cases of people disappearing from records can be traced to their dying during an epidemic or moving away from the affected area. This site starts with 1851, which is probably the first year in which official records were kept. However, some of my ancestors moved from Currituck Co. NC and adjacent coastal Virginia to Davie County NC in the early 1800s. I've read that this move westward was prompted by several years of devastating storms on the coast, but I would like to know more details. Does anyone have a good reference for local history in this area that would give information on the weather on a yearly basis? -- Elizabeth Harris ncgen@mindspring.com NCGenWeb project: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/ Winston-Salem NC area genealogy: http://www.fmoran.com/
