    1. RE: [NCROOTS] . Birth Certificates

    3. Hi, Just a short message to join this discussion. I work part time in a funeral home, and you would be very much surprised to see how confused many survivors are in giving the correct information about the deceased to put on the death certificate. They either don't know, make a guess or can't say. Within the last month we had a situation where the survivors even gave the Social Security number of the WIDOW of the deceased rather than his. Of course when we sent the form to the local Social Security office to be processed they notified us right away of the error. They also told us that we had been given the wrong birth date for the man--survivors gave us 1925, when actually it was 1922. What I am saying--DON'T blame the funeral home--make sure the right information is given to whomever is processing the death certificate, and make sure the person who gives this information is someone who can give the CORRECT statistics. It is very hard to correct info on a death certificate after it is processed by the state where the death occurred. In the above case we had to ask for an amended death certificate and since it was close to the time of death it was easily done. Birth Certificates AMEN to both examples (birth and death certificates). My grandmother died at a Convalescent Center just a few blocks from my mother's home and my home. Recently, I got a copy of her death certificate (about 8 years later) and was shocked to find that her name was correct, but they had her mother's first name and no last name. I got a picture of the tombstone and went to the Virginia Bureau of Vital Records to get the death certificate corrected. They said I had to have a copy of marriage license and a sworn affidavit from my mother to get it corrected. It took awhile, but I was successful. I found my grandfather's mother's name was incorrect on his marriage death certificate. Since she had been married several times and he is not here to verify, I'd have to take whatever documentation I have to court to get his death certificate corrected. That means hiring a lawyer, etc. During my many trips to the Bureau of Vital Statistics, I got copies of my birth certificate and my two brothers. In each case, my mother's maiden name was spelled differently; i.e., CARMACK, CORMACK, CORMOCK. Thank goodness, mine was correct. But I was told only my brothers could get their corrected. Neither are interested in doing so. Guess it is left up to us who are searching to continue to put the pieces together.
