    1. [NCROOTS] ships Mary and Mariane

    3. Hi, has anyone ever heard of two ships called the Mary and Mariane that apparently brought settlers from England to North Carolina in the 1720s or 1730s? I'm inquiring because someone I know has a large silver tankard, made in London in 1722, with this inscription: "The gift of ye Owners of ye Mary & Mariane To Drink ye Prosperity of North Carolina." Apparently this was given to some colonists setting out for America -- and they must have been fairly important colonists to be given such an expensive parting gift -- to take with them on their journey. Any help or leads that could be offered will be much appreciated. thanks Adam

    3. This is just a guess, but could it be a gift from a tavern owner in England?
