Schweitzer's very helpful guide to NC genealogy, deeds for Edgecombe and Bertie counties in the 1732-1746 period are filed in Halifax county, which was formed from Edgecombe in 1758. My guess on NS, SS, and BS would be north side, south side, and both sides.
