    3. Many military bases have cemeteries on them as a result of their taking of land to create the base years ago. Before the base was created by Congress, there were probably dozens of family cemeteries and possibly other single graves on what it now Ft. Bragg. The military is required to take perpetual care of them as they would ball fields, yards, etc. The Public Information office on the base can probably give you information on someone that has indexed the cemeteries, or you might contact the Cumberland County Genealogical Society to see if they have a reference. As a follow up to this post, anyone looking for an index to the cemeteries for Ft. Stewart Army base (just below Savannah, GA and home of the 3rd Armored Division that fought in Desert Storm), Mr. Wyman May has published a book on them and it costs $15.00, plus $2.00 postage. His address to send your check is: P. O. BOX 523, Hinesville, GA 31310 BTW, Ft. Stewart (which covers 5 counties in GA) offers a tour of the cemeteries at least once a year and sometimes twice a year for people who may have ancestors buried there. My understanding is there are 13 cemeteries on the base and the next tour will be in November, 2001. Contact Mr. May and he can put your name down on the list to take the tour.
