I have received several that I feel sure were not sent by the person Whose name was on them. I had a bunch that contained a Virus. If there is an underscore before the return address, you can bet it is a virus. My Grandau went thru this a couple of years ago. It is a password stealing virus that send to every one but you. You can put !000 at the top of yur address book and no one is supposed to be able to get in. Wanda
Wanda I hope you are right. I put the !000 at the top of my address book. I am on RoadRunner and I have received several messages this week from people I don't know, there was no subject, no message, just an attachment which I immedidately deleted and then emptied my trash can. Once again, if anyone has received a virus that appears to have come from an NCROOTS reader, let me know privately. There's nothing I can do about Pat's problem, of course, except to extend my sympathies to her! If you need to discuss this further, please e-mail Pat privately also so we can get back to genealogical discussion on the list. Please forgive my intrusion. My wife, (Hope Stanley), asked me to skan her e-mail and forward anything important while she is away. I read of your plight and regret to tell you that, for several reasons, the "!000" trick does not work. There are just too many ways around it. I can not urge you strongly enough to go to the following web site and download the "Free" Firewall that will prevent anyone accessing your PC without your knowledge. After I had installed it on our two computers I was absolutely astonished at the frequency with which a notice would pop up on the screen, notifying me that someone was attempting to gain access to my computer. It happened so frequently that I finally set it to just block the attempt without inturrupting me to give notice. The URL is http://www.zonealarm.com/ Look down the left-hand margin until you see: "ZoneAlarm FREE Download" This free program has totally stopped free access to my PC and the often major problems I was having as a result of it. Hope, It does help, it is not 100%....It does help to also use letters. I did one using the name 123456789 and one using ABCDEFG Twice I have gotten a Hybris worm from html documents. Nothing was ever sent out to anyone.......So I have to disagree. I have a fire wall, but, that will not prevent the virus from sending your email. Only protects from hackers. Winnette --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.307 / Virus Database: 168 - Release Date: 12/11/01
Thanks! I'll try it that way. I wasn't very successful with "!000". ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greg And Winnette" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2001 4:10 PM Subject: Re: [NCROOTS] Emails > Hope, > > It does help, it is not 100%....It does help to also > use letters. > > I did one using the name 123456789 > and one using ABCDEFG > > Twice I have gotten a Hybris worm from html documents. > Nothing was ever sent out to anyone.......So I have to disagree. > > I have a fire wall, but, that will not prevent the virus from > sending your email.
