However, we often fail to read the use policy. It is possible that you (as did I) used the search program that is shown on the left side of the website page when we clicked on the URL that was provide instead of the search program at the top of the website. That search from the left side of the page takes us to ONEGREATFAMILY.COM website instead of the <http://www.awesomegenealogy.com/northcarolina_presbyteryorange17601788.shtml> site to which we expected to go. Be careful if you go left! I have copied and pasted the use policy from ONEGREATFAMILY.COM below. Besure to read the Data Use Policy and the Cancellation proceedures. I have also listed some contacts that are listed on the site. Much of this information is very difficult to get to on the site. In fact, you cannot even 'Copy and Paste' the use policy. Before you sign-up, you need to know what you are getting into. I think that I will stay away and not give them my credit card numbers. Also, please be advised that I am in no way or manner affiliated with or connected with this site or any other software or database website. - - - <<< ONEGREATFAMILY LICENSE AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF USE IMPORTANT -- READ CAREFULLY: This End-User License Agreement ("Agreement") is a legal agreement between you (the person accepting this agreement) and Z-Corp, a Utah corporation, dba OneGreatFamily.com, for the software product identified above, which includes computer software and associated electronic documentation (the "Software"). Export Control: You agree to comply with the export laws and regulations of the United States. You agree to defend, indemnify and hold OneGreatFamily.com harmless from and against any and all claims, judgments, costs, awards, expenses (including reasonable attorneys fees) and liability of any kind arising out of the non-compliance with applicable export regulation, statutes, decrees or other obligations. The obligations under this section shall survive the expiration or termination of this Agreement. Fees and Payments: Continuous Service Membership. Subscription membership in the Service is on a continuous service basis. This means that once you have become a subscribing member, your subscription will be automatically renewed and your credit card will be charged based on the subscription program (monthly, quarterly, biannually or annually) you have chosen. Credit card charges will be processed within 24 hours after subscription and products included in memberships will be shipped shortly thereafter. You may "opt out" of continuous service by clicking on "MY USER ACCOUNT" after you login from OneGreatFamily's homepage. You must "opt out" at least two days before the renewal date for the cancellation to be effective. Subscription costs may be changed by OneGreatFamily at any time and each renewal of your subscription will be at the then standard renewal cost for the period which you originally selected when you subscribed. To avoid being charged after the trial period, cancellation requests must be finalized within the trial period by following directions that will be emailed to you after we have received your cancellation request. An initial annual subscription comes with the option to cancel during the first 30 days and receive a full refund, unless the annual subscription began with a free trial period, or is a gift subscription. If you subscribe to the Service following a free trial period, the trial period takes the place of the 30 day cancellation period. No refund will be provided following completion of the free trial period. The 30 day refund period begins on the day you register for the subscription Service, which is also the day you are given access to the subscriber features of the Service. Cancellations during the 30 days must be made by calling us at 1-801-491-3414 and providing the same information that you provided when you subscribed. Your cancellation call must be received by end of business (5:00 p.m. Mountain Time) on the 30th subscription day. Refunds are subject to return of goods. Please allow a reasonable time for the refund to reach you or be charged back to your credit card if you have subscribed by credit card. All other subscriptions including, monthly, quarterly, biannual subscriptions or annual renewals, may be canceled by you at any time but no refund will be made for unused subscription periods. Most of these bills would close or reduce access to records we use. Mic is the owner of Barnett Books and is a regular vendor at our Seminar. Last year his large area was in the middle of the vendor room. He also writes a Saturday column for the Houston Chronicle. Please read the message and get on the mail list and write letters to let your representatives know how you feel. Otherwise, we may lose even more access to the records. Thanks, James Hollas AGS President ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Everyone: As the Texas Liaison for the Joint (National Genealogical Society/Federation of Genealogical Societies) NGS-FGS Records Preservation and Access Committee I have set up both a website and email mailing list to aid us in lobbying the Texas Legislature. The Legislature currently has several bills pending which seek to close records to the public. Information about these bills is on the website. This website is a place where we can post information about particular bills and how to locate legislators to contact. The mailing list is designed as a forum for us genealogists to communicate quickly and be able to coordinate activities in quick mode should we have to do so. And we already have to do so. There is a hearing at 1:30 or whenever the committee earlier in the day adjourns- for the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee discussing SB81 and SB 85 which both want to close DD214-Military Discharge records in the county clerk's offices. The hearing will be held in the Betty King Committee Room in Austin. Anyone who attend is asked to do so I have included others from states outside the Republic of Texas in this email so they can see what we are doing here. They might wish to monitor what we do or just follow our lead and do something similar in their own state. The website is located at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com There is a page on the website where one may go to subscribe to the mailing list, however you may do so by following the attached directions The mailing list may be subscribed to by sending an email to TXLEGNOTES-L-request@rootsweb.com in the message area of the email type subscribe. There is a digest mode at TXLEGNOTES-D-request@rootsweb.com but it may be held up 12 hours before being sent. For speedier mail, at least during the legislative season when it might count, I would recommend subscribing to the L mode rather than the D mode. After the legislative season there may not be anything to say on this list. It will already have been said and voted upon. The basic things to be concerned with at his point is about 8 bills pending in the House and the Senate which aim to close DD214/Military Discharges in Texas. Plus two new bills, one in the House and one in the Senate wanting to extend the time birth records are closed in Texas from 50 years to 75 years. Plus a bill wanting to close marriage applications to the public. Plus TEXSHARE/TIFF funding for schools and libraries and electronic database access. Plus HIPPA which I don't know much about but which is expected to go into effect April 14 and will probably close records which have medical records or information in them. This bill effects insurance and medical companies and offices. I remember hearing some people talking about this last week they were not into genealogy. Now I have had someone in a county clerk's office ask me about the same thing and said it may affect their records. So, we may have to address this problem, too. The whole crux of closing public records is all about Identity Theft and the fear of it. People feel that if a record is available for use someone must be stealing their identity. So, Identity theft and how to protect public records from thieves and convince public officials not to pass laws closing them is going to be our goal at least as I envision it. Please pass this email to everyone in every society. We will need some some numbers to show the legislature we care. We are starting late in the legislative season and are therefore already behind. Thanks, MIC -- James Hollas 7704 Evaline Ln Austin, Tx 78745 (512) 280-1415 ------=_NextPart_000_0099_01C2EDAE.C21D7CC0--

    3. According to the North Carolina Gazetteer, Bethania is in western Forsyth County on Muddy Creek. It was settled 1759 and incorporated 1839 but not now active in municipal affairs. Names by the Moravians, whose second or "new town" it was, for the Biblical town of Bethany. Refugees during the French and Indian War found protection within the Bethania stockade and many of them remained to build homes there. If you don't have a copy, I highly recommend North Carolina Gazetteer, a Dictionary of Tar Heel Places, compiled by William S. Powell. It is a wonderful aid to anyone interested in North Carolina. I'm happy to do look ups for anyone interested in the origin or location of obscure North Carolina towns and places. 1. [NCROOTS] African-American genealogy, Winston-Salem area
    2. Elizabeth Harris
    3. Genealogical databases will allow St. Philips visitors to trace history backwards Located in Winston-Salem, NC, the St. Philips Church complex sits nestled among the quaint Moravian buildings that make up the historic Old Salem. The St. Philips brick church is the oldest standing African American church building in North Carolina and one of the oldest in the South. African American families often have difficulty tracing family roots back into the 18th and 19th centuries. However, families with ties to the Africans and African Americans that helped build the community of Salem, NC -most of them were enslaved- will have a unique opportunity at St. Philips. Computer databases that trace family names from the early 1900's back into Salem's history will be available to any visitors with an interest in genealogy. The Moravians, a protestant group from Germany, built the St. Philips log church in 1823 in order to teach religion to those enslaved in the area. A brick church was built in 1861 in order to accommodate the growing attendance rate. In 1891, there was an addition added to the front of the church to accommodate a growing Sunday School. In front of the brick church stands the African American graveyard. Sometime during its history, all of the gravestones were taken up and placed underneath the steps and under the addition of the brick church. The Moravians were detailed record keepers. They believed in equal education for men and women. Therefore, the Moravians, as a whole, were a very literate group. Most citizens of Salem kept a daily journal. Many of those journals remain stored in the Moravian archives in Old Salem today. The Moravians' details give genealogists a unique opportunity to trace family histories. Old Salem staff and others working on the family lines of St. Philips have been able to work from the past to the present and have taken many of the names of those enslaved in Salem and followed their families out into different parts of the modern community. Many of those descendants remain in the area today and recently, the descendants of one of those enslaved, Peter Oliver, who died in 1810, had a family reunion in Winston-Salem, NC and at Old Salem. The St. Philips Church complex will reopen to the public on May 5, 2003 with a week of history and celebration. The St. Philips complex will officially become of the part of the Old Salem tour on Thursday, May 15, following the opening of the new Old Salem Visitor Center on May 14. For more information on St. Philips or any of the opening events, contact Old Salem at (336) 721-7300 or visit http://www.oldsalem.org. ###. Opening Events The week begins with a sacred rededication service on Sunday, May 4 at 4:30 p.m. The service will be led by Rev. Cedric S. Rodney of the current St. Philips congregation, located on Bonair Ave. This day will include the rededication of the church as well as the African American graveyard. Monday, May 5 at 11:30 a.m. will be the official ribbon cutting. Following the public ribbon cutting, the complex will be open free to the public from noon-5 p.m. On Thursday evening, at 7:30 p.m., in the sanctuary of the brick church, the members of the Emmanuel Baptist Church Spiritual Choir will lead attendees in an old fashioned Praise Service that was a forerunner of today's prayer meetings. The evening will be filled with music and excitement that has not been a part of the St. Philips brick church's history for over 50 years. Friday night, St. Philips will be the site of a very special free theatrical performance by Flonnie Anderson. "Celia's Salem" will begin at 7:30. Celia was one of the African Americans enslaved by the owners of the Salem Tavern. This production will serve as a poignant reproduction of the lives of those enslaved in Salem. The week of celebration concludes in a very special way on Saturday, May 10, with Masonic and Descendant's Day. At 12:00 noon, the Masons, who played a large part in the building of the reconstructed log church, will return to dedicate the site through the installation of a cornerstone and time capsule. Also in attendance on Saturday will be descendants of those people who actually lived, laughed, cried and celebrated their lives within the walls of St. Philips. The event is open to the public. from Kelli Reich <KReich@oldsalem.org>
