Corbett, p. xxiii, he states that ALBEMARLE Co. was formed in 1664 consisting of "all that partee of the province (of Carolina) which lyeth on the north east side or starboard side entring of the river Chowan now named by us Albemarle river together with the Islands and Isletts within tenn leagues thereof." Mr. Corbett quotes his source as William S. Powell's "THE NORTH CAROLINA GAZETTEER (CHAPEL HILL: UNIV. OF NC PRESS, 1968) "It covered a poorly defined 1,600 square miles." (Wm. S. Powell's " "Ye Countie of Albemarle in Carolina: A Collection of Documents, 1664-1675 (Raleigh: State Dept. of Archives and History, 1958) page 29. "The first governor, William Drummond, was appointed in 1664, and the next year the county had a legislature and courts. (Colonial Records/Vol. 1, xii-xxiii. The Gen. Assembly met in the spring of 1665 and the first record of a court in Albemarle is Nov 15, 1665. See Lindley S. Butler, "The Governors of Albemarle County, 1663-1689," North Carolina Historical Review, XLVI (Summer, 1969), 283. The county was named for George Monck, Duke of Albemarle, one of the Lords Proprietors. By 1668, Albemarle Co. was divided into Chowan, Currituck, Pasquotank and Perquimans precincts for the purposes of local administrations. Albemarle Co., the superior administrative unit of Carolina, ceased to be recognized as a unit of government in 1689 when Gov. Seth Sothel departed. His successor was commissioned gov. of 'that part of our province of Carolina that lyes north and east of Cape feare,' which was basically the whole of modern North Carolina. (Colonial REcords, Vol 1, p.360) The name Albemarle Co. continued to be applied to the region as a matter of convenience well into the eighteenth century, however, and the name Albemarle Section or Albemarle Region is in use today for the northeastern part of N.C. 3. Hello Fellow Researchers: I had the unique opportunity to attend the Utah Valley Chapter, UGA (Utah Genealogical Association) meeting of 13 Jun that was hosted by Tom Stockham, President and CEO of MyFamily.com, Inc. Although I went in fully armed with questions & complaints I had gathered in from the field, I soon found myself wanting to encourage rather than attack. You may have heard the expression of trying to take a drink from a fire hydrant that about describes my feelings about MyFamily attempting to take on the Goliath appetite of the genealogical world. The company that exists today is young, aggressive & healthy. Beyond that, they love what they do (computers and genealogy) and are energetically committed. I was impressed. It is appropriate that we accept that growing pains are part of the acquisition & merger processes. MyFamily.com owns Ancestry.com, Rootsweb.com plus have recently merged with Genealogy.com. Look for great things; but realize also that the company (I dont ! know this) probably relies on resources stemming from subscriptions. Not too involved in how this will all shake loose but I am expecting it will be good. ~ Sheila Gibson ~ SpiritHawk ~

    3. My UGA (Utah Valley Chapter) meeting tonite, Friday, June 13, is being hosted by Tom Stockham, President and CEO of MyFamily.com, Inc. There's been some confusion (and some problems) as companies have merged and changed. So glad my chapter gets this unique chance to speak with Tom in person and ask him questions. If any of you would like anything answered, let me know ASAP. Tom will be speaking on the history, vision and mission of MyFamily.com as well as the future of Ancestry.com, Rootsweb.com and about their company's recent merger with Genealogy.com. Happy to pass anything on in either direction. (LOL). --Sheila Gibson ~ Sheila Gibson ~ SpiritHawk ~ ~ Sheila Gibson ~ SpiritHawk ~

    1. [NCROOTS] Re: Keeping Photos in Family Collection
    2. This is not specifically on NCROOTS, but is in response to something posted on this list and good advice, I think, for everyone. Please skip over if only interested in NCROOTS. I would like to make a suggestion based on how important photos have been in my genealogical research. Please keep a set of these photos in your family collection for future generations. Here's my little story: In our family line, around 1900 the old family home caught fire and the house, full of photos -- even a trunk full of photos in the attic, burned to the ground. Only a few photos survived. Via the Internet I came in contact with something in Colorado researching my gr-gr-gr-gr grandparents. This lady had a collection of photos passed down from her gr-grandmother. We shared photos. The handful we had matched ones in her collection. We had names on some that she couldn't identify and vice-versa. Now we have had color laser copies of all of the photos made and dispersed to several family groups with instructions to pass them down. This helped up prove our connection with this long lost branch of the family. Think about future generations before you take those photographs out of your collection. Have a great day! I also recently posted this to the Washington DC mailing List at WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com , so if you read/post to that list, you may not want to email for another copy. I will also be posting this to other mailing lists for the southeast. Thanks!
