    1. [NCROOTS] Ella TOMLINSON & Joseph B. BLANCHARD Marriage.
    2. J.r. Smith
    3. Hello once again, fellow listers. I'm on a begging mission again, to wit; The very elusive marriage record of my maternal grandmother & grandfather, which so far cannot be found, if indeed there is one at all. >From my mom's SS-5, I have determined that my grandmother's maiden name was Ella TOMLINSON. I have been sent a 1900 census document (probably from Ancestry.com) listing her, my grandfather Joseph Benjamin BLANCHARD, his 3 kids from his marriage to Hester Brown Wilson (who died in 1889, Cabell Co., WV), and the two daughters (my aunts) of Joseph & Ella, so I know it is the right one ! This census is of Cabell Co., WV. It declares that Joe & Ella have been "married" for 7 years = 1893. It further declares that Ella was born in July, 1870, in WV., and that both parents were born in WV. Now, I know that all the usual search engines, (especially the 1880 census) kicks out just ONE Ella Tomlinson, who was born Aug. 1869, Moundsville, Marshall Co., WV., to Alfred & Mary Tomlinson. I also have a 1900 census doc for them, from the same source as the one for Joseph & Ella, and on it, THIS Ella Tomlinson is still single and living with Alfred & Mary, still in Moundsville, Marshall Co., WV. so if it is to be believed, the Moundsville Ella Tomlinson is NOT the right one. I've got loads of info on Joseph (of Gates Co., NC), and can trace his line all the way back to 1758. It's Ella that's giving me fits. I very much want to determine who her parents were, and as I see it right now, the only way to do that is to find a marriage record for Joseph & Ella. But, I can only use the usual internet sources such as the LDS site, et al., and so far I can find no such record, and even a few folks have tried, without success I might add, using their subscription to Ancestry.com in searching for such a record. So, I'm hoping and praying that one of you kind souls that has marriage books for southern WV for 1890 to 1895 will take the time to have a look on my behalf. I say southern WV, because that's where she was born, and still was present in Cabell Co., WV in 1900, and in Fayette Co., WV in 1910. So, although Joseph was a railroad fireman (apparently) and got around all over the place and could have met Ella almost anywhere, I'm assuming it to have been in southern WV that they met & married. Perhaps it is noteworthy that my Mom had close emotional ties with people in the Talcott, Summers Co., WV area. How and to whom, I have no idea. Thanks well in advance, Jay R. Smith Toledo, OHIO

    1. [NCROOTS] Drury Collier VA - NC
    2. Teresa
    3. Looking for information on Drury COLLIER, b. abt 1740-45? Brunswick Co VA; d. 1809 NC. Am trying to find out who he married, who his children were ( one son named Drury, possibly a daughter Sarah ; 3 other sons and one other daughter). Particularly interested in finding out if he had a daughter named Rebecca Collier, b. abt 1783 NC who married (probably in Lincoln Co NC) Reuben LOLLAR. Timeline for Drury Collier: 13 Nov 1759 - named in the will of his father William Collier in Brunswick Co VA. (note William was son of John Collier JR and Grace? LUCAS.) 28 Oct 1776 - Purchased 215 ac from John and Barnett Randle on Saw Scaffold Branch in Brunswick Co VA. 02 June 1778 - posted security for the estate of Benjamin Warren in Brunswick Co VA. (could his wife have been a Warren ? There are other Warrens who intermarried with the Colliers) Colonial America, 1607-1789 Census Index shows Drury Collier in Montgomery Co NC in 1780 1781 - witnessed the will of Christopher Christian in Montgomery Co NC. 1790 Anson Co NC, Fayette district: Collier, Drury........2-3-3-0-8 1793 - Witnessed the will of his cousin Also Collier in Northampton Co NC. 1800 Anson Co NC: Drury Collier .... 00001 / 00000 1809 Lincoln Co NC - will of Drury Collier filed. (listed in NC Wills; A Testator Index , by Mitchell, pg 103) For whatever reason, this will was never probated in Lincoln Co; could be a copy from another county because he had interests or heirs in Lincoln Co, or perhaps there wasn't enough estate left to probate if he had deeded his estate to heirs prior to his death.) In the 1810 census, Drury Collier (JR) is in Lincoln Co; he married 1817 in Lincoln Co, Rebecca SADLER. This family went to Perry Co MO. ) Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks. 1. [NCROOTS] Will Terminology
    2. I have abstracts of two pre 1800 wills in which parties (in one will) obviously related to the testator (sons) are referred to as "trusty friends" . These individuals are executors of the will. In the second will an executor is referred to as "friend" although I have strong suspicions that the friend is actually a brother. Is anyone aware if it was a common practice in this time period to refer to relations as friends rather than their relationship to the testator? Incidentally, the first will was probated in GA although these were NC folks removed to GA. The second will was Proved in Rowan Cty., NC. Mike Daniel

    1. [NCROOTS] Grandparents Marriage Record.
    2. J.r. Smith
    3. Well folks, I'm back, begging again !!! I finally obtained the SS-5 for my Mom, and thus determined that my maternal grandmother's name was Ella TOMLINSON. There's a lot of Ella Tomlinson's out there from the right era. I now need to find the marriage record of Ella TOMLINSON and Joseph Benjamin BLANCHARD, which had to have occured c. 1892, =/- a couple, based on census document info. However, I have no idea where it took place, or if it took place at all. I know he was the son of Josiah Blanchard of Gates Co., NC, he was born there c. 1845, and that he showed up in WV, where he married Hester B. Wilson in 1879, and she died in 1889. The LDS website produces no hits. I am hoping & praying that someone can check Ancestry.com (which I can't afford), or perhaps have books of marriage records for that era, that can check for me. I've found that most marriage search engines produces no results, too many results, or hands you off to Ancestry.com. My very sincerest thanks, well in advance. Were it not for good folks like you, I'd be nowhere with my research. Jay R. Smith Toledo, OHIO
