    3. Fred, these aren't towns in that time frame . . . they are counties. ROWAN (which is correct spelling) was once a huge county covering almost the hole half of NC from the central area westward. Someone on the list has a site location of which counties formed from others, and also possibly what their boundaries looked like way back then. This site starts with 1851, which is probably the first year in which official records were kept. However, some of my ancestors moved from Currituck Co. NC and adjacent coastal Virginia to Davie County NC in the early 1800s. I've read that this move westward was prompted by several years of devastating storms on the coast, but I would like to know more details. Does anyone have a good reference for local history in this area that would give information on the weather on a yearly basis? -- Elizabeth Harris ncgen@mindspring.com NCGenWeb project: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/ Winston-Salem NC area genealogy: http://www.fmoran.com/
