    1. [NCROOTS] BLANCHARD, Gordon B.; Maggie E or L; Mary Cleveland.
    2. J.r. Smith
    3. Hello fellow listers. Is anyone researching any, or all, of the above named people ??? Their mother was Hester Brown Wilson Blanchard, who died in 1889, and is buried in Cabell Co., WV, and, who married Joseph Benjamin Blanchard in 1879 in Cabell Co. Hester & Joseph (from NC), produced Gordon B., b Sept 1880, Maggie E. (or L) b Oct 1883, and Mary Cleveland b Dec 1886, presumably all in Cabell Co. Joseph B. Blanchard was my grandfather, as the result of his 'marriage', in 1892/3, to one Ella Tomlinson, (my grandmother), after the death of Hester. Joseph & Ella produced, in addition to the 3 above, 3 daughters, Leah, b Sept 1894. Naomi, b June 1896, both born in Cabell Co., and finally, Wilma L. (my mother), born 12 July, 1906 in Fayette Co., WV. Joseph, Ella and the 6 kids are listed in the 1900 Cabell Co., census. What I'm seeking is information on the parents of Ella Tomlinson Blanchard, a name which, alone, smacks me into the proverbial brick wall. I'm thinking that perhaps inasmuch as she was the step-mother to Gordon, Maggie and Mary, that a researcher just might have information on Ella's parentage. Any help greatly appreciated, for which I give thanks in advance. Respectfully, Jay R. Smith Toledo, OHIO

    1. [NCROOTS] Martin Family Update
    2. Lilly
    3. This is NEW information just found: William Martin, b. about 1820, give or take 5 years, born in NC. He died between 1880 and 1869, either in TX or TN. He married Mary Young b. 1825 NC, both of her parents were born NC. William and Mary had 2 children in NC: Nathaniel Martin b. 1837 NC and George Wesley Martin b. 1850 NC. Then the entire Martin family moved to TN and had the following children: Caroline Martin b. 8-22-1854 TN; Basley Martin b. 1865 TN; Joseph Allen Martin b. 1867 TN and Margaret Martin b. 1869 TN. Sometime between 1869 and 1880 the entire Martin family moved to Navarro Co., TX. The father Willian is dead as of 1880 census, his wife Mary is shown as a widow. Mary is surrounded by the households of her 2 married sons: Nathaniel and George Wesley Martin, and as of 1880 she still has 4 children still at home. There is an Edward Martin b. 1850 NC, both parents born NC who is also nearby, and may be a son of Mary Young Martin as well. This Martin family begins in NC as of 1820 approx, then as of 1854 they are in TN, then as of 1880 they are in Navarro Co TX. It sounds to me as though this Martin family is following an Indian migration pattern, similar to the Cherokee Indian tribe of NC migration to Western areas. (migration/removal) My older brother told me we are "Oklahoma Indians". But perhaps his story is such because my Father was born in Oklahoma, but his father was born in TX, and his father in TN, and his father in NC. Perhaps the "Oklahoma Indian" ancestry story is referring to a "North Carolina Indian " ancestry, which came west eventually. I have not begun to search for NC or TN Cherokee Indian records, but thought I would let everyone know I will be doing that , but I need help and advice from any Native American Martin researchers who might give me some pointers, based on my ancestry here told. The other possiblity is, that my Martin line has no Native American ancestry, and we only followed the same migration route as the Cherokee from NC. Best regards, Lillian Kathleen Martin, d/o Billy Joe Martin b. OK, s/o Joe Alfred Martin b. TX, s/o Joe Allen Martin b. TN, s/o William Martin b. NC and Mary Young b. 1825 NC.

    1. [NCROOTS] Martin Family: NC>TN>TX>OK Doolen: KY>IL>TX
    2. Lilly
    3. My father is: Billy Joe Martin b. 6-28-1925 Duncan, Stephens Co., OK d. 11-29-1972 Fresno, Fresno Co., CA. His parents were: Joe Alfred Martin b. 2-12-1899 TX d. 8-28-1968 Marlow, Stephens Co, OK. Joe A. Martin grew up in Sunset, Montague Co., TX. He worked 43 years for Lone Star Gas Co, both in TX and OK. He was a Masonic Leader. Henrietta Keller b. 1906 OK IT, near Cornish, OK, the daughter of William Keller and Susie Jane Campbell. Joe A. Martin later married Ora B. Gandy of Marlow, OK. The parents of Joe Alfred Martin: Joseph Allen Martin b. July 1867 TN d. after 1930 census, probably in Montague Co. TX. He married Nancy Elizabeth Doolen b. 1861 TX. She was the daughter of Willian Doolen b. 1820 IL and Sarah Foster b. 1825 IL. William Doolen is recorded as one of the earliest settlers to Navarro Co. TX. He died in 1865 at Texarkana, Bowie Co., TX. (The name ALFRED, is a Doolen family name). The Doolen family was at Marion Co., IL prior to coming to Navarro Co., TX. Both Joe Allen Martin b. 1867 TN and Nancy Doolen b. 1861 TX were raised in District 126, Navarro Co., TX. They are both listed there on the 1880 census, both of them living with their widowed Mother's. There are several Martin and Doolen families of Dist 126 Navarro Co TX in the 1880 census, I have listed them all, and believe they are related. If you are researching any Martin or Doolen surnames in Navarro Co TX for the time frame of 1880 onward, please write back. The Doolen family is KY to IL to TX. The Martin family is NC to TN to TX. Joe Allen Martin and Nancy E. Doolen had the following children: May W., Dan L., Jesse, Joe Alfred, Jim D., and Roy B. Martin. As of 1930 census Joe Allen Martin is living with a second wife, Nora Martin, born in TX, in Montague Co TX. Joe Allen Martin b. 1867 TN lived in Montague Co., TX from about 1900 census to 1930 census. I don't have a death date for him yet. I also don't know when Nancy Doolen Martin died, but probably prior to 1920 census. The 1920 census at Montague Co TX has Dan L. Martin and wife Ada B. Unknown b. 1889 AL, both are school teachers there. My grandfather Joe Alfred Martin b. 1899 TX was in 1920 census at Montague Co., TX. The 1930 census at Grady Co., OK. He also lived in Vernon, Willbarger Co, TX from 1940 through 1962, when he retired to Marlow, Stephens Co., OK. He died there in 1968. The 1880 census at District 126, Navarro Co., TX shows Mary Martin b. 1825 NC, she is a widow. Both her parents are born in NC. I do NOT know the name of her dead husband, Mr. Martin, but he was also born in NC. Mary Unknown b. 1825 NC and Mr. Martin b. NC lived in TN, because all their children are listed as born in TN, prior to coming to District 126, Navarro Co., TX. So this Martin family is NC to TN to TX as of 1880 census. They left TN sometime after 1856. This Mr. Martin is the right age for Civil War service, most likely from TN, as his children are being born there in the War years. Mary Martin and Mr. Martin had the following children: Caroline Martin b. 1856 TN Basley Martin b. 1865 TN Joseph Allen Martin b. 1867 TN Margaret Martin b. 1869 TN In the 1880 census Mary Martin, the widow, is living next door to Wesley Martin b. 1850 NC, both his parents b. NC. This looks like Wesley is a son of Mary Martin b. 1825 NC. 4 houses down from Mary Martin is Nathaniel Martin b. 1837 NC. This might be a brother to Mary Martin's dead husband. 4 doors down on the other side of Mary is George Doolen b. 1850 IL, the cousin of William Doolen b. 1820 IL, the father of Nancy Elizabeth Doolen, the future bride of Joe Allen Martin. The 1880 census at Dist 126, Navarro Co, TX shows Sarah (Foster) Doolen b. 1825 IL, widow of William Doolen, living with her 2 kids: Nancy Elizabeth Doolen b. 1861 TX and Wesley Simpson Doolen b. 1864 TX. If you recognise a IL family, or NC family or TN family or TX family which appear to be related, please write back. Best regards, Lillian Kathleen Martin

    1. [NCROOTS] Elliott, Jehu, Branson, Connor, Rogers, Richman, Barnard, Smith, Blair, Marshall
    2. This book has no cover, and no index, and no author. I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches: Other surnames mentioned in the biography of WILLIAM H. ELLIOTT are, Elliott, Jehu, Branson, Connor, Rogers, Richman, Barnard, Smith, Blair, Marshall WILLIAM H. ELLIOTT was one of several men of the Elliott family whose careers have brought special distinction to the name in Indiana and particularly in their home City of Newcastle. William H. Elliott was a soldier, naval officer, lawyer and publisher, and after the Spanish-American war accomplished a notable work in organizing the civil administration of the Island of Porto Rico. The first lawyer to locate at Newcastle was Abraham Elliott, who was born in Gilbert County, North Carolina. During the eighteenth century the Elliotts were among the numerous representatives of the Quaker or Friends Church who lived in Western North Carolina. He joined the exodus of Quakers that set in about the close of the century and which brought to Eastern Indiana one of the finest elements of citizenship in the state. He lived in Wayne County and in 1809 was appointed justice of the peace, before Wayne County was organized. In 1822 he was admitted to the bar of Henry County, and in the following year established what has always been known as the Elliott farm, near Newcastle. He practiced law, served as justice of the peace and associate judge. His son, Judge Jehu T. Elliott, was born near Richmond in Wayne County, February 7, 1813, and after the family moved to Henry County he shared in the labors of developing a pioneer farm. His educational opportunities were limited, and largely through his own efforts and determination he achieved a brilliant place at the Indiana bar and bench and was recognized as one of the ablest intellects of the state. He taught school, at the age of twenty began the study of law, and after being admitted to the bar quickly won eminence as an attorney. He served as assistant secretary and secretary of the House of Representatives in the State Legislature, in 1838 was elected prosecuting attorney, in 1889 was sent to the State Senate and in 1844, when only thirty-one years of age, was elected circuit judge of a circuit embracing eight counties. Following the practice of the times, he rode horseback in company with members of the bar from county seat to county seat over his large district. In 1851 he was reelected, but in 1852 resigned and for two years devoted his time to his duties as president of a company engaged in building a railroad from Richmond to Chicago. In 1855 he was again elected circuit judge and in 1864 was called to the supreme bench of Indiana as one of the justices. After six years he resumed his private law practice, which he continued until his death on February 12, 1876. William H. Elliott was a son of Judge Jehu T, and Hannah (Branson) Elliott and was born at Newcastle July 4, 1844. He ran away from home to become a soldier at the time of the Civil war, and later was sent to the United States Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1865. He was commissioned ensign in November, 1866, a master in 1868 and lieutenant in October, 1869. Because of ill health he resigned April 20, 1870. He had some interesting experiences while in the navy. He was on Admiral Perry’s flagship of the United States fleet, which opened up the Island Empire of Japan to the commerce of the world. After leaving the navy he studied law, joined his father in practice at Newcastle, but the work to which he devoted meet of his active years while at Newcastle was in publishing the Newcastle Courier. He bought this paper in 1877 and was personally identified with its management until 1899. In 1898 he volunteered, when the United States declared war on Spain, and although at that time in his forty-fourth year he was commissioned a lieutenant in the navy, became executive officer of the Leonidas and in January, 1899, President McKinley appointed him director-general of posts of Porto Rico. In this capacity he reorganized the postal system of the island and had it in efficient operation before he resigned, June 6, 1900. He was then appointed by President McKinley as commissioner of interior for the Island of Porte Rico, and continued his valuable services in the reconstruction of the island until December 1, 1904, when he resigned. He then resumed his work as publisher at Newcastle, and lived in that city until his death, December 10, 1914. William H. Elliott married, October 20, 1876, Miss Emma Connor, who was born in Henry County, Indiana, July 6, 1855. She continues to make her home at Newcastle, residing with her daughter, Miss Ruth, at 1002 Indiana Avenue. Mrs. Elliott is a daughter of Levi and Lucinda (Rogers) Connor, her father a native of Nova Scotia and her mother of Henry County, Indiana. Mrs. Elliott for many years has been active in the Methodist Episcopal Church, having been a member of the choir for several years, belongs to the Missionary Society, is a member of the Woman’s Club, the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic, belongs to the Eastern Star and is a member of the board now building a new hospital for Newcastle. Mrs. Elliott had four children: George A., deceased; Hannah F., wife of John F. Richman, of Muncie, Indiana; Jean, Mrs. Ralph W. Barnard, of Kansas City, Missouri; and Miss Ruth Elizabeth. The son, George Armentrout Elliott, was born at Newcastle March 25, 1878, and died March 2, 1925. The best years of his life were devoted to the Newcastle Courier, a paper that was founded nearly ninety years ago and for more than half a century has been owned by the Elliott family. George A. Elliott was educated in Newcastle, graduated from high school in 1897, and subsequently attended Indiana University for a few months. He went to Porte Rico as private secretary to his lather and was in the island until August, 1902, assisting his father in the establishment of the postal and telegraph system. On returning to Newcastle he acquired an interest in the Newcastle Courier and since his death this old newspaper has continued under the ownership of Mrs. George Elliott, who is assisted in its management by her son in-law, Mr. Marshall. George A. Elliott in 1917 was elected mayor of Newcastle. He was chairman of the Henry County Liberty Loan Committee and treasurer of the Henry County War Chest Fund during the World war. He was a Knight Templar Mason and Shriner and a member of several other fraternities, was president of the Boy Scout Council and in all respects he measured up to the reputation of the Elliott family for high-minded devotion to the public welfare. George A. Elliott married in 1900 Miss Lillian Smith, who was born in Minnesota, daughter of J. E. and Antis (Blair) Smith; her father a native of Elmira, New York, and her mother of Ripley County, Indiana. Her father was a dry goods merchant in Minnesota, in South Dakota, in Cleveland, Tennessee, Bowling Green, Kentucky, and in 1898 established himself in business at Newcastle. He died in 1927 and his widow resides in Newcastle. Mrs. George A. Elliott was educated in a private school and in Potter College at Bowling Green, Kentucky. She is an active member of several literary and social clubs, and has been chairman of the art committee of the Newcastle Historical Society. She has three children, who represent the fifth generation of the Elliott family in Henry County. Her daughter Frances Blair is the wife of Mr. Alfred Marshall, Jr., of Newcastle and the two younger children are Miss Martha Lee and John Smith. The son is a student in Culver Military Academy.
