Thanks for the update Rob! :-) Looking into the past is always interesting . . . . just when you think you have something factual, something else comes along to challenge your initial information. Appreciate you sending this along to me and the list, since now I'll have a reference point. Next time I go to the Archives, I'll see what I can gather on this. BOB, You might want to look closer at that document. According to The Handybook for Genealogist, present day Washington Co., NC, was established from Terrell in 1799, not 1779. The early Washington County, NC, a portion of which is now Washington County, Tennessee, was formed in 1777 in the Western Territory of North Carolina and covered what is now the whole state of Tennessee and parts of some present day counties of western North Carolina. Present day Tennessee counties of Davidson, Greene, and Wayne were formed from Washington county prior to the Western Territor being ceded to the United States. In the early 1780s, NC had difficulty maintaining law and order in the Western Territory and the citizens there found it almost impossible to travel in a timely manner to the center of government in North Carolina. As with the establishment of most counties, access to their government was the prime reason citizens gave for establishing new counties. In 1784 the state of NC ceded the Western Territory to the United States. The federal government did not accept the territory at that time. The failure of the federal government to accept the ceded Western Territory caused a group of citizens lead by John Sevier to attempt to declare their control of the area and establish the independent state of Franklin. The state of Franklin existed for a period of about 4 years during the middle and late 1780s. This occured during that period after NC ceded the Western Territory to the federal government in 1784 and the federal government refused to accepted responsibility for the security, etc., of the territory. NC reclaimed the area from John Sevier who had lead the action to form the state of Franklin and again ceded the area to the federal government in 1789. This time the federal government accepted the territory in 1790 and renamed it the Southwest Territories. The State of Tennessee was formed in 1796. In Eldon Wade's case, the records that he seeks are probably either in the North Carolina Archives or in the county records in Washington county, Tennessee. A publication I have from the State Archives in Raleigh shows Washington County, NC was created from Terrell County in 1779. At that time prior to 1780, there were 3 counites that extended to what is now TN which were Surry, Rowan, and Tryon. In 1780, the most western counties were Wilkes, Burke, and Rutherford. The map (publication) I have comes from the book "The Formulation of the North Carolina COunties 1663-1943" by David L. Corbitt. Was sent to me by Linda Cooper who's on this list. In the very early days around 1740, the counties of Bertie, Craven, and Bladen extended westerward. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert G. HI... I have been researching Thomas W. Overstreet (Apr 4, 1881, GA - 8 JUl 1952, Bradford Co, FL) who married Mollie T. Hodges (the daughter of Elihu Hodges). Mollie was born 10 Apr 1888 FL - 17 Mar 1930. I was wondering if anyone has any information on Thomas...his parents...for one. Also I also discovered Thomas and Mollie in the census....they had children...in some areas I have looked, there has been no info on children..i was able to locate them in the census, 1920 census for Duval Co, FL and then I only found Thomas in the 1930 census in Richmond Co, NC. He was living with some of his children. Thomas was a widow in 1930. In some places I have looked, it said she died in 1932, but if the census is correct, then she died in 1930. These are the children I found in the census....Morris, Thomas Jr, Lois, Billie, Kenneth and Horace Overstreet. If anyone has more information on this family, I would appreciate any help in my family research. Stephanie Grohol
Thank You, Roger for the info. My husband's ancesters were the early German Settlers to Pa.
Eldon: In 1779, Washington county, North Carolina, consisted of that area that is now northeastern Tennessee. Hi Folks, I am new to your list but hope we can help each other. Maybe you can tell me which county my ancestor lived in. My ancestor, Edward WADE, Sr obtained land in what is now Sullivan Co TN. Edward got this land from a John BAILEY/BALEY and was issued warrants that was signed by the NC surveyor general. The surveyor general's statement opens with "State of North Carolina, Washington County, September 24, 1779". There is a statement from John BAILEY/BALEY dated October 3, 1782 wherein he assigns all rights he has to the land to Edward WADE. I understand that Washington Co was formed from Tyrrell Co in 1799. Here is the question: Based on the dates of the above documents (1779 and 1782) and since Washington Co was officially formed in 1799, were Edward WADE and John BAILEY/BALEY living in Washington Co NC or Tyrrell Co NC in 1799 and 1782? Thank you, Eldon
On a hunch, I'm seeing if anyone has any information on a Saluda PATTERSON who is shown living in Pittsylvania County, VA with children shown below (all born in VA): Patterson, Saluda 42 F (b. abt 1808) Patterson, Mary 16 F (b. abt 1834) Patterson, Jane 13 F (b. abt 1837) Patterson, William 7 M (b. abt 1843) The data was taken from the Pittsylvania County USGenWeb site at: ftp://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/va/pittsylvania/1850/pg0196a.txt My great-great-greatgrandfather William C. PATTERSON (1810-1891) was supposedly from VA and had a child named Saluda, so am wondering if he might have named the child after a sister. If anyone has any information on this Saluda PATTERSON and her parents or siblings, would sure appreciate a reply. Our William C. PATTERSON has been a brick wall not only for me, but others researching our past as well. BTW, William's occupation was as a "Hammer Man" while in NC since he worked in iron in Surry County, NC. Was also found in Hawkins County, TN in the 1840 census. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC

Am interested in hearing from those who might have information on this William Henry STEWART JR and his wife Amelia Elizabeth UPCHURCH. They are found in the 1880 Wake County, NC census with 7 of their children living with them. Another child was James Archibald STEWART (1859-1897) who married Laura SMITH (1852-1915) and they eventually lived and died in Pilot Mountain, Surry County, NC and are buried in the town cemetery. Have no other information on Laura SMITH or William's wife Amelia UPCHURCH. William's father (William SR) was to have been born in England and married Rebecca TRULOVE (unknown about her as well). Hi, folks, I am seeking information about William Harrison of Wake Co., who married Rhoda Jones (1815, Wake Co.) I need the names of the parents of William Harrison and Rhoda Jones. This William Harrison and family removed to Grayson Co., VA ca 1830. William may have had a brother John who went to Grayson, as well. I have a copy of William's will (1844, Grayson Co.) that I am happy to share. It names all of his children. Thank you. Sandra Lassen slassen@infoave.net

Hi, I know that currently that Petitions for Partition of heir property are in the local Courthouses, but what about from the mid to early 1800's, i.e. 1800-1850. I have seen reference to these early Petitions in the Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, but where would the original Petitions be in the county, or archives, also where and how would they be filed for this time period??? Thanks in advance.Sam West _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web!
