    3. hi all - can someone give me some information on (various) web sites for new hanover county? there seem to be plenty of sites for most of the other n.c. counties, but new hanover seems harder than most to get records via the internet. sure would appreciate the help. thanks in advance. julie thames howell, jax, fla researching surnames: THAMES and DUDLEY Elizabeth Harris wrote: > New or revised files uploaded to the archives this week. 1. [NCROOTS] SMITH
    2. Debbie Roth
    3. Hello Everyone, I am looking for any kind of lead to find the parents of my GGG Grandfather EDWARD SMITH. He was born in 1814 in NC. I do not know the county unfortunately. He was highly educated.... apparently from a well to do family. He left home at age 23 and traveled to Platte Co MO in 1837. I do not know if his parents traveled with him, or he traveled alone, or with others. He claimed his land and married a Lucinda MCCLAIN in 1842. He opened a school on his land (3 and1/2 miles of New Market). He taught school for many years. He was a Justice of the Peace. He accidentally drowned in the MO River in 1854 (other accounts say he was murdered in "Border Warfare"). His children were, Eliza, Edward Crawford, Martha and Levi D. Does anyone have a well to do SMITH family in NC around 1810 to 1815, that had a son named Edward who left to go to MO??? Please contact me if you have any leads. Thank you, Debbie Roth emkr@temecula.com Genealogy Researching Surnames: FRALEY, HENSON, DAVIS, SMITH, NEWBY, POTTS, GRAVES, PARROTT, HOLLIMAN

    1. [NCROOTS] Need help with...
    2. Debra Crowell
    3. Hello all, I am forwarding this to the list because, this area of Tennessee (in theese earlier years) was indeed part of NC. This area is in east Tennessee. Can someone please check early NC. census for him please? I am needing for someone to please tell me about this man. Hartsell/Hartwell Hurt was listed as a 1st settler to the Morgan,Co.TN.area, he is there just prior to 1815, he is listed in the early Morgan,Co.Book. Hartsell/Hartwell Hurt is not on any Morgan,Co.Census. What I need to know is who is he? What line of Hurt's did he descend from? Any and all help is greatly needed. Thanks in advance!!! Debra

    2. In a message dated 11/27/99 8:50:51 AM US Mountain Standard Time, NCROOTS-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << Does anyone know (1) if The Custom House is still in business, and/or are the maps still in print? and (2) were they done for more counties than the three--Stokes, Randolph and Montgomery--that I've come up with? Grateful for any reply. Thanks. >> I just called the book store in Tucson and asked about this book, it is where I purchased recently 'The Printed Source'. He has had queries about the book and similar books he told me what he has told others. These counties publish a limited edition of books like this and that is it. Need to get with the county involved and see if they have any copies left and he said usually not that these limited editions are sold out fairly fast. Sorry for the bad news. BJ in AZ I am going to do this as I just got varification that my fathers surname in listed in Spartenburgh, SC in Will book A just going thru a new book purchased named 'The Printed Source' found a page printed out of this book and my fathers surname was listed there. I know how to go from me back but when the trail stops you pick up straws where you find them and hope that they will connect in the middle with you. This book lists publishers but with so many over the states they can not list all the smallers ones just point us into a direction to use. BJ in AZ

    1. [NCROOTS] Custom House Historical Maps
    2. Sometime in the 1970s a series of county "Historical Documentation" maps of North Carolina were published by a firm called The Custom House, of Jamestown, NC. A Fred Hughes was involved in some of the maps. They were large format, with geographical landmarks and, most importantly, names and locations of individual property owners. Does anyone know (1) if The Custom House is still in business, and/or are the maps still in print? and (2) were they done for more counties than the three--Stokes, Randolph and Montgomery--that I've come up with? Grateful for any reply. Thanks. John Ottinger

    3. I have just uploaded a listing of the Civil War Soldiers buried in and around Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania, VA. I obtained the list from the Parks Service there and typed the list in a table sorted by states. I hope to put up a alphabetical sorting soon but this will suffice for the time being. The page has no bells or whistles on it yet but the information is there for your use. My gggrandfather John Tally was killed there and I have been trying to find where he is buried, but it is not here unfortunely. If anyone has any information on this man would appreciate an email. 1. Re: [NCROOTS] Fwd: a creek story as told by my greatgrandmother
    2. Hello Granny, You are correct about that. I am embarassed that that happened and always have been, even though it has gone on for centuries in other countries as well. That still does not make it right. I have always celebrated Thanksgiving for the wonderful treasues I have in my life and that was how I was raised that Thanksgiving was a day of giving thanks. Giving thanks to God for our many blessings in spite of the wars. The white were oppressed people before they came to America, too. I have just this year found out that I have a Native American link and maybe one more. I think it is wonderful. I understand myself more. I am an extremely *earthy* person in a world of *unearthy* people.......now I know where that part of me came. However, again, many of my ancestors were part of founding and building the structure of America of which I am very proud also. I just do not like how some of it was handled. May you be thankful for your blessings such as the wonderful stories you have to pass on to your family and friends. I am sure that all of us had ancestors that faced many hardships we could never imagine. The Native Americans are by far the ones that I feel the most sorry for as in any county as it is today where people are fighting over land just as the have been for thousands of years as it says in the Bible. I will be thankful for my blessings today as I was last night when I prayed about them. Anonymous

She lived to be 102 years young and but her stories seemed so new. this is one that I seem to remember the most. For in this story it shows the trust of the natives and the curelty of the whites. But yet in telling the story, we must learn the reason of the hate and not do as they did, HATE. Many years ago the natives lived near the water and enjoyed the simple way of life. Farming, hunting, fishing, and watching the children play. They gathered together at night to listen to the story tellers. What a happy life they had. The white man wanted the land the natives had. They were asked to move off the land. How could they leave the land they so loved. A place where their grandfathers was buried. They said they would not leave. So the whites said they understood. So to show how they wished for peace they would have a big feast. The village was all excited about the evening feast ahead. There was singing and happy laughter among the people. As the day due closer to where they were to meet the whites for peace, they sang louder and was rejoying over it. For there would be peace and they would be able to keep the land by the water. As they got close to where the whites were, they see the see the large amount of food. They talked how nice the whites were to have such a feast. My grand mother can so remember the songs they sang. So happy was the people. Today they would call it thanksgiving. But as the night went on little by little the whites left. So much happiness in the village , they did not see them leave. the whites were all on the surrending hills. They had harge cannons. Each was filled with broken glass, nails, wood, and pieces of iron. Soon the laughter of the village rang with fear, as they shot the cannons in to the people. They ran grabbing the old and the chilkdren. Many laid dead and dying. soon the smoke filled the area where there once was laughter, now only crying filled the air. So this is my story of thankgiving so i never say happy thankgiving i only say happy turkey day love granny --part1_0.46404a2.256e9d3d_boundary--

Wulff (Was); Dot/Wayne Freeman Subject: Giving thanks I hope this touches your heart and fires your patriotism as it does mine. Tribute to the U.S. This comes from a Canadian newspaper. America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas 10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon-not once, but several times-and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those." Stand proud, Americans. -- Kay C. Stone Lakeland, Florida Fancies Orchids and Genealogy
