He was born in 1814 in NC. I do not know the county unfortunately. He was highly educated.... apparently from a well to do family. He left home at age 23 and traveled to Platte Co MO in 1837. I do not know if his parents traveled with him, or he traveled alone, or with others. He claimed his land and married a Lucinda MCCLAIN in 1842. He opened a school on his land (3 and1/2 miles of New Market). He taught school for many years. He was a Justice of the Peace. He accidentally drowned in the MO River in 1854 (other accounts say he was murdered in "Border Warfare"). His children were, Eliza, Edward Crawford, Martha and Levi D. Does anyone have a well to do SMITH family in NC around 1810 to 1815, that had a son named Edward who left to go to MO??? Please contact me if you have any leads. Thank you, Debbie Roth emkr@temecula.com Genealogy Researching Surnames: FRALEY, HENSON, DAVIS, SMITH, NEWBY, POTTS, GRAVES, PARROTT, HOLLIMAN ______________________________ Debbie, This doesn't exactly match up with the dates and people you are looking for, but there is a lot of similarities, so there may be an yet undefined relationship. For example, James Smith may have had a brother who had a son named Edward who went to Missour, or the "neighbor" that travelled to Missouri with Zadoch may have been a cousin named Edward. There is also a possibility that your Edward was related in some way to Zadoch, and that is the reason Zadoch first considered moving to Missouri. I just don't know. Hope this helps. If this provides a connection to your family, let me know and I'll send you what information I have. James Smith, born to Robert Smith (England) and Hannah, 6 Jan 1766, married Elizabeth Hutchins, b. 4 Dec. 1776 in Virginia. They were married in 1795 in Surry County, North Carolina. One of their sons, Zadoch Thomas Smith (born 27 July 1812 in Wilkes County, North Carolina) married Candace Snow, one of their children was Edward Moore Smith. Zadoch Thomas and his wife Candace were both born, raised and married in North Carolina. In 1859, Thomas and a neighbor went to Missouri by horseback and were so impressed with the country around West Plains that they went back to North Carolina and sold their farms, and moved to Missouri. Thomas died in 2 August 1879 in West Plains, Missouri. Thomas served as a justice of the peace for many years. His son, Edward, was born 22 April 1852 in Surry, North Carolina married Mary Jane Wilson and had 18 children. Edward moved to Arcadia, Kansas. Edward had a brother named Levi Smith. Levi was born 12 January 1838 in Surry County, North Carolina, and moved with his family, about 1860, to Howell County, Missouri. Levi was married first to Celia Marsh who had 6 children. His second wife, Elizabeth Morrison, had four children. Levi died 25 October 1925 in West Plains, Missouri. 1. [NCROOTS] finding county information in NC
    2. Hi Ruth, I apologize for not posting the URL to the list. Betheny > there seem to be plenty of sites for most of the other n.c. counties, but >new hanover seems > harder than most to get records via the internet. sure would appreciate the >help. thanks in > advance. >> > >The same holds true, it seems, for Jackson Co. Any sites woud be greatly >appreciated! Thank you. All 100 North Carolina counties, plus some former counties and the Cherokee Indian Reservation, have home pages in the NCGenWeb system. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/ and you'll find a table listing all of them. Each of the individual county pages is associated with a query board, and most have individual e-mail lists. For North Carolina, most of the query boards associated with the NCGenWeb project are the ones on the GenConnect system, but some counties maintain separate boards, so it's worth checking the individual county pages. You may also want to look at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/list.html which is a page of links to various other NC resources, including other NCGenWeb project pages, the NCGenWeb Archives project, the NC state archives, newspapers, maps, and more. Besides NCGenWeb, there are several other projects on the web that provide information on individual NC counties. I'll leave it to the coordinators of those projects to provide their own announcements. Elizabeth Harris state coordinator, NCGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/

    3. SAR is "Sons of the Revolution", meaning this gentleman belonged to the SAR. The number is his membership number, and if you are a direct decendant of him, all you need to join SAR, for males, or DAR "Daughters of the American Revolution" is the certification of your direct line to him, to join either. There is also a CAR, which is for both boys and girls, under adulthood, in age (18, I think). Phyllis Barr Chezem Crothers. NSDAR member (National Society DAR) >What does SAR on a tombstone mean? 3. I have been doing a bit of research on the ancestors of James Pinckney HENDERSON, attorney general and secretary of state for The Republic of Texas, and subsequently first Governor of Texas and US Senator. He was born at Lincolnton, NC. A substantial Henderson data base exists, including NC, with the Clan Henderson Society genealogist. Bill, in Texas "I feel more like I do now than I did when I came in", is version heard here. If you an Anthony or Anthony descendent and have photographs you would like to see preserved on a CD-Rom for future generations please contact me. My Anthony's are from the Lincoln/Gaston County areas of NC. But, I know they have spread all over the world. I have about 100 photos at present. When the Dellinger CD is completed it will contain over 500 photo's from all over the world. I would implore everyone to undertake a similar project for your family. 1. [NCROOTS] New Hanover records
    2. Julie if you don't find what you need online I would suggest that you write a letter to the Old New Hanover Genealogical Society. They have volunteers that go in one day a week and research for people. You need to write a letter asking about only one ancestor at a time. Be very specific regarding all the dates that you have about that person and the kind of information that you are looking for. They won't charge you much more than postage and copying fees, but a donation is always nice. Their address is: Old New Hanover Genealogical Society, PO Box 2536, Wilmington, NC 28402. They are the nicest people there. Be kind to them for all the genealogists who will follow you! Brenda

    1. [NCROOTS] John Jesse OVERTON, born 1790
    2. I am searching for the parents of John Jesse Overton, born in either North Carolina, OR Louisa County, VA about 1790. He married Sophia Henry from Georgia. He may have also lived in Kentucky, and spent his final years in Baldwin County, AL. John Jesse and Sophia had six children: Wesley George, Thomas, Orwell Matilda (OR Matilda Arwell), Olive, Rose, and Margaret. Family tradition implies that John Jesse knew Andrew Jackson and came to Alabama with him, perhaps during the Indian wars. Any information about the parents or siblings of John Jesse Overton will be appreciated. I am a descendant of his daughter, Orwell, who married William J. Davis.
