    1. [NCROOTS] Gallant Ayers
    2. Michelle Donnelly
    3. Good Morning List! I am a new subscriber, and I am hoping to find some information on Gallant (aka Garland, Garlint) Ayers/Ayres. Gallant is believed to have been born around 1775 in or around Pittsylvania County VA. He is listed in Surry county NC and in Buncombe County NC. His will was Filed in Buncombe County in 1831, and he died in Yancey county NC. He was a land owner in Franklin county Ga as well. Although I have much info on his descendants, I have been unable to locate parents or siblings. Old family rumor is that his mother was Cherokee, and that is why we can't find information. This is unsubstantiated rumor. Can anyone out there help? Any information would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!! Thanks in advance for anything sent my way! 3. Actually, the land of the Lost Colony is Roanoke Island, North Carolina, with the two towns of Manteo and Wanchese on it, named after the helpful Indians who gave the Colony much-needed advice in their first months here. The Isle of Wight, if I am not mistaken, is in Virginia? And, you are right, there is a HUGE amount of information about the Lost Colony on the Internet. It is one of time's greatest unsolved mysteries. If you ever have the opportunity to visit the Outer Banks of North Carolina, make sure to go to Roanoke Island. There is the Fort Raleigh Historic site with the ORIGINAL fort the Colony built there restored some, a replica of the Elizabeth II with historic actors aboard to show how the colonists travelled here, along with the oldest running outdoor drama in the US, "The Lost Colony," which plays nightly from June through August. darlene cantey wrote: > I will always remember the white deer story. 2. BUTE COUNTY Bute County was formed in 1764 from Granville. The act was to become effective June 10, 1764. It was named in honor of John Stewart, Earl of Bute, one of the principal secretaries of state, and first Lord of the treasury under George 111, over whom he exerted a dominant influence. The earl of Bute became very unpopular with the Americans, and in 1779 the General Assembly abolished Bute by dividing its territory into the counties of Warren and Franklin which were named for the Revolutionary patriots, Joseph Warren and Benjamin Franklin. It was in the northeastern section of the colony. The act ordered the court to be held on Jethro Sumners land at a place called Buffalo Race Path. ..........The said county of Granville shall be divided into Two Distinct Counties; and that all that Part of the said County which is now called or known by the Name of the Parish of Granville, from and after the said Tenth Day of June, shall be a Distinct County, and remain to be called Granville County;and that all that Part of the said County called and known by the Name fo St. John's Parish, shall, after the said Tenth Day of June, be another Distinct County, called by the name of Bute County. Part of Northampton was annexed to Bute in 1766. ..........to run and Mark (or cause the same to be done) a line from Roanoke River Bank, opposite the mouth of Stone House Creek, a due North Course to the dividing Line between this Province and the Colony of Viriginia; and all that part bounded to the Eastward, by the Line above directed to be marked, and to the Northward by the Virginia Line, to where it crosses Roanoke River, shall be, and is herby annexed to, and made part of the County of Bute; and the inhabitants therefore shall be subject and liable to the same Rules, Orders, Taxes, and Privileges, as any other of the Inhabitants of the said County of Bute. Franklin was formed in 1779 from Bute. ..........a direct line from the Granville line to Halifax or Nash county line as the case may be, leaving in each part or division an equal quantity of Acres as near as can be ascertained...... ..........to measure the lines of said County on every side and to run the dividing line so as to make each respective division as convenient to the respective persons residing therein as possible, which said lines when run by the commissioners, or a majority of them, shall be entered on the record of each County, and all that part of division which lies North of said line & adjacent to Virginia shall be a distinct County by the name of Warren, and all that part or division that lies South of said line shall be a distinct county by the name of Franklin... Warren was formed in 1779 from Bute. ..........a direct line from the Granville line to Halifax or Nash County line as the case may be , leaving in each part or division and equal quantity of Acres as near as can be ascertained..... ..........to measure the lines of said County on every side and to run the dividing line so as to make each respective division as convenient to the respective persons residing therein as possible, which said lines when run by the commissioners, or a majority of them, shall be entered on the record of each County, and all that part or division which lies North of said line & adjacent to Virginia shall be a distinct County by the name of Warren, and all that part or division that lies South of said line shall be a distinct County by the name of Franklin.... 3. Joy, Unless my memory fails me, the 2nd ship to arrive here was bringing supplies for the Colony. And Governor White left no one here due to the devastation of the fort and the disappearance of the Colony. There are hypotheses of what happened to the Lost Colony; some say they were brutally slaughtered by the Indians, others say they moved south to Hatterask (now Hatteras Island) and eventually merged with the Indians, with their lineage now traced to the Lumbees of North Carolina. Of course, there is the legend of the White Doe; Virginia Dare fell in love with an Indian prince but the shaman of the tribe wanted her. When she spurned him, he turned her into a white deer and she roams Roanoke Island to this day. You could probably contact the Fort Raleigh Historic Site (I think they are on the web as well); they would have a full list of colonists. 1. [NCROOTS] Hunter Family
    2. Linda Allen
    3. Hello, I'm new to this list and hope somone can help me crack my ' brick wall '. I'm searching for the parents of BURRELL HUNTER b. 2 Jul 1797 NC d. 1860/70 Denton Co TX. His marriage to BETSY BRIGANCE on 20 Nov 1819 in Sumner Co.TN is documented by the Brigance family. Some sources suggest Burrell's line goes back from Reuben, to Theophilus, to Isaac, to William but I've found no proof of this . Burrell had a son, George Theophilus and a grandson, Robert Theophilus which leads me to believe he must fit somewhere in the ' Theophilus Hunter ' line. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions anyone has to offer. Thanks, Linda
