----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Jacques <mjacques@mcn.net> To: <Repphome@aol.com> Cc: Mary Jacques <mjacques@mcn.net> Sent: Wednesday, December 08, 1999 1:56 PM Subject: NC-PHILLIPS,CHRISCO (1902-1965), HAYWOOD, RUSSELL,COLE Dear Pam, Welcome to NCROOTS. Unless Amanda RUSSELL happens to be in someone in my "brick wall" RUSSELL line, I don't have any specific information on any of your family. Usually I post only one or two connecting surnames in an email's subject line. I'm posting more here, hoping someone will connect with some of your people and look at your Original Message. ----- Original Message ----- > From: <Repphome@aol.com> > To: <NCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, December 08, 1999 11:36 AM > Subject: Re: [NCROOTS] I'M NEW TO LIST AND DESPERATELY NEED HELP. ------------------------------ Pam, like you, I didn't realize how much I knew to link me to my ancestors. You have lots of information to get started on. Don't despair!! You have people, live and kicking, on this list who will help you get past your first two generations. You gave more than enough facts in your email for people to relate to. You may even meet some cousins you never knew you had. I can tell you some things which were helpful to me in my research. One place to start is to download free genealogical forms from the internet. I don't have any of those internet sites on my current computer. I'm sure someone on this list can direct you to them. Once you can organize your present information into family trees you'll see how much information and how many leads are in your information. To focus on your grandfather, you said Loyd CHRISCO (b. 12 April 1902) died March, 1965 and is buried in Greensboro, NC. His death is recent enough so you have great possibilities of finding written documentation. You might locate the cemetery in which he is buried, check their cemetery records, and find out what funeral home was in charge of the burial. Since you don't live close by, search the internet for cemeteries in Greensboro, NC and make some phone calls. The funeral home may even let you copy his records and have a copy of his death certificate. Since you know the month and year in which he died, order a death certificate from the state of NC--if he died in NC. A death certificate may confirm his address, his wife's name, his parents names, and his birth info. I don't know about NC death certificates, maybe someone can help you with NC specifics. In some states, a direct relative can request the listing of cause of death on a death certificate. Also, cause of death becomes public record after a given number of years in some states. I found and was able to copy lots of information from the records of a Florida funeral home. I discovered my South Carolina grandfather's full name on two death certificates (his and my father's certificates). Since my family tended to include ancestors' surnames in the given names of their children, his middle name gave me a possible lead on an ancestor of my grandfather. I have since verified my intuitive hunch: my grandfather's middle name was indeed the maiden name of his grandmother. This tie-in was the missing link which zipped me back to a couple whose lineage I was researching as probable first ancestors in America, naturalized in 1696. When I got serious about my research, I had a pittance of written documentation; an abundance of stories about my family; and, an elderly mother who was 3,000 miles away and now confused on details. Since then I have gone far back in my family lines, thanks to meeting unknown cousins on lists like this one; following leads; digging deep into public documents (death certificates, cemetery records, marriage records, wills, deeds, birth certificates, military records, published family genealogies, etc) and private ones (family Bibles and prayer books, funeral memorial books, baby books, cards and letters, scraps of paper, old personal telephone and address books, etc.); and, using family lines posted on internet sites as resources and not as the final word. Above all, start with what you know and document, document, document what you discover and specifically where you found each detail. You may run into conflicting or differing information; knowing your sources will help you sort through differences in details. Hope some of this email encourages you not to give up. Dig in; enjoy; use your intuitive hunches; document your treasures. Your ancestors want you to find them. You've done an incredible amount of detailed genealogical work already. Welcome to this place of help and hope. Hi, Am new to the list and researching the name of Edwards. Particularly a John Wesley Edwards married to a Martha. Both were born approx. 1775. They had two known sons in Greene Co NC between 1810 and 1820 named Wesley and Henry. They moved to VA before 1830 and had a son named William there. Is there any place I can get a marriage record for John and Martha or birth records for Wesley and Henry. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Ancyn

Hello, I'm new and I need help. Well, fellow listers, I really don't know where to begin. First let me say that I am very happy to belong to the lists, I'm new to genealogy and I know that my lack of experience is one of my biggest pitfalls. I have joined the Guilford, Richmond and Moore county lists also, and will be happy with any help from anyone. One of my biggest problems is that I don't have anyone living to help be get past the first two generations. So here goes.... My name is Pamela Sue Repp, I was a PHILLIPS before I married. My daddy's people (PHILLIPS) are mostly from the Virginia/West Virginia area. My daddy was DeNeal Eugene Phillips, career military (US Army) of Elkins, WVA. He met my mother, Mary Louise CRISCO, in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1948 when she 19 years old and working at Prego-Myers (I think that is right). I know that my mother was born at home in the Ellerbe, North Carolina (Richmond County) area on July 18, 1929. She is the only child of Loyd Chrisco and Bertha Haywood Chrisco. Now, my grandfather, Loyd Chrisco died in March, 1965 and is buried in Greensboro. I'm not sure where he was born, but I've been told Moore County, NC. His birthday was April 12, 1902. I know that he had a brother John and a brother Daniel (there were others, but I don't know their names), and he had a sister Mary and a sister Sallie (there were other sisters, too). I think there were about 12 children, and the problem that I'm having is the spelling of the name. My grandfather spelled it CHRISCO, his brother John and Daniel spelled it CHRISCOE and my mother dropped the 'h' out and for the past 60 years has spelled it CRISCO. The only thing that I know about his parents is that his father was called 'Enny' Chrisco, and that his name was either 'Enos' 'Ennis' or 'Enoch' and that he was married to Amanda Russell. I know NO DATES, NO BIRTHPLACES, NO DEATH PLACES. I know that John and Daniel Chriscoe lived in the Greensboro area and most probably still have family there. My grandmother Bertha Haywood Crisco is still living (she will be 90 years old in January), but she doesn't know any further generations. She and my grandfather were married in Bennettsville, SC in 1928 and they lived in the country around Ellerbe before moving to Greensboro. My grandmother was born at home in 1910. She was the oldest girl and the fourth child of Chesley Haywood and Margaret "Maggie" Poplin Haywood. She does not know the name of her grandparents on her mothers side (POPLIN). The only grand- parents she ever knew were on her fathers side (HAYWOOD). Her grandfather was Benjamin Haywood and he was married to Margaret Cole. I know that my grandmother's youngest sibling, EJ (Edward James) called 'Eddie' Haywood was killed in action--WWII on a a ship that was bombed by a Japanese kamakazi pilot in 1945. I can't find any record of his death, not even in Social Security records. My mother can't remember the name of the ship he was on, but thinks that it started with a 'W'....I've tried looking up the battleships on the internet, and can't find a ship that starts with a 'W' that was bombed and sunk in 1945. I know that my grandmother had the following siblings: MARVIN HAYWOOD McCOY 'Coy' HAYWOOD FLOYD HAYWOOD EDWARD JAMES 'EJ or EDDIE' HAYWOOD all of the above are deceased..... the girls are: BERTHA HAYWOOD CRISCO (my grandmother) LULA HAYWOOD DUNN (wife of Elsie Dunn of Ellerbe) MAUDE HAYWOOD BRIDGES (Charlotte, NC) MARGARET LEE HAYWOOD KINNEY (Akron, Ohio) As far as I can tell, all the Haywood children were born in Richmond County. Does any of this info sound familiar to anyone out there. Can anyone help me??? Many thanks, Pam Repp Nashville, TN >>

I have just uploaded a modification to the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania, VA Civil War Cemetery listing that lists the buried soldiers there in both Alphabetical order and by States. Take a look if you think there might be some information there for you. For NC researchers who haven't visited Christine's Genealogy Website, here's what's going on there. http://ccharity.com ======North Carolina info========= New Book - "A Separate Canaan: The Making of an Afro-Moravian World in North Carolina, 1763-1840", by Jon Sensbach. In this carefully researched book, Jon Sensbach explores a subject that is at once unusual and timely. It is unusual in that it concerns a population that has been heretofore overlooked or ignored in African American religion--the black Moravians. It is timely because it engages some of the most fashionable themes in Southern history, such as race, culture, and religion, using a fresh and nuanced approach. > Report of outrages committed by the Ku Klux Klan in North Carolina - "The family of Daniel Blue, colored, murdered in Moore County. Thanks to Alice Tatum and her listings of 1790 Census names in Rutherford Co!! Looking at one of her lists for that county & the Morgan Dist. I find a Charles Rollin listed as over 16 y.o., with one female in the household and two males under 16 y.o. Does anyone have any information on this person? I'm trying to trace the parents of a John Rollin(s) born somewhere in N.C and married around 1834 in Pike Co., Alabama, to a ?? Floyd, b. in Columbus Co.,daughter of Evan & Elizabeth Floyd. I'm wondering if this Charles could be John's father. The "Charles" name repeats itself in the Rollin(s)/Roling line in Alabama. Thank you in advance for any hints or ideas. Donna Hafner Montgomery, Alabama
I will do look ups in Burke County Will book 1777-1910. NO ALL OF ONE SURNAME, please limit your requests to only two look ups. Thank you Cindy in NC
