Lisa, I have no Campbell connection, but noticing your other surnames interested me. I am from a Smith line that ended up in Pike Co (mostly), AL, but reportedly came from SC, (Zacharia Smith b. ca. 1800) and I don't doubt that NC was their home before that. I'm also looking at a ggg grandmother (Bedie Ann Green b. ca. 1835) reportedly from NC who married a William Brown (b. ca 1830) from GA. I'm wondering who are your Smiths, and Greens? Thanks for any insight, Donna Hafner Montgomery, Alabama NCROOTS-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Subject: > > NCROOTS-D Digest Volume 99 : Issue 622 > > Today's Topics: > #1 [NCROOTS] Hunting 1750 thru 1785 J ["Lisa Grimes" <kcks@goldendale.net] > #2 [NCROOTS] 1790 NC Rutherford Cty, [Frendlysky@aol.com] > #3 [NCROOTS] Reddick BRYAN [DEWQUINN@aol.com] > #4 [NCROOTS] Fwd: Need Help Please/ L [Bruisedbrn@aol.com] > #5 [NCROOTS] Re: Reddick BRYAN [RLugowski@aol.com] > > Administrivia: > To unsubscribe from NCROOTS-D, send a message to > > NCROOTS-D-request@rootsweb.com > > that contains in the body of the message the command > > unsubscribe > > and no other text. Looking for information on the family of Dempsey Woods who evidently spend his entire life in Orange County NC. With the exception of 1810, Dempsey is enumerated on every Orange County NC Census between 1800 and 1850. He was born in 1774 and is recorded as being twice married: 1. To Nancy Glenn in Orange County NC on 15 Aug 1800. 2. To Mary Chisenhall (b 1785) in Orange County NC on 11 Sep 1827. Dempsey is of further record as a witness to the following will: [E-291] Joseph Wood(s) Will dated 11 Nov 1827. Proved 1833. Joseph's wife was a Mary [Leathers] and he mentions a daughter Elizabeth Chisenhall, a son James Woods, and other children: Solomon, Henry, Joseph, Sukey (Susannah) Glenn, Nancy King, and Mary Chisenhall. The will is witnessed by Dempsey and a Frederick Moize. As census entries cease to exist after 1850, I presume Dempsey died in Orange County between 1850 and sometime prior to the 1860 enumeration. Thanks for any comments. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico
The index of wills for Cumberland County, North Carolina, as outlined on GenWeb, shows an 1816 will for James TORREY. Is anyone aware of a published abstract of Cumberland County wills that might include this will? If not I would appreciate hearing from someone who could help me obtain a copy of this will. Help - slammed into a big brick wall I'm Looking for the family of Dick Anderson. Found only in the 1870 census. I have not been able to find his family anywhere else. This Anderson family is the only African American family with the surname Anderson listed in Whitesville, NC. Dick Anderson Age 25 in 1870 A young lady named Mamie Anderson born abt. 1890 died between 1914-15 married Arthur "Cuff" Roberts from Reeves Township, Marion County, South Carolina. She was from Whitesville, NC. I don't know her parents or siblings names. The 1910 census shows Mamie Anderson-Roberts has a niece living her named Georgia Wallace age 10. One of Mamie's sisters child. Mamie and Arthur Roberts had 4 daughters together before she died. Their names might hold clues to her family in North Carolina Thelma, Alizina, Victorine & Scott Anna. Thanking you in advance on any help with this family Sandra A Bigham
I have posted off and on for over 2 years now, but it's not stopping me from posting again. Some day, someone will have the info I need. I am searching for a MORTON family that had a James in it (born between 1780-1790) that ended up at some point living in Anderson County, TN. He is listed in that county's census for that year. Trying desperately to find the proof that he might be my gg-grandfather, David MORTONs, parents. I have no idea who his parents were, but living nearby was a Tilda MORTON (older than this James) and she could also be the mother of our David. Thanks so much for checking your records. Nina
I would like to unsubscribe from the list. I have received a lot of information and I want to thank each of you for your generous replies. I believe I have all the info I can get and must concentrate on other areas now. Thanks to all again, Peace, Happiness, Health & Love for the holidays any the coming years! Betty Wells Maryland

Hello all, I'm usually just a lurker, learning my way around researching in NC, but I thought that I would take a moment to see if I can find others that are also researching. Revolution with WATKINS > Known to have lived in Oglethorpe Co., GA sometime after 1785. > Known to have lived in Vermillion Parish, LA after 1810. > Known son; Levi CAMPBELL, b. circa 1760-63, probably in NC d. 22 Jan 1817, Vermillion Parish, LA > Other POSSIBLE children; Charles Jr., Robert, William, Keziah, and Laurany I'm trying to find out if they're connected to the above pair. This group of CAMPBELL's later migrated to the part of Wilkes County that became Oglethorpe Co., GA. This area was opened up for white habitation after 1783 [treaty signed with the Indians] and many made the trek to the area between 1783-1785. Most arrived after 1785. The 1796 Tax List for Oglethorpe Co., GA lists; Charles CAMPBELL Charles CAMPBELL Jr. [as listed on Tax List] Robert CAMPBELL [m. unknown] Len [Levi] CAMPBELL [m. Sarah WATKINS] William CAMMELL [Campbell] [possibly may be the one that m. Elizabeth CAMPBELL,] [dtr of 'old' William CAMPBELL, and moved to TN ....] Laurany [Campbell] WATKINS, widow of Benjamin WATKINS Moses WATKINS [m. Keziah CAMPELL] There's a recorded marriage for, Charles CAMPBELL m. Millie BAILEY in 1800, also in Oglethorpe Co., GA. I know Charles CAMPBELL Sr was widowed, and re-married, but I don't know if he re-married in GA, or if after 1810 in LA. Nor do I know which Charles CAMPBELL Sr, or Charles CAMPBELL Jr., that this recorded marriage involved. Moses, Benjamin, and Sarah WATKINS were all siblings and the children of; Reese [Reace, Reech, Rice, Rise, Rhys] WATKINS, b. Chester Co., PA Sarah BARBER, b. Augusta Co., VA. ....residents of Wake Co., NC during the Am. Revolution ....previously in Augusta Co. VA, and later Oglethorpe Co., GA Reese WATKINS was the son of Robert WATKINS m. Margaret [______] ...grandson of Cadawalader WATKINS ...Cadawalader, and son Robert, immigrated from Wales. Sarah BARBER was the dtr of Col. George BARBER, Irish immigrant to VA and Elizabeth [?? Moore ??]; Elizabeth later m. Col. PATTON The surname, [?? Moore ??], isn't confirmed with hard evidence, and I'm still looking for that, but I list it in the hopes that someone will have it, or know of it. At present it's just speculation. I am in contact with several WATKINS cousins descending from; Moses WATKINS m. Keziah CAMPBELL Benjamin WATKINS m. Laurany CAMPBELL >From what we've been finding, we're suspecting that all of these CAMPBELL's were siblings, and married into the WATKINS family en masse. Although my side has inherited "only son" status for Levi. This is the reason that I'm trying to locate anyone that just might know about this little group of CAMPBELL's. My Sarah WATKINS was born in Johnston Co., NC in about 1763. It is my belief that her husband, Levi CAMPBELL, didn't swoop her up off of the side of the road and just run off with her. My understanding of my Reese WATKINS is that Levi would have risked a few extra holes in his hide if he had but tried. < GRIN > Based on simple common sense Levi CAMPBELL, and/or parents-siblings, had to have at least known the WATKINS family either from their time in VA, and/or were neighbors with the WATKINS family in Wake Co., NC. It is known that both Benjamin WATKINS, and Moses WATKINS, married their brides in NC before making the trek to that part of Wilkes County that became Oglethorpe Co., GA. I am also of the opinion that Levi CAMPBELL m. Sarah WATKINS in Wake Co., NC too. Anyone out there with information to either solve this long standing puzzle, or can shine some light on where to look, I'll be most grateful. For other WATKINS-CAMPBELL cousins . . . I do have quite a bit of information on the CAMPBELL line descending from Levi. Thank you for your time and patience, Lisa Grimes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My other surnames; GREEN, probably in Burke Co., NC SMITH,HAGGARD,ROBERTS,KIMBRO[KIMBROUGH], HOLT, in Surrey Co., NC ROSSER, VINSON, WEST in Johnston Co., NC All believed to have migrated to NC from VA, and then later migrated to various counties in GA, some to TN, AL, and TX. _______________________________
Historically, the model for research facilities use in genealogy and family history [in the United States] centered first on the East Coast, with the subsequent gradual takeover in the field of Family History, beginning circa A. D. 1900, by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah). Presently, on the East Coast, the Library of Congress Online Catalog has a database of "approximately 12 million records representing books, serials, computer files, manuscripts, cartographic materials, music, sound recordings, and visual materials in the Library's collections." http://catalog.loc.gov/ This is further enhanced by major research depositories from New England - to the South, as well as some other locations in the Central section of the United States. This can be compared with the LDS FHC of Salt Lake City, Utah, having 2,000,000 + microfilms and approximately 280,000 bound volumes. REF: The World of Learning 1999, Forty-Ninth Edition, by Europa Publications Limited. http://www.familysearch.org/Browse/browse.asp On the West Coast, in the State of California, there is the Melvyl® Catalog Database. Its contents, as of December 6, 1999 are listed as: "approximately 10,013,139 Titles representing 15,226,500 holdings for materials in the University of California Library and the California State Library". http://www.melvyl.ucop.edu/ This represents a major PARADIGM SHIFT in the field of Genealogy and Family History Research, as this database alone represents more resources than those contained in the Online Library of Congress Catalog. Limited in-house access to Other Databases includes RLIN Bibliographic File (@RLG) http://www.rlg.org/rlin.html of approximately 88 million records, as well as WorldCat (@OCLC) and its 32 + million records. http://www.oclc.org/oclc/man/6928fsdb/worldcat.htm SOURCES and REFERENCES, at: http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/~vctinney/archives.htm#Sources combines these major holdings with other online databases of genealogical interest - worldwide. It has been estimated that in the State of California, alone, that by the 1990s, there were over 70 millions of books within the various library systems, statewide. The future of the California Library system is: "One library, 8,000 doors", as mentioned in an editorial in The Sacramento Bee, dated Sunday, May 4, 1997, page 4 of the Forum Section). The California Digital Library (CDL) presently "is responsible for the design, creation, and implementation of systems that support the shared collections of the University of California". Hi. Great letter. Held my attention all the way through. Maybe it wasn't a battleship. There were many other types of ships that were hit by kamakazi. Try researching the battle for Okinawa which was in April of 1945 and, if I remember correctly, was our first encounter with kamakazi. Joyce B. Nashville, TN
Ancyn, NC did not start keeping birth records until 1913. You can write the Archives to see if they have a copy of the marriage record. The address is NC State Archives, Archival Services Branch, Mail Service Center 4614, Raleigh, NC 27699-4614. There is an $8 search fee for non-residents. I checked Early NC Marriages to 1800 and did find a marriage for a John or Wesley Edwards to a Martha. This book stops at 1800 to look further for you i would need a county, as the rest of my marriage bond books are by county. I would like to thank everyone who took a "gander" at the Courthouse Men. I am determined to find out who they are and why they put on their Sunday "best" to pose for this photo. But when you go into the book, the dates of Tillman are different. Could Tillman have one child called Jonathan and one Tillman and then ... Any help? Ruth
