    1. [NCROOTS] Full Moon/ Winter Solstice
    2. ELWOOD MILLS
    3. I find this lunar occurance to be really interesting. This is something I will have to tell my children to look at and tell their children the significance of it. Especially, since it only occurs once in a hundered or so years. Really glad to get this input. And, it is something for me to put in my PAF for the children. Actually, this is a great boon for me. Thank you, Liz. Kath MILLSBORKA@worldnet.att.net

    3. Neal Caskey asked me to let the list know he has been booted off for his post titled "Curses, hexes, and other intimidations". Neal feels that he has been unfairly removed from the list and requests that all of you who feel the same write the temporary post, Barbara Farthing Bonham, at bbonham@awod.com. Let her know your feelings on this matter. Neal also wanted to let you know that the "curse" must have worked. Thanks. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. Thanks Neil. At least YOU realize that we all need to clean up documents by clipping out headers and footers before forwarding them on to others... especially the entire net. I'm sure you also realize it is not necessary to include the entire text over and over again when making comments to others. We need more like you on the net. Thanks again, George

    3. Duane, I checked Ratcliffs NC Taxpayers and found Truman Garrett in Currituck county in 1755. Currituck is a coastal county in NC just in case you are not familiar with NC counties. Perhaps this is your Truman's father. Duane Barton wrote: > I'm looking for any anything about one of my brick > wall ancestors, Truman Garrett, born in Dec. 1777 > somewhere in North Carolina. 3. What ever happened to the Christmas spirit, Liz? I would just like to remind you that it isn't nice to wish bad things happen to people and especially 3x's. I think it was nice of Neal to think of the list and to remind of us of this. Thanks Neal. I will be looking in the night sky on the 22nd. 2. Neal Caskey
    3. This year will see the first full moon occur on the winter solstice, Dec. 22, commonly called the "first day of winter". Since a full moon on the winter solstice will occur in conjunction with a lunar perigee (point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth), the moon will appear about 14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in it's elliptical orbit that is farthest from the Earth) since the Earth is also several million miles closer to the sun at this time of the year than in the summer, sunlight striking the moon is about 7% stronger making it brighter.? Also, this will be the closest perigee of the Moon of the year since the moon's orbit is constantly deforming. If the weather is clear and there is a snow cover where you live, it is believed that even car headlights will be superfluous. On December 21st 1866, the Lakota Sioux took advantage of this combination of occurrences and staged a devastating retaliatory ambush on soldiers in the Wyoming Territory. In laymen's terms, it will be a super bright full moon, much brighter than usual AND it hasn't happened this way for 133 years! Our ancestors 133 years ago saw this.? Our descendants 100 or so years from now will see this again. I hope someone else might find this interesting!? Remember this will happen December 22, 1999. Take a look at the sky that evening. 1. [NCROOTS] Thanks Neal
    2. Thank you for this information. As a History Nut I am amazed at how little my children and grandchildren have been taught in school about this country, s past history. So everything that I can find, such as this, I print it off and it goes in a section at the front of my Family Tree. When My grandchildren come they ask to see who I have discovered since they read it last. And before they do, they read anything new that I have inserted in the front about the WBTS, WW11, WW1, about our ancestor settlers and the history of the Indians, England, French etc. They go home with a little more knowledge than when they came. Thank you again. Pat

    2. Larry Noah
    3. If you have ancestors in St. Paul's Lutheran Church cemetery, you may be interested in the following information furnished by Lisa Wright, Wright@iogmail.iog.unc.edu. Lisa's aunt, Virginia Loy Fausel, compiled the cemetery listing that is on my website. They are concerned not only about their land but the proposed proximity of the highway to the cemetery. This is what Lisa said: ---------------------------quote------------- "The Dept. of Transportation wants to re-route highway 62 which now goes through the village of Alamance to go beside St. Paul Lutheran Church. This will cut across our family land where the old trading path is and run "right" beside the church cemetery. The village of Alamance Board of Aldermen will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the Village Meeting Hall. This is very important and we need all interested citizens to attend." ----------------end quote------------------ If anyone lives in the area and has connections to St. Paul's, please contact Lisa direct. This is one of the oldest churches in the area and, at present, has a well kept cemetery. Thank you. 2. Douglas/Ungaro
    3. Many people will be observing Black History Month 2000 in FEBRUARY 2000. Black or African-American History Month was started in WASHINGTON, DC, as NEGRO HISTORY WEEK by Dr. CARTER G. WOODSON. The African-American Studies Research Center at University of Virginia (Charlottesville) is named for Dr. Woodson. My Mother, Edna June Nichols Douglas (born, Leavenworth, KS), remembers Dr. Woodson visiting her (Black) public school in Washington, DC, when she was a girl. This was probably in the late 1930s or early '40s. How cool. Thanks to information shared by genealogy researcher, Damita Drayton Green, below is a link for the Association for the Study of African-American Life & History (ASALH) regarding Black History Month 2000.
