    2. John B. Lisle
    3. Angela, Sorry to off-topic, but this issue is causing concern on many lists and it is important to understand the facts. Elizabeth, this will be my first, last, and only post on this subject on this list. It would seem that many of you might be confused about this email virus/worm. When you receive (note that I did not say IF you receive one <grin>), you will find that an exe file is attached to it. If you open that file - and lots of people are doing just that - your PC will be infected by a fairly obnoxious worm virus. And by being infected, it goes on to infect others by reading your email inbox and sending it to them and forging the sender name so you do not know where it really came from. What is the genealogy aspect? The Rootsweb email community has (accidently) proven to be an extremely fertile breeding ground for this new worm. But: it is NOT coming from RootsWeb; it just often seems to be coming from them. If anyone would like to learn more about it: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/virus1.html Please get your Anti-virus software updated and scan your disks to clean any viruses. Then make sure that it is scanning your incoming mail for incoming viruses. For the next few weeks, you may have to do this every few days. Condolences, john. 2. Elizabeth Harris wrote: >>Here is a bit of info on early marriages of NC. Joyce mentioned the names HUNT, BEALES, UNTHANK, HIATT, MENDENHALL, THORNBRUGH and HOGGATT among others, in Rowan County in the 1760s. I'd just like to add that these are mostly Quaker names, and are likely to have been in the part of old Rowan County that eventually became Guilford County. Thank you Elizabeth for the info. on Quaker surnames in NC. I have seen the Mendelhall/Mendalhall many times in Quaker records. I have access to HINSHAW'S records that he transcribed on Quaker Genealogy and am willing to look-up queries as to ancestors that possibly were Quakers. William Wade HINSHAW, originally transcribed the records and passed away before he completed his transcriptions. Persons of the Quaker faith did not have to have their vital info. (births, marriages, deaths) recorded with the government/counties/localities until 1850, however kept their own meticulous records, which is what HINSHAW worked diligently to transcribe - such as the members of the church of Latter Day Saints also did. If I can help anyone out with Quaker surname research, please e-mail me personally. Thank you. Ruth in NC e-mail: RLugowski@aol.com Rootsweb Sponsor

    3. This is not an attachment it's a url it takes you to somplace with silly santa clause and other things you can e-mail out. My questions is this has nothing to do with genealogy and why is it so important for the person who sent it to send this to us. .............. this is not part of genealogy. 3. Please, folks. This is not the right list to discuss software, free or otherwise. I did pass along an important virus warning this morning, because a reader received a virus-generated message that appeared to be coming from NCROOTS. If you need virus protection or genealogy software, there are plenty of other places to learn about it. If you're in doubt about whether what you're about to post is appropriate, then drop me a note first. Thanks for your cooperation! The very fact you both are doing such a tremendous job in helping us folks out in cyberspace, and the way you make us all feel like experts on the subject; leads me to believe you are selfless, dedicated, wonderful women.....who care about others! It was probably a minunderstanding and was recived by misunderstanding on both sides. PLEASE LADIES! I know you are both hurt, and feel you have been dealt with unjustly and harshley. PLEASE BLAME THE SECRETARY (that's me!)! It ALWAYS worked for the Engineers. I worked for the aerospace program...and when ANYTHING....ANYTHING AT ALL went wrong; they blamed it on the Secreary. Here's a little family history about James Smith and his daughter, Elizabeth (named after her mother): James Smith remained on his land in Wilkes County and watch his children grow, marry and move away. He was a carpenter, a cabinet maker and farmer by trade. It is said that he brought his carpenter tools with him from England. He worked hard and lived the life of a true pioneer. On the 25th of August 1841, his wife, Elizabeth, died at the age of 65 and since he was 75 years old and had been rather sick recently, he sat down a few days later and wrote his will. At the time he wrote it, all of his children were either married or had moved away except for the youngest daughter, Elizabeth Hutchins Smith, who was at that time 23 years old and unmarried. Here is a copy of the will he wrote: "In the name of God, Amen. I, James Smith, of Wilkes County in the state of North Carolina being at the present time sound in mind although very weak in body do declare this to be my last will and testament. I hereby bequeath and devise to my beloved daughter Elizabeth Hutchins Smith all my household & kitchen furniture, also all the stock I possess of all kinds with my shop tools of all descriptions and my family utencils for her own separate use and maintenance. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th day of August 1941." His X mark James Smith In presence of ........David Hanks Charles Harris Wilkes County, North Carolina Was duly proven February term 1842 It is important to note that in those early colonial days, if a woman was not mentioned specifically in a will, then she had no claim for (or very little) on any property or possessions regardless of her relationship to the deceased. So, James made a point to write a will that would insure a future for his daughter since she was still unmarried. He left her all his earthly possessions except his land (which is not mentioned in his will, but which James deeded to his son, James Anderson Smith in 1847). James wrote his will in August 1841, but lived for seven more years. However, just a few months after he wrote his will, Elizabeth, apparently in order to secure for her own possession the things her father had willed her, simply went into Wilkes County court and asked that the will be probated. Naturally the court officials took it for granted that James Smith was dead and so went ahead and probated the will. This is an unusual case, but it could, and evidently did happen because his will was actually probated in 1842, but he was still alive in 1847 when he deeded his land to his son. Two years after the will was probated, another interesting event occurred. Elizabeth had met a man named Jeremiah Richardson who she wanted to marry, but evidently the family disapproved. So she eloped and the family followed her a considerable distance in order to have the marriage set aside, but Elizabeth and Jerry went all the way to Indiana (a very long distance in those days). James lived until 1849 when he passed away at the age of 83 years and 3 months. The old James Smith homeplace is now owned by the Chatham family and lies 1/4 to 1/2 mile west of Doughton, North Carolina. The family cemetery is enclosed with an iron fence. Just five persons are buried there and their graves are marked with field stones. The five are James Smith, his wife Elizabeth (Hutchins) Smith, their son James Anderson Smith and his first wife, Mary, and also Jones Smith, son of James Anderson Smith and Mary.

    3. I was interested in the Campbell page posting because I have a Campbell ancestor: Margaret Campbell married John Alexander McRae, probably in Scotland but maybe in NC, before 1793. Their daughter, Effie McRae, b 4 May 1793 in NC, married Alexander Bain McRae 6 Jan 1814 in NC. Does anyone have any info on Margaret or John Alexander? Jackie Kersh

    3. Hi Joyce, Have you tried NARA? Go to NAIL (National Archives Information Locator); search "NAIL archival holdings"; check "digital copies only"; search keywords such as "Guion Miller"; click "display results"; check "select discription for viewing"; click "display selected hits"; click "thumbnails of online copies". Download takes quite a while, best to save your research on a disk. I checked briefly and didn't find your "Woods" on the Guion Miller but I didn't go into an exhaustive search. It does take some time so do this only if you have lots of time to spend on it. I find that I get better results if I don't put anything into the additional keyword fields, simply the name of the roll that I want to view. (Please forgive me if I have neglected any steps) I find that it is very difficult to do this research in NARA, it seems like a maze to me and I easily get lost, but what I do find is so valuable to me that I just keep trying anyway. There is much more information available and a good place to start is the "genealogy and family history" that NARA has listed. It (through NAIL) will give you the information that they have in their files, although most of it is not available online, but it does tell you where to look and will give you the record group # and microfilm # that you will need to do your further research. Best of Luck Valerie Karinen researching: NIXON and ELLIOTT in North Carolina late 1700's ---------- From: Joyce Reece Sent: Monday, December 20, 1999 7:15 PM To: NCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCROOTS] Cherokee Is any of the following lists online anywhere? Swetland Roll 1869 Hester Roll 1883 Chruchill Roll 1908 Guion Miller 1909 Does anyone have any suggestions? We are trying to verify that Hassletine Woods was Cherokee. Verbal info says she was but the 1870 Swaine Co. census says she was white. Hasseltine was born abt 1855 as she was 25 at the above mentioned census. Husband was M. (arion?) Woods. Marions mother was Sarah M. Woods. Joyce G. Reece ______________________________

    3. I am new to computer use so I am most likely doing something wrong, but when I tried to access this site I reached a site with "deny" on the end of the URL. Would appreciate help from anyone. I haven't subscribed to any of these services because I am really not sure which would be most beneficial and I am afraid I know very little about what I am doing. Thanks. Betty Bullock
