[Reposted for Joy, who isn't currently on the subscriber list. Please reply to her <EUZELIA@aol.com>, not to me. Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2000 11:13:23 -0800 (PST) From: EUZELIA@aol.com To: Hunsucker-L@rootsweb.com, NCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Adrianne, I have from the book *North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865* the following information. Company I, 37th Regiment This company, known as the "Mecklenburg Rifles," was raised in Mecklenburg County and was enlisted at Charlotte on October 22, 1861. It was mustered into state service on November 20, 1861, and was assigned to the 37 Regiment N.C. Troops as Company I. The company functioned thereafter as part of the 37th Regiment, and its history for the remainder of the war is reported as part of the regimental history. The information contained in the following roster was compiled principally from a company muster-in roll dated November 20, 1861, and from company muster rolls dated January-April, 1852; June 30, 1862-February 28, 1863; and July, 1863-February, 1865. No company muster rolls were found for November 20-December 31, 1862; May 1-June 29, 1862; March-June, 1863; and March-April, 1865. Valuable information was obtained from primary sources such as the North Carolina adjutant general's Roll of Honor, discharge certificates, medical records, prisoner of war records, pension applications, and Civil War histories, cemetery records, and records for the United Daughter of the Confederacy also provided useful information. Captains John K. Harrison Moses N. Hart John Irvin Elms William M. Stitt Hunsucker, James A., Private Previously served as Private in Company D, 42nd Regiment, N.C. Troops. Enlisted in this company at Liberty Mills, Virginia, January 28, 1864, for the war. Wounded at or near Gravel Hill, Virginia, July 28, 1864. Returned to duty in November-December, 1864. Captured near Petersburg, Virginia, April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 28, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Hunsucker, John W., Private Born in Mississippi and resided in Mecklenburg County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Mecklenburg County at age 17, October 22, 1861. Reported absent without leave in February, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland on or about September 17, 1862, "but was not in the battle." Reported absent without leave in November-December, 1862. Returned to duty in March-August, 1863. Deserted to the enemy on or about March 3, 1865. Sent to Washington, D.C., where he arrived on March 7, 1865. Released on an unspecified date after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Hunsucker, William J., Private Born in Mississippi and resided in Mecklenburg County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Mecklenburg County at age 20, October 22, 1861. Wounded at Shepherdstown, (West) Virginia, September 20, 1862. Returned to duty in January-February, 1863. Wounded in the thigh at Chancellorsville, Virginia, on or about May 3, 1863. Returned to duty in September-October, 1863. Present or accounted for through February, 1865. Paroled at Lynchburg, Virginia, April 13-15, 1865. I received a query on the NCGenWeb "help line" from a woman who is looking for the burial place of a Union soldier from the 9th Michigan Cavalry, Company L who was killed in action near "Solemn Grove, N.C." on March 10, 1865. This location isn't listed in Powell's _NC Gazetteer_ or on the GNIS query site. Does anyone on this list recognize this location? Or do we have a Civil War historian who knows what battles were taking place on March 10, 1865? Elizabeth Harris state coordinator, NCGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/

I am looking the parents of, or any information about MARSHALL CLARKE. He was.born c1836, and was living in the household of my gg-grandfather John Baylis CLARKE, Jr , born c1824and his family in the 1860 Anderson Co. SC census. John Baylis Clarke, Jr. was listed as a merchant tailor and Marshall was listed as a tailor. I feel certain that MARSHALL CLARKE is a relative of my CLARKE family in Anderson, SC. Finding his identity and his relationship to my Anderson SC Clarkes would go a long way toward determining the ancestry of John's father John Baylis CLARKE, Sr., born c1791in SC. I am looking for CLARKES from the mid-atlantic states who were tailors, a CLARKE who may have married a MARSHALL or amy information about a Marshall CLARKE born in the 1836 time frame. Any clues or information will be truly appreciated. Susan Clark Johanson -- Susan C. Robert Lee (Bob) Clark- M- Mary Elizabeth Boswell 5. Rose Ann Clark- M- John or James Askew 6. Boatman O. Clark - M-Daisy Reed 7. Minnie L. Clark 8. Narvella Elizabeth Clark (my ggrandmother) m- 1. There is a Lathem Family Cemetery in the Dacusville community of Pickens Co., SC, not NC. This is most likely near the Saluda River also. Two John Lathems are listed, but none who died in 1836. This cemetery is found in "Pickens County South Carolina Cemetery Survey" Volume One, beginning on page 40. This was compiled by the Old Pendleton Genealogical Society. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Granwan@aol.com> To: <NCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 02, 2000 12:20 PM Subject: [NCROOTS] Cemetery records in Pickens County > Does any one know if there are records of a cemetery in Pickens County near > the Saluda River? This is my brick wall: I descend from Alexander Dunn, b. in Rutherford, N.C. 1762, died in Chambers Co., Al. 1846, m. Christian Obedience O'Neal. Also married Tabitha Wooten. Alexander had brothers, Andrew, Samuel, and Joseph, all fought in Rev. War. Would love any information on this ancestor. Pat Dunn Sherwood
We've had several messages about census records lately so maybe it's time to review the places where you can find them. I'm listing the sources I use below. Some census records are available on line as part of the USGenWeb project. For NC records, go to either http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/census/states/northcar/northcar.htm or http://www.usgenweb.org/census/states/northcar/northcar.htm and you'll find a table of what is available, by year and by county. ******* John Longstreet Rhymes maintains the following page: http://wymple.gs.net/~longstrt/nc.html This page lists volunteers who will do lookups in census records that are not yet on line. ******* Ancestry.com has indexes to the heads of household, but these records are not in their regular free databases. ******* You can also get NC census records on microfilm from the National Archives, or on loan from them through your local public library, or at the NC state library in Raleigh, Wilson Library at UNC in Chapel Hill, and probably other sites as well. The Family History Centers of the LDS (Mormon) church also have the census microfilms. Elizabeth Harris state coordinator, NCGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/
