    1. [NCROOTS] GRIFFIN'S in Dubhunor NC ?, & Cumberland Co.
    2. Linda Harrison
    3. Has anyone any knowledge of such a place (Dubhunor NC)? It was stated as the birthplace of Dempsey GRIFFIN, born 1837, on some military information. Also on some documents a mention of 'Silver Run Creek' I believe in the area of Flea Hill District, now Eastover to Wade NC. Does anyone know of the where about of this Silver Run Creek? I have just returned from a research trip to NC, and finally made a connection in my GRIFFIN line. Per documents I found: Joseph GRIFFIN was in Cumberland Co. as early as 1787, and possibly made the move into Cumberland from Bladen Co. NC. Related to him, in Cumberland county is: a John, John Jr., Dempsey, Hardy, Bryant, Horatio, Lawrence, and possibly Samuel, and Coleman J. GRIFFIN. These are all connected on several Land Conveyance's (except for Samuel & Coleman J). Bryant of Cumberland Co. died in 1824, administrators to his estate were Mary GRIFFIN, and James LANE. James LANE is said to be the father of Hannah LANE that married Bryant GRIFFIN in Sumter Co. GA (no date) and by 1810 they are back in Cumberland Co. Would like to find the connection of these GRIFFIN'S in GA. Does anyone know of a marriage of Bryant & Hannah LANE of GA? There is also a document on 2 little girls that were orphaned in 1827, Nancy & Hannah GRIFFIN (their guardian that year was Dempsey GRIFFIN), in 1831 & 1837 their guardian is David McNEILL. Believe these girls could have been the daughters of Bryant (his wife was not named in the estate, only referred to as 'widow'). There are several other surnames with connections to this line, in land conveyance's: MIMS, HODGES, McALLISTER, ARMSTRONG, ELKINS, GADDIE, EVANS, MOORE, McCORQUODALE (Bryant GRIFFIN married Mary McCORQUODALE in 1821), LANE, McNEILL, McKETHAN, WILLIFORD (Sion WILLIFORD I believe married Mary GRIFFIN). Thanks for any help or knowledge anyone could supply, on these locations, or any connections to these GRIFFINS. Linda

    1. Re: [NCROOTS] Green & Rollin(s) Families
    2. I am accustomed to seeing both lines in VA . In fact , I just recently did a look-up for someone named Elizabeth who was searching for Rollin/Roland/Rawlins in the Albemarle Parish Register. Sorry I didn't save the name/message. I have a very early Green line (Lewis Green who married Susannah Grigg...in the 1600s) in Surry Co VA. that 'daughtered out' with the marriage of their daughter Frances Green to Ephraim Parham. You might sub to GREEN-L@rootsweb.com if you haven't already done so...there are several expert Green genealogists that contribute to the list regularly. 1. [NCROOTS] Green & Rollin(s) Families
    2. Good afternoon to the list! I'm trying several ways to get beyond my brick wall in a couple of my family lines. Thanks in advance for any help from anyone. If anyone has access to very early NC census records, does the following ring a bell anywhere: In a 1800 or 1810 census, I am looking for a John R. ROLLIN(S), b. possibly abt. 1800 in NC. In later years (1834) he married the daughter of Evan & Elizabeth Floyd who were from Columbus Co., NC. Perhaps Rollin(s) already knew his in-laws & wife-to-be before their marriage in Alabama? I am looking for him & hopefully his parent's names, ages, county of residence & siblings. Also looking for a GREEN family perhaps in the 1840 census, with a young daughter (abt 5 y.o.) named Bedie/Bedy Ann. Hopefully her parent's names, ages, county of residence & siblings can be found. This family probably moved down into GA, then on to AL. Thanks in advance to anyone who may have heard of either of these and will share.I have info from this point on, if it will help anyone. Regards, Donna in AL

    1. [NCROOTS] Women and property in Colonial NC
    2. How could a woman own property in Colonial North Carolina? I have a female ancestor in Edgecombe County that obtained a grant in the Granville District in 1762. There is no evidence of a husband. My understanding is that if a woman was widowed or single she could own land, and if married had to apply for a special document, as a "feme sole trader." But wouldn't she have had to prove her status one way or the other to the Granville agents in the first place, and might there not be a record thereof? I'm thinking that such a record, if available, would--if she was a widow or married--have the name of her husband. In this case she sells the land to her sons in 1784, and lives until at least 1794. Grateful for any help. Thanks, John Ottinger

    2. Sherry Davis-Ellis
    3. Hello I am searching for Samuel Davis born around 1790. I have no idea what county. He moved to Wi.lson Tenn around 1800. His fathers name could have been Joel Evins Davis, from Wales. Joel came to America around 1770. I have requesteed records on him from the Nara for Revolutionary papers but they were unable to locate Joel. Joel died in the Cumberland MTS before he could get to Wilson County Tenn. Also I am unable to find Joel's wife. I do not have her name. I am really stumped. I have records on Samuel with Chancery records but it does not mention his mother nor his father. IS there a way to gets records or can anyone do a look-up to see if there is anything in Cumberland mts on Joel Evins? Thank you Sincerely Sherry Davis-Ellis
