1. [NCROOTS] Idea to REPLACE roll calls
2. Hello all, I am a County Coordinator for GenWeb here in my home state of Indiana. My county list doesnt do roll calls at all and we've never really had a problem with people trying to start one up in the 2 years that I've been CC. I *think* what my people (ones searching in this county) do is go to the various county pages and post their surnames, as well as look for their surnames. Say your relatives were mainly in Alamance Co NC...you would go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncalaman/surnames.html and post your names or look for them. Most county pages have these lists of surnames and the people who are looking for or have info on them. There are a LOT of people visiting those pages that arent on this list...you are probably more likely to make a direct connection there than doing a roll call. Just an idea... Kathy PS. My apologies to any CC's that might suddenly get swamped with surnames to add tonight :) Firstmoms Genealogy Resources -North Carolina

1. [NCROOTS] Re: A Word About Roll Calls
2. Hi everyone, I most certainly agree with the postings of Lou Overton and Cindy in NC concerning putting more info in our queries other than roll call. Lou and Cindy both have access to many books and records for NC and both so graciously take their time to help us with our research by doing lookups, and believe me it can be time consuming. Let's all do our share and help them by listing Given Name, Dates & Counties (if known). Thanks to Cindy & Lou for the help you have given all of us. It is much appreciated. Test. J.P. Matthews, CC Joseph, Sr. shows up on the 1830 Census with his wife. He was 75 years old We have Joseph Application for his Rev War Pension. It states his age of 78 on November 13, 1832. EXCERPTS FOR REV WAR PENSION APPLICATION DATED NOV 13, 1832 Joseph Sr applied for this revolutionary War Pension on November 13, 1832 in Wythe Co., Va. The actual pension request record in the Wythe County Order Book 1829-1833 pages 425-427. It indicates the he enlisted as a regiment of Va Militia commanded by col. Andrew Lewis in Fincastle County (now Montgomery County) in the Company of Henry Polling who resided in Botetourt County. Under Capt Polling's command, he marched to the mouth of the New River on an expedition against the Indians in 1774. He continued in the service for about ten months until late in 1775. He was at the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1775. After the battle, he remained with the Company under the command of Capt Wiliam Russell for some months after most of the company had disbanded. After that tour, he went to Fincastle County (Wythe County by 1832) where he was officially discharged. He entered the service again as a militia man in a company commanded by Capt John Taylor in 1776 or 1777. That company was later commanded by Capt Thomas Burk and he remained on that tour about three months. The service was against the Indians and the company was generally stationed about the mouth of Indian and Rich Creeks which are tributaries of the New River. About 1787, he then entered a company commanded by Capt Henry Patton and in the regiment commanded by Col William Preston. He marched to North Carolina and was at the Battle of Whetsels Mill which occurred a short time before the Battle at Guilford Courthouse. He was in a sharp engagement at what was called Reedy Fork of the New River. He was not away from home on this tour longer than a month or six weeks. His testimony was verified by James Harbison of Wythe County and Thomas Farley of Giles county who indicated that they also believe him to be 78 years of age at the tim e the Pension Application was dated. Thomas Farley knew him when he was a Soldier in the company commanded by Henry Patton and the regiment commanded by Col. William Preston. Farley also testified that he knew Joseph when he was under the command of Captain Taylor. New note from Alice Street - Joseph may have been a Courier for George Washington

They lived in Iowa probaby until about 1890 and then appear on the 1910 census for Spencer NC on Godhin or Yodkin St. between Fifth and Sixth St. (married 38 years at the time.) They apparently had 8 children but only 3 were alive in 1910. On the 1920 census, Duncan STEWART is 70 years old and living with his son Andrew STEWART b. in Iowa in 1885 and Andrew's wife Fannie (Duncan's wife must have died between 1910 and 1920) living on Gredell St. in Spencer NC. In 1938 on the death of my grandfather, Duncan STEWART was included in the obituary as if he was still alive, making him 88 years old. However this is far from conclusive information. On the 1920 census, I found another offspring of Duncan, Bessie (Stewart) ALLWELL, b.1879 in Iowa married to Harris ALLWELL on Gredell St. in Spencer NC The men of the family all worked for the railway co. Southern Railroad ? in Spencer, probably from the time the shops opened there, as machinists. I even saw a book on Rowan Co. with a picture of workers, not identified, and a chap in the front row sitting looked very much like my grandfather and could easily be my great uncle. Are their directories available for that area of NC that indicate workers, address, occupation? I have seen these for other areas but have not been able to identify if North Carolina has such directories. Are the newspaper obituaries for the area archived in any way, indexed in any way? I wish to get death certificates for Duncan, his wife Francis and his son Andrew. Could you advise me how to proceed? I have downloaded the form for more recent deaths from the vital statistics site, but I understand the earlier ones are archived and I have to send for them separately with a fee of $8 for each search. I have my request all ready to go, but I am so unclear as to the death dates of these 3 target people that it may be beyond the scope of workers in the records office to pin down. I hope to visit Spencer at some point and find the grave sites for the 3 target people. Our family has been putting markers on unmarked graves for the older family members, as a project. We hope to confirm that the 3 people Duncan, wife Francis and son Andrew are suitably identified. My grandfather Andrew was an inventor as well and we have a working model 1 foot high of a steam engine prototype he developed in about 1890. He came from Scotland to Spencer in about 1910 to find work and ending up staying in North America as well. The model engine may be of some interest to the museum of the Spencer area. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Gloria Beek nee Stewart St. Petersburg FL --part1_ca.ca7514cb.25ad5be6_boundary--

1. [NCROOTS] Family Story
2. Diane Johnson
3. My surnames are : Johnson, Maddill(or with W), Barnes, Avery, Weeks, Godwin, Moore. The surnames this story has to do with is the Barnes, who was suppose to be my kin. It came from one of the best history teachers that ever was in the start of N.C.. I don`t really have first names, my memiorly ain`t that good, But you`ll see if you`ll have ever heard a story sounding anything like this in your family histories and we may be kin. During 1860`s there was a ? Barnes in Johnston or Harnett county that either was to old to go to war or had the money to stay out of it.( May have had childern in war don`t no,). He must have had a good bit of money or gold, from what he did in late 1864 and early 1865, before Sherman`s Yankee army come in. When they did come they new were to go, somebody in the surrounding country had told about ? Barnes`s rich`s. Anyhow the Yank`s came. They done bad things to ? barnes, but he wouldn`t tell them anything. They got tried of messing with him after awhile so they left but they left ? Barnes hangind in his well by his neck. Someone after a day or two came by the Barnes place, they didn`t see ? barnes anywhere. They went to get some water out of the well, and they found ? Barnes hanging there. He was near dead but he lived on a few years. But the Yank`s didn`t get his money. The name he was called after that is one of the most important parts of the story and my mind is blank, it had something to do with the way he walked I think. But anyhow if some else know of this story you maybe kin. Thank You, James L. Johnson Jr.
