Hello Listers, I am asking your help on my brick wall. I am trying to locate a Calvin Smith born about 1836 someplace in North Carolina. I do not have a county name. I am trying to find him and who his parents are. I know that he migrated from NC to Tennessee and into Missouri on the 1880 Missouri Census. I would think he was probably born close to the Tennessee border in North Carolina. Any help anyone could give me would be most appreciated. Thanks! The envelope is addressed as follows; note I used all caps in the surnames: Colerain NC Free April 13th (?). H. ETHERIDGE P.M. Mr. John BATEMAN "Pine Bluff" Arkansas (Letter content follow:) Colerain, Apl 12, 1850 Mr. John BATEMAN Dear Sir: Your letter dated Nov. 10th last was duly received, and in compliance with your request I availed myself of the first oppurtunity to give attention to is contents. Accordingly I wrote immediately the Clerk of Chowan Cty. Court, & sent the letter by a man going there, with a request for the Clerk to answer it forthwith. He sent me word that he would write me which kept me in suspence for sometime, and at last did not write to me. I then wrote a lawyer; & not hearing from him, I concluded I would go the next court myself, & try to acertain all about the matter. Accordingly I went over there this week and learned that your sister Rebecca BLOUNT is still living, but quite infirm & in bad health. I will now say something of your other relatives & friends so far as my memory serves me. I presume you have heard of the deaths of cousin Everitte (?) GARRETT as he has been dead 3 or 4 years. Aunt Cellia HOLLEY, Aunt Elizabth MCDOWELL & James HOLLEY son of Thomas are dead. Indeed, all of the old stock, except Henry WARD, is dead. He is now living here engaged in Mercantile busiess. David O. ASKEW (?) my brother-inlaw is also dead. He died in Miss. last August. His family now lives there. There has been a great deal of sickness in this section of the country & and a great many deaths. Four of which has occured in this place in about a month, one of whom was my little son 2 years old. I have a little daughter about 10 mos. old--a very fine healthy child. Hinderson WILSON of this place, son of James died last Feby. There have been so many changes since you left this county that the present order of things & race of beings are so nearly (?) new to you that a history of them would not be very interesting I imagine. Suffice it to say that I think we are improving much as (?) & bulding. You would hardly recognize old Colerain now. So much in the place improved. I am now engaged in fishing--but catching very few--I am so much hurried that I have not time to write more at present. I hope to hear from you again soon, and then I will try to give you a letter of morre interest. In the mean time I remain Very truly your fr'd (?). H. ETHRIDGE (?) contemplation (?) going South next summer or fall, & if I do, I will try to give you a call. Do you know where cousin Martha GARRETT, or MILLER lives? jShe married MILLER you know & moved away west. ___________________________________ I believe the parents of John BATEMAN of Pine Bluff, Arkansas were John BATEMAN and Miriam PERISHO of Perquimans County. In July 1830, Rebecca BATEMAN of Hertford, Perquimans County, sister of John BATEMAN of Pine Bluff, married John BLOUNT Esq. of Edenton, Chowan County. Parents of Mary Garrett, first wife of John Bateman of Pine Bluff, were David and Mary Garrett of (???). Any assistance in researching the above Bateman/Garrett/Perisho family lines would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the length of this posting--flames accepted. Newbie. Rich Borges
The quest continues for the parents of Barnabas Stevens (b. abt 1825 in North Carolina). He married Pauline Dupuyin WBR, Louisiana, and they had several children there..... I think he might be related to Barnabas Stevens who married Lydia Oates in NC (circa 1700's)..possibly his grandfather.... Anyone who has info on this family please email me! Thanks!!

Do you have any idea who this Calvin SMITH married? I find 4 Calvin SMITH's between ages of 30 to 39yrs on the 1870 NC census. I do not find him on the 1870 TN census or the 1870 MO census. Might be able to connect him if you have a spouse's name. Thank you. Ruth in NC e-mail: RLugowski@aol.com

Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2000 20:00:57 -0800 (PST) From: Dan Fairfax <dfair777@home.com> FRANK FAIRFAX CHINA GROVE Frank Fairfax, 94, died Thursday, Jan. 13 in Columbus County Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home. ============================================================ Frank Fairfax, to my knowledge, was the oldest living Fairfax, and now the first FAIRFAX to pass away in the 2nd Millenium, A.D., 2000. He was a pleasure to know and I deeply enjoyed my personal time with Frank and his family during my visits with him at his home in August, 1998 when he personally remembered the name of his grandfather, Thomas "Tom" Fairfax, Private in the Confederate States Army, North Carolina Troops. We shall endeavor to continue his memory in our research of FAIRFAX Family History. His eyes gleamed when he mentioned "Tom" Fairfax in our conversation, even though he had never met his grandfather, for Private Thomas Fairfax, CSA gave his life in a battle near Petersburg, Virginia while honorably serving with the 51st Regiment, Infantry, North Carolina Troops, Confederate States Army. I will miss you Mr. Frank Fairfax and my dear cousin. Best regards and in memory of, Dan Fairfax 2629 Somerset Drive Nashville, Tennessee 37217

Hello again! Ok, I got a lot of replies about the roll call issue and surname pages. People asked where these pages were. Actually your best bet is to go to the appropriate GenWeb County page and you should find them. Tonight I made a MAJOR addition to Firstmoms NC page....108 links added! It took 2-3 hours but I did it...I went to every one of the NC county pages and put the links to their Surname and/or Query page on a list on my NC page. Ok, well I went to most of them, some I just went to their query board and posted that link cus it seems that not many do the good ole fashioned surname pages anymore. Hate to tell them...visitors love the original surname pages! If you are a CC and don't see your surnames page listed please let me know. Here's the address again for those who didn't save it to favorites yet. http://members.tripod.com/~KHuish/northc.htm Firstmoms Genealogy Resources -North Carolina I need to get a little work in on other states soon too! Hello everyone, I am hoping maybe someone can help me with a small problem. I am looking for a small town in Halifax County, North Carolina call " BUCHARIA TWP" I have run up again a brick wall. I contacted the Historic Halifax Assoc. and here is a portion of the message that was sent back to me --- I quote > ""We do not have any information on Bucharia Twp nor have we run across it in the limited research that we have > done in the county. Our primary interpretation time frame is 1760-1840 for > the town of Halifax. As the county seat our research on Halifax town does > lead to info on the county but we are not familiar with Bucharia."" > In the 1870 census my greatgggrandfather is list as Porter, William - -61 - - m - - w -- birthplace Nc -- County Halifax -- Locality Bucharia Twp. We feel if we can locate this township that it will be a big help to us in our research. We have check all maps we can find even to this time period. If any one have a idea I would be very grateful for the help. Thank you all for your time in reading this request Regards, Patti
