I cannot speak for North Carolina road maps, but I have a hunch the Department of Transportation would sell you a county map or two. For instance, I do know that the Virginia Department of Transportation sells maps for individual counties, and, for some counties, seemingly as many as five maps per county. I was advised by one the Librarians at the VSL to consult these for creeks, rivers, etc. These are not cluttered up the way with detail as AAA maps are. Another good source for uncluttered state maps probably is in your public library, but it cannot be easily photocopied because of the size of the book (atlas.) It is called Rand McNally Commercial Atlas and Marketing Guide (huge by book standards). In the back is a state-by-state guide where one can find listed even tiny places, along with population figures. Helpful in finding rural areas. Many public libraries of any size have a copy of this atlas. It comes out annually. If your library has one, ask when they are goung to replace it, and may you put in a bid for the old one (if you have room). I use my old copy about once a week or so. I bought it at a Friends of the Library sale. Just something else to add to the genealogical clutter in your house! E.W.Wallace in southern California

Afternoon, Call someone tell me if North Carolina has a roster for the men that enlisted in the war of 1812. I am looking for a John Porter from Halifax County area Thank you or your time Patti
Have you tied mapquest on the net. It will give you a detailed map of an area . Just plug in the site you want say main street to Bailey Branch Rd. and you can enlarge it many times. the address is: http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_register?screen=ia_register&link=ia_register&uid=406a4q10502wdcj&random=419 That may be an old one I tried but can use it to get in. There is no cost to register so you can find the roads you need. Ronnie from Madison years ago Ibeachball@aol.com wrote: > I was wondering if anyone lives in Madison County, NC. Hi all, your friendly Firstmom here. I sent for my ggrandfathers pension record from the national archives. I sent the request in about February 1998 and got it sometime late May 1998. It cost $10 at the time. I don't know if theyve raised it. I have a guy on my Genealogy Researcher's List that could probably get it faster, and he charges $18 for military records and $31 for invalid and widows pension. A little more cost but could probably save you a couple months worth of anticipation....and I believe the fee includes all photocopying and postage as well. You can read his description and get a link to his homepage which has more details of what he offers by going to: http://members.tripod.com/~KHuish/research.html Scroll down to Maryland, McCullough genealogy. He lives a short distance from D.C. so it's quicker and easier ordering from him. Good luck all! Hi; You might try your local AAA office. They have some pretty good maps, and if you are a member, they are free. The NC Gazetteer, on page 374, lists: Pawpaw Creek, rises in s Madison County and flows ne into French Broad River. There is a Paw Creek township, former township in w central Mecklenburg County, now township number 12. Hi Folks, Thanks to all of you who sent the records URLs. When I sent for my records all of this on-line stuff did not exist! No, I am not older than God, just close to it <LOL>! I really appreciate having the information too as I lost mine in the Great Crash. I also had forgotten that there was a specific form that I had to use, so thanks for jogging my memory. One thing I do remember, you must ask for a copy of ALL the records or you will get just the "bare bones" records. Good luck to all fo you who are looking. Jean Hancock

I was wondering if anyone lives in Madison County, NC. I am trying to obtain a county road map for Madison Co. from whichever agency would handle such a thing -- state roads?, dept. of transportation?, county roads? I would like to find the address, snail or email, so that I can write to request a map. I tried finding several cemeteries in Madison Co. last fall, but the roads are poorly marked and my atlas didn't show even half of the roads. Additionally, has anyone ever heard of an area called PawPaw? I think it is on the west side of the French Broad River someplace near Little Pine Creek. I'd appreciate any help or suggestions.
