    1. Williams and McNeal in or Around Caswell Co.
    2. Dear Listers I need help in identifying the principals, their relationship to each other, their descendants, and particularly their ancestors, as appear in this abstracted document: WILLIAMS, Nathan of Rutherford Co., Tennessee, 15 Jun 1821 appoints Hosea MCNEIL of Caswell Co., NC, attorney to recover from the estate of Thomas MCNIELL deceased or of Ann MCNIELL, deceased, late of Person Co., NC, said WILLIAMS' legacy <in right of my wife Frances.> (As appeared in Ransom McBride "Migration As Shown in Powers of Attorney," in NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL JOURNAL, Vol. 8, Feb 1982, p. 33) This is also being posted in the Williams List and in the McNeal List. Is the father of Nathan Williams, Henry Williams who died testate in Caswell Co., NC ca 1786? If not, who is his father? If Henry is his father, I have information to exchange. I have a hunch about the McNeils but only a hunch. Evelyn W. Wallace hdanw@aol

    1. [NCROOTS] ANDERSON/COOK/PAVEY/WILLIAMS/FENNEL
    2. Marsha McWilliams
    3. Hello Everyone, Trying to locate information on the PAVEY and connecting families in the 1700's in North Carolina. Am hoping someone may be able to help with some new clues or ideas. Pasquotank Co (1754) shows a Samuel, Sarah and Webley PAVEY listed. There was a Samuel PAVEY listed as a Colonial Soldier (Pasquotank), in the 1750's, he was also a chain bearer there in 1755. We believe he migrated to VA ca. 1760; Sarah PAVEY died in the 1790's and in her will, she only named her FENNEL son (John) and his children. Webley PAVEY we have nothing on. Samuel Pavey, Jr. (b: 1761, Accomac Co, VA) enlisted in the Rev. War (according to his pension applic.) in 1781 (other records show 1782.) The Guilford Co. Courthouse does not have him listed (Gov. records do.) Samuel Pavey (father? son?) is found in the later part of the 1780's in Sussex Co, DE. Listed on the 1790 Caroline Co, MD census there is an Isaac and John PAVEY (brothers of Samuel, all sons of Samuel.) John PAVEY married an ANDERSON. Her family was connected to the Nicolites and they migrated to Guilford Co (Jamestown area @ Deep River) ca. 1800 (this is my line.) On the 1800 Guilford Co census there is listed a Levin WILLIAMS. We believe that this Levin's wife may have been Mary "Polly" PAVEY and that she was living with family in Lincoln Co, NC, estranged from Levin by 1818. They are said to have had a large family (and a daughter may have married into the GUNTERs in Guilford Co.) In the 1816 testate papers of Margaret COOK, there is a Rebecca Pavey who received part of her estate. We believe she was the daughter of John Pavey, and married Richard OZMENT. Also listed as receiving part of the estate is an Isaac ANDERSON and David STACK. The OZMENTs were also from Caroline Co, MD. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Marsha McWilliams Researching: PAVEY/PEAVEY/PEAVY and all its' spellings/mis-spellings. Researching: The Nicolites and their families.

    2. Glenna Milligan
    3. Hi Fellow Researchers: Does anyone have the 1850 Randolph Co. census who would be willing to look up the entry for William Fields with a wife named Sarah. It would least a Martha, Catherine and possibly a Peter as their children. This would be my gt gt grandparents. I am having great difficulty tracing them to exactly where they were in NC. Their last child was born in Guilford, but other tidbits gained through marriage bonds of a couple other children lead me to think they may be found in Randolph. I sure would appreciate any help I could get. Glenna

    3. hi sally - you might want to write to the New Hanover County Public Library at 201 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, North Carolina 28401 about who you are searching for. i did and, on christmas eve [what a great christmas present] received from them some very important information on my father's family. my gg grandfather and gg grandmother were also married at st. james episcopal church. the library sent me photocopies of church records that covered all the entries they had on my father's surname. also, st. james' epis church has a website. it is <http://stjamesparish.churches.wilmington.org/page2.html>. if you have trouble with that site address, let me know. my chubby little fingers don't always do what my worn out brain cell tells them. you may also want to write to the North Carolina Dept of Cultural Resources at 109 East Jones Street, Raleigh, North Carolina 27601 and ask about any relatives that you think might be buried in n.c. they have the records of the WPA cemetery survey that were done in the 1930s and 40s. they found 3 of my family, which helped when i wrote to the new hanover library. always, when you write to one of these sources, include as much information as you have on each person, i.e. full names, birth dates, death dates, places of birth and death, etc. arrange your information so that it is as easy to read as possible. hope this helps. julie thames howell, jax, fla surnames: THAMES and DUDLEY SALLY228@aol.com wrote: > Hello, I am new to the list. 1. [NCROOTS] News Articles from Buncombe/Yancey County
    2. Michele Donnelly
    3. Hello List! I have some very tattered news clippings for an Asheville, NC newspaper that I recently found in my grandmother's belongings after she passed away. The first one is from the sometime during the 1950's (year is cut off) and is concerning the shooting deaths of Jesse Job, Royce Wheeler, and Nealy McIntosh of Burnsville. The second is about the death of Deputy Sherriff William E. (Bud) Towe of Prices Creek. My Grandfather was a pall bearer at this funeral. No date on it. The third is about the election of Donald Banks to Sherriff in Burnsville. No date on it. The last one concerns a gun battle between Raleigh J. Styles, and Stanley Perkins near Burnsville. No dates here either. Apparently my grandmother, Vergie Ayers had some type of relationshop with these people, but I do not know what that relationship was. If anyone would like copies of these articles, or more information - contact me personally, and I will gladly share them - if one of these people is Kin, I would be happy to forward the articles. Regards, Michele Ayers Donnelly

    2. If the NC Dept of Transportation is set up like the State of Alabama, you should be able to contact them at their state headquarters & get a good set of maps for each county of the state, with every dirt road marked and most all the churches and cemeteries (named & unnamed) already marked on them, too. Give this a try--it was a BIG help to me. 1. [NCROOTS] Help Again Please?
    2. Diane Johnson
    3. I really do appreciate you`ll folks try to help yesterday. But it looks like they hadn`t anybody got what I needed as far as U.S. or State archives when it comes to John Johnson`s Military records. They`ve just got were he was from, were he enlisted, dates, then to were he was wounded near Drewry`s Buff, Va. May 14-16 and took to a Hosp.#9 in Richmond, Va. Winder, then they nobody knows. I know what didn`t happen as far as I can find, he never came home. So I need to see if you`ll will try an look up John Johnson abt.1827 and Smithy Maddill`s abt.1826 marrage records, sometime during the 1840`s. I`ve been trying for awhile and haven`t come up with anything. Some of you all may have the resources to find them. I not sure were it would have took place, in 1850 they were in N.C. and from then on. Thanks for any help. James L. Johnson Jr.

    1. [NCROOTS] Re: Given Names for census
    2. Hi everyone, I do not want to start a big discussion on naming patterns here, but I saw a post that had names that looked like they were given names shortened into nicknames. I think the name I saw was a Nellie. My family registered all Given Names in the census using nicknames. Why I have no idea, unless it was easier in KY to just phoentically say the nickname and how my family and the census taker could spell it. My g.g.g. grandmother's name was Margrette Bernetta Snyder (she was known as Bertie and recorded as such on the census records) my g.g.g.grandfather's name was Martin Van Buren STORM ( recorded as Martin Van Buren on the census, no STORM surname ) My Nellie (g.g.grandmother) was short for Margaret Anellia (Nellie), my grandmother's name was Susan Armelda ( nickname was "Sudie") just makes this genealogy all the more interesting. 1. [NCROOTS] MOORE, ASHE, SWANN, LILLINGTON, PORTER New Hanover County
    2. Hello, I am new to the list. My first Moore ancestor in North Carolina was "King" Roger Moore who married Mary RAYNOR. Roger Moore moved to NC in about 1725. Their son George Moore married Mary ASHE, and they went to church in Wilmington, at ST James Episcopal Church. Their son, George Moore JR married Elizabeth Watters. I have no records, except family notes on this marriage. They were also in New Hanover County and in Willmington. I believe they lived in a plantation called "Moorefields." They had 3 children, one of whom lived to produce off spring and that was Sarah Moore who married a rich boy from Halifax, named Samuel McCulloch. They moved to TN, but he died when his horse crossed Duck Creek. She moved on with the wagon train and gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth McCulloch. Sarah met and married James Jackson in Nashville. Please if this story sounds familiar, or if you are a cousin of mine, please let me hear from you. Sally Moore Brace sally228@aol.com
