    1. [NCROOTS] Re: [NCLINCOL-L] Re: NCLINCOL-D Digest V00 #16
    2. Neal Caskey
    3. Dear Ann, The cemetery conflict mentioned is a cemetery in Iron Station NC, eastern Lincoln County. It is the old Jacob Dellinger cemetery. It is over 200 years old and has been abandoned for years. While I was researching my book on Leepers Creek Jacob Dellinger we found this cemetery. We approached the land owner and asked permission to enter the cemetery and catalog the stones. The land owner Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Jane Green refused to grant permission, stating that they felt it was idol worship. Even the county has tried to get them to reconsider. We tried to purchase the cemetery and the county offered them a tax credit if they would donate the property to the county. All of this has been refused. The Charlotte Observer Newspaper as well as the Lincoln Times News did articles about the conflict but the land owner still refuses to grant us permission. We filed a lawsuit and the against the owner and through legal counsel filed a counter claim asking the court to force us to remove the graveyard from his property. He also asked that the lawsuit be dismissed because when we filed the suit we did not file against his wife as well. The Clerk of Court tried to set the case for mediation but Mr. Green refused, so it is set for trial Monday before the Clerk of Court. 2. I don't know what the laws are in Texas or other states, but my understand of Virginia law is that a landowner cannot bar you from visiting a known ancestral grave on their property, however, they can bar you from tramping on their property to search for a graveyard. Please, someone more knowledgeable than me, correct me if I am wrong. Pat in Va.

    2. Neal. doesn't the State have laws to make the owner let people in to the cemetery? That is the most ridiculous thin I have heard of. I heard there were some people in Texas, who wouldn't let people in. But to want them to move the cemetery? That is just too much. Good Luck in your quest. Wanda in MS

    1. [NCROOTS] Census for Moore, Chatham and Sampson Co.
    2. Hello, I am new to this list, and new to the genealogy thing in general, and I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. Perhaps my ignorance will be revealed when I ask, but is there a particular place to go to find comprehensive census reports? I have been to the rootsweb and visited the county sites, but can find nothing. Is there somewhere else I am supposed to go or am I missing something? I would like to view the Census reports for the early 1800's for Moore, Chatham and Sampson Counties. My family names are Brown,Williams, McNeil and Myrick (Moore Co.), Myrick and Albright (Chatham) and Fisher (Sampson). I only know a few details and am trying to fill in the blanks, as are probably most of you. I do know for sure that my ggg grandfathers in the Civil war was William Wesley Brown, b. 1838(?), Elias Williams, b. 1841, and William J. Fisher, b. 1829/d.1863. I do have the 1860 Census on William J. Fisher, his father was Saunders Fisher, but I cannot find anything on him. I have the NC Troops Volumes on the others in the Civil war, but other than that I have nothing and I have no idea where to go. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. 3. Linda, I would not get very far on the backroads of North Carolina without my North Carolina Atlas & Gazetteer, by DeLorme Mapping, though it is now very ragged and torn. It is reasonably priced and has detailed maps with lots of information. All the WalMarts and the Barnes & Noble Booksellers in North Carolina carry them. However, if you are in another state, your best bet may be to have a Barnes & Noble (or other bookstore) order a copy for you - I'm sure they would be able to get it in just a few days. More detailed topographical maps, which show all the little gravel roads and name all the mountain peaks, are available for areas of western NC in some of the bookstores and nicer gift shops - but right off hand I cannot tell you which ones. When lived in western NC, I found this type of map a necessity. I did a search for maps of western North Carolina and found the following site: http://www.fredsgeneral.com/maps.html Although I am not familiar with this particular site, it looks like exactly the type of place where you should be able to buy a good topographical map which would make your next trip to Madison County more successful. The online material indicates it was commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Horton. Perhaps there is some record of his assignments during the War. Thanks for any help. Brett F. 1. [NCROOTS] Elijah ROBERTS, 1795-1848 - NC >> Indiana and/or Ohio
    2. Douglas/Ungaro
    3. Elijah Roberts, African American, migrated from Northhampton County, North Carolina, to western Ohio in 1825. Seems he eventually settled in Indiana. The info below on Elijah Roberts comes from the Indiana History Society website, in the personal history collections. http://www.indianahistory.com/aahcpers.htm ROBERTS, Elijah (1795-1848) Papers, 1832-1972 reference: M 325, 1 box, Collection Guide Elijah Roberts migrated from Northhampton County, North Carolina, to western Ohio in 1825. By 1830 he and some of his relatives purchased government land and formed a community known as Beech Settlement in Rush County. After the rapid depletion of available land in Rush County, residents of the Beech and newcomers began to seek land farther west and north. Elijah Roberts and his cousins, Willis and Hanson Roberts and Micajah Walden, ventured to Jackson Township in Hamilton County, making initial land purchases during the summer of 1835. An abundance of the settlers in the township were surnamed Roberts and, the area became known as Roberts Settlement. The materials in the collection mostly pertain to Elijah Roberts and other family members: son Peter, daughter Martha, and granddaughter Almary Roberts Wallace. There is a copy of Elijah Roberts's 1820 certificate of freedom and his last will and testament. His many business papers spanning the middle third of the nineteenth century include tax receipts, land appraisals, and numerous promissory notes.
