    1. [NCROOTS] Re: Census 2000
    2. This info. was posted on another list I'm on. Seems like a good idea. The year 2000 is a Census Year. Most of the census will be taken by mail. After you have filled out your census form why not make a copy of it and file with your important (genealogy) papers. Then your family will not have to wait 70 years to learn about you. 1. Re: [NCROOTS] Goose Creek - Onslow County or Craven Co.
    2. Richard Barnes
    3. Not sure about Goose Creek, but there are two New Rivers in NC. There is the one in the west, which ironically is one of the oldest rivers in north America. There is also the New River in the southeast, the whole of which is located in present day Onslow County. That New River holds the distinction of being the widest for its length of any in the US, if my memory serves me correctly. Around its mouth is the very large Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base. The Neuse starts much deeper in the state and reaches the coast near Craven Co (New Bern area), just northeast of Onslow and north of Carteret Co. Thank you, Malinda Jones

    1. [NCROOTS] Cemetery Hearing
    2. Neal Caskey
    3. We had our hearing today on the cemetery conflict in Lincoln Co. I would like to thank those of you that showed up. Unfortunalty, it was continued again to allow more paperwork to be filed. However, there is a possibility (although I'm not sure yet) that the County may join the law suit. That would be wonderful. Again I will keep you posted if any thing comes up. 1. [NCROOTS] Goose Creek - Onslow County or Craven Co.
    2. Early patents of North Carolina mention persons who were clustered on Goose Creek of the New or Neuse River. Depending on the time period, it was either in Craven Co. or in Onslow Co. Am a little vague about county boundaries here. However, I believe some of these patents appear in one of the land grant books compiled by Margaret M. Hofmann. Goose Creek, my memory seems to tell me, was on the north side of the River. Speight and Brunson were some of the land grantees, as I also seem to remember. And that's my two cents worth. E.W. 3. Census records are available from about 1790 through 1920 (1930 will not be made public until 2002 I think). Some are indexed and some are not. I was told that the 1890 census' are incomplete, lost due to fire. Just make sure the library to where you are going does indeed have census reports. Not all do. A lot of reports are now on-line. Lynda LJB wrote: I will be visiting some libraries this weekend in NC to do some research. However, I am not exactly sure what I should look for. I know to look for Census reports. 1. Re: [NCROOTS] Check out Emigrants to the Carolinas from Scotland 1774
    2. It's odd...they list McDonalds. I always thought the distinction between Scottish and Irish was that Irish was MC and Scottish was MAC. Thats why many Irish, upon arriving in America and finding how they (Irish) were treated, changed their spellings to MAC to sound Scottish. Not saying that list of people was wrong. I'm saying my thought of the naming patterns must be wrong, or not as strict as I thought. Anyone know more on this? 2. It was from a woman on the North Carolina mail list. She just sent me the information and I decided to share it with the McFarland list. Actually I have started to copy everything I find about other McFarland families and saving it in a separate notebook. Who knows when it might be the missing piece of information I need to make my next connection. Here's the location of the list or go on Cyndislist and subscribe. NCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Conni in Ohio

    1. [NCROOTS] Dating Tombstones
    2. Jackie Kersh
    3. For anyone interested, there is a great Elderhostel program in Boston on dating tombstones, not only by materials but by the type of carvings, etc. It is taught by a retired professor who is now historian for Mount St. Albans Cemetery in Cambridge. See Elderhostel catelog for dates. I went last year and loved it. Jackie Kersh
