    1. [NCROOTS] KELLERS in Kings Creek
    2. Shirley Evans
    3. Is anyone on the list familiar with the KELLERS from Kings Creek, Caldwell Co., NC? My grandmother (Sarah Jane Keller, b. 18 FEB 1873) was born there. Her mother was Susan Keller of Lenoir, and I am told that her father was Calvin Kirby Keller (Susan's first husband, David E. Keller did survive the Civil War). Her mother Susan had two children by David Keller and then had three children by Calvin (my grandmother being the youngest). This is the story that I've been given, but I can't find anything on Calvin Keller. There are a lot of mysteries involved and I would love to solve them. Has anyone ever heard of a "Calvin Kirby Keller" from that area? I don't know if he was kin to David E. Keller, or not. I am stumped. Any help would be appreciated. Shirley Evans in TX

    1. [NCROOTS] Purcell Family of Mecklenburg Co., NC
    2. Doug Purcell
    3. Seeking information on a PURCELL family that was living in the Mecklenburg Co., NC area c 1830-1840. Albert Leland PURCELL (c 1832-c 1900) was a son of this family. About 1836 a fire killed his father and members of the family scattered to Georgia and Florida to live with relatives. Information that I have indicates that this family was a member of Fayetteville or Steele Creek Church near Charlotte, NC. I assume that it was a Presbyterian Church since members of this family were Presbyterian in the latter part of the 19th century. Is this church still in existence? If so have any early records survived from this church? Thanks for any assistance offered. Doug Purcell 633 North Randolph Avenue Eufaula, AL 36027-1209 dpurcell@the-link.net or dpurcell@zebra.net

    1. [NCROOTS] research
    2. Tony and Julie Howell
    3. hello all - this morning i was "browsing" and discovered the most amazing site. the name of the site is "CIS, Representing Lexis-Nexis in the Academic and Public Library Markets". It is just that, a resource for colleges/universities/libraries to purchase these VERY extensive research materials. the costs, if you go to their price lists, are staggering - obviously for institutions of higher learning and not individuals. the actual research that this site itemizes cannot be "pulled up" on the computer BUT...it gives a powerful list of available research material that individuals might be able to get access to through public libraries, college libraries, etc. the summaries of each research category/document are quite lengthy... certainly enough in many cases to ascertain whether or not it would be worth the time to further investigate the subject for personal research. the vast array of surnames included in each of the summaries is staggering. anyone interested in texas, the summary on the section "The Bexar Archives, 1717-1836" is worth reading. the section on the "Series on Southern Women" is fascinating. The site location is: <http://www.lexis-nexis.com/cispubs/Catalog/upa_toc.htm> There are 3 main sections; American Studies, International Studies, and Social Sciences & Humanities. Click on "American Studies" for starters. Then click on "Colonial and Early U.S. History". After i'd gotten a taste of what this site has, i had great fun investigating all over the site. i've had the opportunity to stand in the library of congress on several occasions. the feeling is indescribable. this site isn't the library of congress, but it's pretty impressive. sorry this message is lengthy. i hope you enjoy the site. by the way, i have no personal or financial or any other kind of connection to the site i've described. i just thought it was a wonderful place to go and wanted to share it with everyone. have a nice day. julie thames howell, jax, fla surnames: THAMES and DUDLEY

    1. [NCROOTS] Fwd: NC Highlander "Oath of Allegiance"
    2. Dan Fairfax
    3. FYI -------- Original Message -------- Subject: NC Highlander "Oath of Allegiance" Date: Fri, 04 Feb 2000 09:52:21 -0700 From: "David L. Snow" <DLSNOW@worldnet.att.net> To: NCSCOTS-L@rootsweb.com A few years ago, while researching our immigrant McKenzie history and studying the Loyalist idealogy of the North Carolina Highlander immigrants and their reasons for supporting the English during the Revolutionary War, a disagreement developed over whether or not the NC Highlanders were required to 'take' a 'Blood Oath' . It has always been understood that the Highlanders had taken an Oath in support of the English after the Rebellion of 1745 in Scotland, but there was disagreement about them having to do the same for the Americans after their support of the English at Moore's Bridge [1775] in North Carolina, and the like, because there appeared to be no PRIMARY DOCUMENTATION in support of the Oath. I knew I had seen the Oath somewhere.....so Sam, you know what you can do with it......here is the reference. HIGHLANDERS OATH: In May of 1777 was passed by Act of Assembly in New Bern and Act know as the Act for the Security of the State. It required the taking of the Highlanders Oath. This is listed in the Cumberland County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. CUMBERLAND COUNTY [NC] COURT OF PLEAS AND QUARTER SESSIONS *Oath prescribed by Act of Assembly passed at Newbern, May 10th 1777, entitled an Act for the Security of the State. *The Highlander's Oath: I, do swear and as I shall answer to God at the great day of Judgment, I have not, nor shall have in my possession any gun, pistol or arm whatsoever, and never use tartan plaid of any other part of the Highland garb; and if I do so may I be cursed in my undertakings, family and property; may I never see my wife and children, father, mother, or relation; may I be killed in battle as a coward and lie without Christian burial, in a strange land, far from the graves of my forefathers and kindred. May all this come across me if I break my oath. Dave

    3. Thank you so very much! I don't know if that's my Charles CAMPBELL, which seems to be most of our research problem as there were lots of those, but I'll be more than happy to follow this up. My Charles CAMPBELL was b. circa 1730-1740 and his son, Levi CAMPBELL, was b. circa 1760-63 so if you see anything else I would really appreciate hearing. We suspect that the rest of the children are; Charles Jr, Robert, William, Laurany [b.1770], and Kiziah I really appreciate your assistance, Lisa -----Original Message----- From: Robert Keefer, Jr. [mailto:rkeeferjr@mediaone.net] Sent: Thursday, February 03, 2000 7:02 PM To: Lisa Grimes; NCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NCROOTS] Looking for CAMPBELL in NC Researchers Lisa and others.
