In my efforts to identify the location of my ancestor's land in Cumberland County, North Carolina I have purchased a deed mapping software program to plot parcel descriptions and identify adjacent property owners. My particular area of interest is Locks Creek (both Upper and Lower) which is on the east side of the Cape Fear River in Cumberland County, North Carolina. As a favor to those who can assist me with information about Locks Creek I will be happy to plot their ancestor's land, using this software program, if they will send me the metes and bounds property description of this land. I am only interested in the 1765-1800 time frame. With the metes and bounds description and any other property description found on the grant or deed please include the names of any adjacent property owners who may be mentioned (for instance-Davidson's line; John Maloy's corner; Gee's old line etc.). The plotted land will show the shape of the land parcel and will identify the corners and lines based on the metes and bounds descriptions provided. It will also show adjacent property owners when that information is furnished as part of the property description. The parcel outline will probably not show the exact location of the land on Locks Creek and its relationship to modern day Cumberland County, NC unless, by chance, that location can be deduced from the property description and the association of adjacent property owners and land parcels. However if enough people respond to this offer, the chances are good that I can show their ancestor's parcel of land in relationship to other adjacent property owners. This information may then lead me (or you) to discover the exact location of the land on Locks Creek. It will also be helpful to know if the land parcel is on Upper or Lower Locks Creek. And yes I am aware that many surveyors included parcel outlines as part of a deed or grant but often times it is not to scale or the acreage is misidentified. Once your land is plotted I will mail you a copy of the parcel outline so please provide your name and address as well as phone number if at all possible. Please don't expect a lot initially but as I assemble more Locks Creek property descriptions, from the 1765-1800 time frame, the location of most of these parcels will start coming into focus. Finally remember I am only interested in Locks Creek (Upper and Lower) property descriptions in Cumberland County, North Carolina from the 1765-1800 time frame. I can not plot your ancestors land parcel without an accurate metes and bounds description. If you are having trouble reading the grant or deed mail me a copy and I will try to interpret it for you. My address and phone number follow this message. Thank to all who may accept this offer. Working together we can all learn more about our ancestors who lived in this section of North Carolina. Also I am interested in any and all information on Locks Creek including canal projects undertaken in the early 19th century. I am also attempting to locate a detailed map which shows the whole course of Locks Creek. Doug Purcell 633 North Randolph Avenue Eufaula, AL 36027-1209 dpurcell@the-link.net or dpurcell@zebra.net

I am interested in learning more about Locks Creek in Cumberland County, NC where many of my ancestors lived in the last few decades of the eighteenth century. Of course there was Upper Locks Creek and Lower Locks Creek. Where did Upper Locks Creek separate from Lower Locks Creek? It is my understanding that in the early 19th century canal projects were begun which make it now difficult to plot the upper reaches of Locks Creek. Where were these canal projects located and when were they begun? I am especially interested in learning the location on Locks Creek of Beaver Dam Swamp or Turkey Perch Swamp, names that were apparently used interchangeably in the 1770 time frame. Does there now exist a good map of this part of Cumberland County (other than a USGS map) which shows Locks Creek in some detail? Thanks for any help offered with these questions. Janice Parton is making a list of *all* the cemeteries in Greene County, TN. Since Greene County once was part of North Carolina, I am sending this to NC lists, too. I'm sure the information Janice is kindly finding will help *many of us* in our search. Below, Janice gives a good list of some known cemeteries and burial sites. All of them need work - cleaning and documenting. If any of us knows of other Greene County TN burial places, or has info on them to share with Janice, she would love to hear from you! My humblest apologies to all on the list tonight. I was invaded just a few minutes before with a virus off the Clemmer-L list and before I could get it scanned and removed it was almost immediately passed on in the form of an attachment. I have two virus programs running and somehow one was disabled. I think grandchild did it last week and I did not know about it. AGAIN I sincerely apologize. My emails should be thoroughly clean now with no attachments. I have been to the McAfee Clinic and scanned PLUS have scanned twice with each program here. Joyce jreece@icx.net
You can search two major sites, Ancestry.com and Kindred Konnections, from this page: http://members.aol.com/birthmom2/ancestor.htm You get some info from the searches, but to get more you have to subscribe, though Ancestry is running some kind of Valentine's special and Kindred you can get a cheap 10 day subscription and grab all the info you can within that 10 days :) Good luck Kathy ----- Firstmoms Genealogy Resources-North Carolina Firstmom's Genealogy Researcher's List
