    1. [NCROOTS] John Porter
    2. Afternoon Everyone, I am looking for a little bit of help Please. Has anyone heard of John Porter in the Chowan County area. According to a article by Dr. Claiborne Smith Porter of Lower Norfolk County, Virginia and North Carolina. A deposition that was made in North Carolina, he ( John Porter ) was decribed in the North Carolina records as a "Known Villain, the son of a Quaker" This article also mention that John Porter made a deed in Princess Anne 12-21-1695 as John Porter Jr. of Chowan in North Carolina attorney for John Porter Sr. Again, Dec 15 1695 as John Porter Jr of Chowan he sold land on back bay to James Kemp It is possible ( from the article at have )that this Porter line is connected to the " Lillington " " Pilkington " lines Any information would be very helpful with this Porter Family. Thank you all for your time Regards, Patti

    1. [NCROOTS] Revolutionary Army Accounts for North Carolina
    2. Although there are probably a niumber of published sources for North Carolina Revolutionary soldiers, probably the most reliable are the series transcribed and compiled by Weynette Parks Haun of Durham, NC. I do not have her address, and I am not a salesman for her. If anyone has tried to read the films of these accounts, you will know what a great big favor has been done for genealogists and lineage researchers by Mrs. Haun. I have tried to read the film at the DAR Library in Washington, DC, and they are hard to tackle. Mrs. Haun has indexed each book--I don't know how many vlolumes there are--I only own two. These are government account books and are not meant to help you compose your pedigree. They were kept for the government and do not give a great deal of detail. The preface of Mrs. Haun's books helps you understand that the accounts were paid at different locales. By determining where your ancestor lived, you can generally figure out who the paymaster was. These books are about some of the most authentic I have seen for Revolutionary War activities in NC, however. If you find your person listed, you can be assured that if he were paid, he probably served. Another source for determining whether there was Rev. War service was the awarding of bounty land in Tennessee. Several volumes of such awards have been published. A recent one of bounty land grants awarded by various state governements for Rev War service has been compiled by Lloyd D. Bockstruck and was published by Geneal. Publ. Co. Some libraries have this book--read the preface carefully. Mostlythose states had extra land awarded these warrants. And that's all I have to say on the matter. Perhaps others will join this discussion. E.W.Wallace who has many NC roots

    1. RE: [NCROOTS] Am Rev War Roster for NC?
    2. Marsha McWilliams
    3. Lisa, I found, in my local library, U. S. MILITARY RECORDS, A Guide to Federal and State Sources, Colonial America to the Present, by James C. Neagles. On pg. 309 (North Carolina), American Revolution (1775-83), it has some listings that are, apparently, not taken from the pension applications. Some records mentioned are: Rev. War Papers. A card index that contains data gathered from various sources. Cards provide individual's name, unit and misc. data; Rev. War Final Settlements. A finding aid to this collection lists records in the office of the state treasurer and comptroller. Alphabetically lists names and counties of those who received final pay... there are more listings (other than in regards to pensions, the way I read it.) This definitely indicates that these can be found at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh. Hope this helps. 3. Question to the List Does anyone have any idea if there has ever been a list published, in regard to those who served during the Am Rev War, from the many counties of NC? Not just those who filed for pensions, because it's my understanding, that not all of those that served . . . ever lived long enough to file. My own family history states; "never filed for pension is his lifetime". I know that there's such a published list for those who served, and later resided [with descendents] in LA, but I think it was created only from those that actually made the effort to file. I know that was the case for the War of 1812. Thinking that NC may have had something published like this, and/or might even be part of the source for this later roster publication, is why I'm asking. My reason for following this idea is that I have several men who were of the appropriate age to serve but nothing has ever come down to us has concretely proved their activity during this time frame. Many thanks for helping with such a vague question, and maybe the answer will help someone else who hasn't started to look in that direction . . . 1. [NCROOTS] Migrations database for NCGenWeb
    2. Elizabeth Harris
    3. Marceline Beem, who did marriage and tombstone inscription databases for the NCGenWeb project, has now created a database to track migration of families into and out of North Carolina. The idea is to document the last known date that a person or family was in a particular state before coming to NC together with the earliest known date that they are known to be in a particular NC county, or conversely the last date they were in NC and the first date they can be identified somewhere else. North Carolina was a transitional state for many families who ended up elsewhere in the U.S. It was settled mostly from the north, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania in particular. Families came in and settled the land, and then as available land filled up and descendants increased in number, some moved on further south and west. Once the database begins to grow, I expect that we will be able to see clear patterns of families coming from a particular location to a specific NC county, then moving on in groups to other states. We've gone through some beta testing, and we are now ready to start incorporating real data. The site is at http://tn-3.rootsweb.com/~ncarolina/migrations.shtml and it works in much the same way that the marriage and tombstone databases do. Please drop by.
