Some time ago a gentleman named Garland Stout (who is now deceased I understand), of Greensboro, NC, produced a North Carolina historical map series. He produced large historical maps of each North Carolina county and offered them for sale to interested genealogists, historians and others. Are these maps still being offered for sale? If so would someone please provide me with the name of the business offering the maps and their mailing address and/or phone number and e-mail address? I am interested in obtaining maps of Cumberland and Robeson Counties. Thanks in advance for any answers to this query. Hello All; My name is Tom Lightfoot and I am looking for the parents of my GGrandfather Julius C. Lightfoot. He and his older brother John say they were born in N.C.. Julius born c 1803 and John c 1799. I have a good record of Julius and family from 1835-36, but nothing before then. Julius married in Georgia 1835 to a Stephens but to an Elizebeth Frazer in 1836, he has a girl child and has moved to Miss. There is a trail from Georgia to Alabama, to Miss. Any help would be most appreciated. I thank you one and all Tom Lightfoot

Belle, Do you happen to have any information on the Michael SWAIM (b: ca. 1786) who married Priscilla SHERWOOD (b: 3/17/1787, Guilford Co, NC, dau. of Daniel Sherwood & Frances Linthicum)? They married in Guilford on Feb. 24, 1804. This Michael Swaim was possibly the brother of William SWAIM (son of John Swaim & Elizabeth Vickery) who md: Elizabeth Sherwood on 12/17/1789, Guilford Co. There was a Michael Swaim who lived 'next door' to my ancestor, John Pavey, on the Guilford Co, NC census and I've been trying to find some information about him for quite a while. The Michael Swaim (above) would have been only 14 yrs old in 1800. However, the Paveys and the Sherwoods were known comrads previous to their NC move (from Caroline Co, MD), and then (by 1820), are found in Washington Co, IN. Thanks. Hello list, Sorry to intrude, but I am excited! I just added a researcher to my page that is available to help those of you that had ancestors in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. I know this is a NC list, but many of our ancestors landed in New England and stayed a while before moving on to other nearby states. And she has access to such great resources, so I thought she might be able to help someone out there. She has access to so many great resources out there, like town halls, courthouses, genealogical libraries, archives and societies, and I think she would be of great help on some of your brick walls! She can also get records for you, and certify them for your applications to such organizations as DAR and Mayflower Society. To read more about her and what she might be able to help you with, go to: http://members.tripod.com/~KHuish/research.html or if you can click in email: <A HREF="http://members.tripod.com/~KHuish/research.html">Firstmom's Genealogy Researcher's List</A> Scroll down to "NEW ENGLAND" It's a list of researcher's from Alabama to Maryland to Scotland, and lots of locations in between, all available to assist you in your hunt for ancestors. Some specialize in ship passenger lists or census, and some do photographs of tombstones and old buildings (gggrandpa's house still standing?? Wanna SEE it?). More are being added frequently so you may want to bookmark the site for when you get deeper into your research, and as you come to brick walls in other states. And feel free to pass this link on to other's who might find it useful! Good luck and happy hunting! Kathy

Hello List, I would like to Thank everyone for the help on my John Porter of Chowan County, North Carolina. All information was a big help. With so many John Porter's running around, it is a little hard to try and keep them all in order. But I THINK I now have all the John's from Lower Norfolk County, Princess Anne County, Virginia and Chowan County, North Carolina account for ( I hope so anyhow ). Now to find their next generation. >From some deeds abstract that I have found in Princess Anne County, Virginia this John Porter and John Porter Jr. Are the same people in Chowan County, North Carolina I would like your opinion on what route you would believe they would had taken from Princess Anne County, Virginia to Chowan County, North Carolina. One of my mother cousins and I do not agree on this route she believe they would have come from Isle of Wright County Virginia orginally, to Norfolk, VA to Cape Fear, NC. to Chowan County, NC and finally settle in Halifax County, NC. My heart tells me that with all the helps you all have given me that I am close to connecting Samuel Porter of Halifax County, North Carolina to the Chowan County Porter's Again Thank You all for the help you have so kindlly given me these pass couple of days. Regards, Patti

This appeared in the Gaston section of the Charlotte Observer. It is a real nice article. Please everyone get those stories submitted as space in the book is limited. Neal Published Sunday, February 13, 2000 Heritage book to recount history of Gaston County By LEIGH PRESSLEY Special Correspondent DALLAS -- Folks interested in local history and tracing family trees have been invited to submit stories for a new Gaston County history book. "The Gaston County Heritage Book," which will be published later this year, will print stories up to 500 words and one photo each from families, churches, clubs, organizations, neighborhoods and other groups. "It's a compilation of everyone's stories in the community, a combination of family history and local history," says Kathy Haynes, a member of the Dallas-based Gaston County Heritage Book Committee. "It's pretty common in the genealogy world." Haynes and several other members of the Heritage Book Committee also worked on a 400-page Lincoln County book in 1997. Published by Paul Dellinger of Lincolnton, the book will sell for $45 plus $4.95 postage. A copy will also be placed in the N.C. Room of the Gaston County Public Library. Local contributors can look to "The Lincoln County Heritage Book," also in the N.C. rooms of the Gaston and Lincoln libraries, for an idea of typical stories, Haynes says. Some folks wrote about family history and ancestor lineage; others told stories about how their forefathers lived. "We got stories of families tracing back to the German, English and Scots-Irish settlers," Haynes says. "Some gave their family trees; some told stories about Uncle Joe opening a grocery business." Others focused on the Battle of Ramseur's Mill, the Old Tryon Courthouse and the rumored story that Abraham Lincoln's mother visited Lincoln County before her famous son's birth. Heritage Book Committee members also want to know the reasons people ended up in Gaston County. "If they came during the boom time of the mills, why did they come?" Haynes says. "Did they come for a job? Did they come for other reasons? Did they just move here during this generation? We want to know why they're here, why they like it and all about their roots." Fellow committee member Max Robinson will compile historical stories such as the Loray Mill strike. "It can be anything other than family articles," Robinson says. "It could be information on churches, civic clubs or any organization such as the chamber of commerce. We also want information on businesses that used to be around, maybe ones in which the old building has been torn down. "Even if a person remembers a story of years ago that they want to relate - like the flood of 1916, for instance." Some stories could be more recent, such as the devastation brought on by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Committee members also want stories on individual towns in Gaston County, including Belmont, Cramerton, Mount Holly, McAdenville and Ranlo. "There are a lot of stories in all these towns," says Robinson, a Belmont resident. "We have a community here called East Belmont that has a story of its own. When I was a kid, everybody called it East End and everyone thought it was one word. Actually, it meant the east end of Belmont." Of 100 N.C. counties, Robinson says, around 35 have compiled heritage books. "They're really popular," he says. "They're great for people doing research on families, and they just make for interesting reading. It's neat to think that our descendants can go to the library 100 years from now and find what we have written about our history. That's what it's all about." - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Want to Contribute? The Gaston County Heritage Book Committee is accepting family history articles for its upcoming book. Stories of 500 words and one photo will be printed at no charge. The committee also is accepting histories of the same length from churches, clubs, organizations and communities. Extra space is available for 10 cents per word and $12.50 per photo. Deadline is Sept. 1. Book orders are also being taken. Cost is $45 plus $4.95 postage, if mailed. Send family histories and book orders to the Gaston County Heritage Book Committee, P.O. Box 995, Dallas, NC 28034. Send stories via e-mail to: heritage2000@hotmail.com or ostrich@bellsouth.net. I am the new listowner of the BEARDSLEY mailing list, and I would like to invite all of the BEARDSLEY (and alternate spellings) researchers on the North Carolina Roots list to subscribe. We have been having some great discussions, and many family connections have been made. To subscribe: Send an e-mail to BEARDSLEY-L-request@rootsweb.com, leave the subject line blank, in the body of the message type only one word....subscribe. To subscribe to the digest version (several messages combined on one e-mail), send to BEARDSLEY-D-request@rootsweb.com. I hope that you will join us, and will post your BEARDSLEY family data on the list, where it will be seen by other BEARDSLEY researchers, and will become a permanent part of the searchable archives.
