MARVEL WILKINSON/WILKERSON ca 1810-ca 1858 I am searching for any information pertaining to Marvel Wlikinson/Wilkerson. I believe that he may have came from either Hyde County or Beaufort County, NC. He had at least three other siblings that we are aware of, Noah Hampton, David and Margarete. We believe his mother was Ann (Nolan). Marvel left NC, we think, and travel through Kentucky and Tennessee and then married Eveline Bradley in Galletin Co, IL. We have been search for any information about his ancestors now for several years, but have come with nothing. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Ms. Sarah Gudger was born enslaved in Asheville, NC, in 1816. From what I have read, she lived to be 121 years old. Her father was Smart Gudger. I don't yet know if this Gudger family was related to mine. My oldest known African American Gudger ancestor was NOAH Gudger, enumerated in the 1870 Buncombe County census. The original, first-person slave narrative below is one of *many* available for a few days - for free - on the ancestry.com website below: Marian Douglas, Gudger descendant http://ancestry.com/search/rectype/biohist/slavnarr/promo.htm ........................... text from WPA records on the ancestry.com website.... Investigation of the almost incredible claim of Aunt Sarah Gudger, ex-slave living in Asheville, that she was born on Sept. 15, 1816, discloses some factual information corroborating her statements. Aunt Sarah's father, SMART Gudger, belonged to and took his family name from JOE Gudger, who lived near Oteen, about six miles east of Asheville in the Swannanoa valley, prior to the War Between the States. Family records show that Joe Gudger married a Miss McRae in 1817, and that while in a despondent mood he ended his own life by hanging, as vividly recounted by the former slave. JOHN HEMPHILL, member of the family served by Aunt Sarah until "freedom", is recalled as being "a few y'ars younge' as me", and indeed his birth is recorded for 1822. ALEXANDER Hemphill, mentioned by Aunt Sarah as having left to join the Confederate army when about 25 years of age, is authentic and his approximate age in 1861 tallies with that recalled by the ex-slave. When Alexander went off to the war Aunt Sarah was "gettin' t' be an ol' woman." Aunt Sarah lives with distant cousins in a two-story frame house, comfortably furnished, at 8 Dalton street in South Asheville (the Negro section lying north of Kenilworth). A distant made relative, 72 years of age, said he has known Aunt Sarah all his life and that she was an old woman when he was a small boy. (#2) Small in stature, about five feet tall, Aunt Sarah is rathered rounded in face and body. Her milk-chocolate face is surmounted by short, sparse hair, almost milk white. She is somewhat deaf but understands questions asked her, responding with animation. She walks with one crutch, being lame in the right leg. On events of the long ago her mind is quite clear. Recalling the Confederate "sojers, marchin', marchin'" to the drums, she beat a tempo on the floor with her crutch. As she described how the hands of slaves were tied before they were whipped for infractions she crossed her wrists. OWEN GUDGER, Asheville postmaster (1913-21), member of the Buncombe County Historical Association, now engaged in the real estate business, says he has been acquainted with Aunt Sarah all his life; that he has, on several occasions, talked to her about her age and early associations, and that her responses concerning members of the Gudger and Hemphill families coincide with known facts of the two families. Interviewed by a member of the Federal Writers' Project, Aunt Sarah seemed eager to talk, and needed but little prompting. (SARAH GUDGER, (born 15 Sep 1816), Interview with Mrs. MARJORIE JONES, 5 May, 1937) I wah bo'n 'bout two mile fum Ole Fo't on de Ole Mo'ganton Road. I sho' has had a ha'd life. Jes wok, an' wok, an' wok. I nebbah know nothin' but wok. Mah boss he wah Ole Man Andy Hemphill. He had a la'ge plantation in de valley. Plenty ob ebbathin'. All kine ob stock: hawgs, cows, mules, an' hosses. When Marse Andy die I go lib wif he son, William Hemphill. [Ms. Gudger's narrative continues on ancestry.com website]

I am trying to locate the date of death for my great-great grandparents, John and Sarah D. McFarland in Guilford County. They were on the 1850 census but I do not know if they were on the 1860 Guilford County census. I would appreciate any assistance in finding out the date and location of their deaths. Conni in Ohio
CHARLES WILLIAMS (ca 1735?-CA 1819 Granville Co., NC) WIR00325 Charles Williams is one of the four known sons of John Williams, Sr. of colonial Granville Co., NC, formerly of Goochland Co., VA. The VA county is his probable birthplace. Some of the Williams family genealogy is to be found in by Alvahn Holmes in SOME FARRAR'S ISLAND DESCENDANTS. (SLC film 1,033,635. A copy of the book is in Virginia State Library and in DAR Library, Washington.) Charles died in Granville Co. before 27 Aug 1819, as indicated in a Raleigh newspaper: "D. Lately, in Granville [county], Mr. Charles Williams, an old and respectable inhabitant of that county. RaNCSw Fri 27 Aug 1819 3:3." (Lois Smathers Neal, ABSTRACTS OF VITAL RECORDS FROM RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA NEWSPAPERS, 1820-1829. V. II, p. 536) Goochland Co. Records Father John Williams II (adm. bond filed by two sons Jan 1770, Granville Co.) and his two younger sons, Charles and Nathaniel (qv) removed to Granville Co., NC ca. 1750, probably from Goochland Co., as Charles appears on the 1747 list of Goochland Co., VA, tithables, along with brother Nathaniel, both in the household of father John Williams. This would indicate he was at least 16 years of age, the age at which he would have been eligible for militia duty. Again, refer to biography of John Williams II of Goochland Co. (Mrs. W. M. Sweeny, "Goochland County Tithables, 1747, 1751," VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST, V. 6, No. 1 (Jan-Mar 1962) Granville Co. NC Records Charles is on Granville Co., NC tax list of 1755, and is designated "s. of John". Therefore, he was a brother of John Williams, Esq. (d. 1799), of William Williams (d. 1775), and also of Nathaniel Williams, also designated on the same tax list as "s. of John." Also, on 1762 tax list for Granville Co. in Ragland District taken by John Williams, Jr. is this listing: "John Williams & son Charles, Thomas Davis, Pleasant Hicks, Abraham," total of 4 whites, 1 black, 5 total, 1 black over 16. (Ransom McBride & Jo Anna B. McDaniel, "List of Taxables for 1762 in Granville Co., NC," NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY JOURNAL, May 1987, pp. 100 ff.) The identities of Thomas Davis and Pleasant Hicks are unknown. However, a neighbor of the Williams family in Goochland Co. was one Daniel Hix of Goochland and probably Brunswick Cos., VA. Pleasant Hicks is probably not a son but possibly a relative of Daniel Hix, a neighbor of John Williams I in Goochland Co. before Williams removed to Hanover Co. in the 1730s. (No sons but only two daughters and a wife named in will of Daniel Hix of Goochland Co.) Charles Wiliams appears on the tax list of Reuben Searcy, Granville Co. of 1764-65. In 1761, Charles Williams received a patent in Granville Co. [Patent Bk 14] [no.] 2822, pg 100 ["Lord Granville to"] Charles Williams 24 Jul 1761. 700 acres in Granville Co. on both sides of Crooked run, joining Vincent Bodine OR [Original record] /s/ Chas. Williams. Wits. -- Bullock, Thos Lowe surveyed 29 Aug 1760 SCC: Thos David, Chas. Williams. Thos Person, surveyor. (Margaret M. Hofmann, THE GRANVILLE DISTRICT OF NORTH CAROLINA, 1748-1763, V. 2, p. 161). (Question: Is Thos. David, one of the chain carriers, the same as Thomas Davis listed among the the tithables in cited Goochland Co. taxable list?) To be continued Does anyone have anything to contribute on this man and his family? Evelyn W. Wallace a descendant of Charles's brother William Williams

While reading microfilm copies of the Daily Advocate, Belleville, St. Clair county, Illinois I came across these related articles and since the mother was born in Orange county, North Carolina, thought they may of help to someone on this list. It is not a line I am working on. Nancy Giles Mrs. Ira Smith, Wife of Pastor, Dies At Marissa Mrs. Elizabeth Euphelia Smith, 72, wife of Rev. Ira J. Smith, pastor of the Baptist church in Marissa, died at 9:20 last night in the parsonage, her death resulting from a fall in which she fractured her skull. On October 15 last Mrs. Smith fell on the basement stairway of her home after her return from church and the following morning was taken to a hospital in Vandalia, where x-ray pictures revealed that she had suffered skull fracture. She remained in the hospital a month and returned to her home, where her condition became critical a week ago. Mrs. Smith, nee Smith, was a daughter of the late James Henry and Caroline Martin Smith, both natives of North Carolina. She was born in Rockingham county, N. C., Aug. 27, 1872, and was married to Rev. Ira J. Smith, Aug. 24, 1902, in Bond county, Ill. Besides her husband she leaves two sons, Houston, J., Vandalia; and Jesse E., Yates City, Ill.; one grandchild and a brother, W. R. Smith, Mulberry Grove, Ill. She was a member of the Baptist church, Marissa and of the Missionary Society of the church. The body is at the Finger and Son funeral home, Marissa, where friends may call until 10 o'clock tomorrow night. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in Pleasant Mount Baptist church, near Mulberry Grove, Bond county, with burial in Noffsinger cemetery. Dr. A. P. Smith, of Carbondale, a nephew of the deceased, will conduct the funeral service. The Daily Advocate, Belleville, IL 30 Nov 1944

OOPS! Very important correction. The year of marriage for Samuel Avera and Zilpha Ingram was 1779 and not 1799. Franklin Ingram
I continue to insist that William Avera, Testator of 1795, was not the son of Thomas Avera, Sr., Testator of 1761. Both original Wills survive among the Johnston Co NC records housed in the NC Archives. I have presented evidence for my claim That they were not father and son in other documents. In this brief document I will cast considerable doubt on the related claim that William Avera, Testator of 1795, was the father of the Samuel Avera who married Zilpha Ingram the daughter of Richard Ingram, Testator of 1780. His original Will also survives. In fact, Thomas Avera, Sr., 1761, was the father of this Samuel Avera. My reasoning is as follows: Aventon Avera, Sr was born between 1771 and 1775 and therefore was between 74 and 78 years of age when he died in 1849. His surviving children were: Aventon Avera, Jr., Rachel Avera married to Bryant Harper, and Polly Avera married to Reddick Adams. The Will of William Avera, Testator of 1795, Johnston Co NC clearly documents that Rachel was William Avera's surviving Widow and that Aventon Avera was his son. This Will also establishes that William had a son named Samuel. The Loose Estate Record for Averton (sic) Avera, Sr, Johnston Co NC, clearly documents his year of death as 1849 and names his surviving son and two daughters and the daughter's spouses. >From the Census, we fix Aventon's years of birth between 1771 and 1775. In the 1820 Johnston Co NC Census he was enumerated as being at least 45. Because he was at least 45 in 1820, he had to have been born by 1775. He was enumerated in the 1840 Johnston Co NC Census as being at least 60 and under 70. Because he was he not yet 70 in 1740, he had to have been born in 1771 or later. This brackets his possible years of birth between 1771 and 1775. It is widely claimed in erroneous descendancy charts that Aventon Avera was born about 1766 and is the older brother of the Samuel Avera who married Zilpha Ingram, daughter of Richard Ingram, Testator of 1780. However, a Marriage Bond in Johnston Co NC (12 Feb 1799) clearly fixed the year of marriage between Samuel Avera and Zilpha Ingram as 1799. The 1781 Will of Richard Ingram confirms that this marriage did take place. It is clearly impossible that Aventon Avera could be the older brother of the Samuel Avera who married Zilpha Ingram in 1779. Aventon could have been no more than 8 years old in 1779. It is also improbable that this Samuel Avera was the brother of Aventon Avera at all. On the other hand, there is considerable circumstantial evidence that the Samuel Avera who married Zilpha Ingram was in fact the son of Thomas Avera, Sr., Testator of 1761 in Johnston Co NC. Franklin Ingram, Raleigh, NC
