Hi, A lurker on this list for quite awhile. Have been reading with interest this most recent information. All indications are that my husband's GM had two children out of wedlock. Census records indicate that they were raised by GP's. A recent connection with third cousins of my husband noted that they remembered the two children and that "Jane" had the children however, she was 'ran off' by her parents. Jane's Father was a Methodist minister in Gastonia. The time frame would be circa 1900- 1910 at the latest. Where would i go to find out if by some chance bonds were posted for both of these children? The surname is ARROWOOD Mother of children "Mary Jane" aka Jane Father known only as "Davis", primarily for my husband's Father. Not sure if this is a given name or surname. Raised by WEZLIA/WESLEY ARROWOOD and ISABEL (CORRELL or a variation of) ARROWOOD of Gastonia NC. "Jane" supposedly married. Unknown where, to whom or when and had a daughter. Her name was LOLA. Searching for the family of William A Morris b. ca 1796 somewhere in NC. He married a Lucinda ? b. 1800 VA and migrated to KY. They show up in Warren County Ky where their first child John B. Morris was born ca 1825. Other Children: Elijah C, Sampson, Pedora (Dora) and Frances Agnes(Adeline). About 1830 they lived in Posey County, Indiana until William died in 1851. I think this is my last question about the Bastardy bonds... Or maybe it is just an observation. From the transcribed documents that went by, I saw that the amount of the bond was $200. First of all, I believe $200 was a whole lot of money in the 1800's. Did they pay the full $200, or was it secured by a small down payment like jail bonds are, or was it secured like a mortgage or what? Thank you all for answering the questions for me. :) deb

Unwed mothers existed then as now and probably always will. As I understand the concept of 'Bastardy Bonds", it was a way for the state to see that the child was cared for. I do not believe that it was meant to brand the mother in any way. In researching genealogy in a time when records were sometimes sparce and often destroyed before our time, Bastardy Bonds provide a source of information. While true, they may not name the father, they often would name persons that thought enough about the mother and her child to help guarantee the child's upbringing. Sometimes this could be relatives of the mother. I have seen numerous times where a name would appear that would seem to connect to a name I was researching. The link usually gave no proof of connection, but it was a lead in my continuing research. Just an opinion. If a woman had a child out of wedlock in NC she was required to name the father so that he would support the child. If she chose not to (in court) then she had to name 3 men who would help pay for the childs needs. Sometimes one of those 3 men might be the father. A note about the book on NC bonds. It was determined not to print any bonds less then 70 years old so as not to embarrass the living. (The book was printed in the early 1900's.) Different states have different rules. In Tennessee the bastard records are kept in the general court session records - not separately like in NC. Lynda

It seems to me she's already appeared in court about it ... it wouldn't be a secret... My family roots have been, up to this time, primarily in California, but include some other western states. I've just never heard of such a thing!
