Lora, you can likely obtain information from the government on the Marine who was stationed in the area. Be forewarned however - it can take a long time to receive these records and they are only available to immediate relatives. If your Marine is not deceased, you will need permission of the Marine to obtain his/her records. For example, I was able to obtain my father's records. But when I requested my uncle's records, I was denied. This web site can tell you more about obtaining these records. http://www.nara.gov/regional/mpr.html Carla ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 06, 2001 9:20 AM Subject: Re: [NCROOTS] Need help with a County/ Reply > Greetings, > > Here is the Obit I needed help on. YES, thats absolutely correct. Except "Tarawa Terrace" is the correct spelling rather than "Tarawana Terrace ". It was named after the Marine's invasion of Tawara in 1943. You can read more about it at http://www.geocities.com/stu_hill/Tarawa.htm. Hi Carla, The USGS GNIS web site shows a Tarawana Terrace Elementary School, Tarawa Terrace I (subdivision), Tarawa Terrace II (subdivision) and Lejeune High School. They're all in Onslow County, NC. I am really having problems on finding an obituary on this Oates. I would appreciateany help on him if possible. Parham Yarboro Oates(Oats) b. 17 Feb. 1817 Bear Creek, Chatham County, North Carolina m. between 1848and May 2, 1849 His wife was Nancy Stewart, She was from NC also... She was the daughter of John Stewart and Dianna Riddle Stewart.. Parham Was paralyzed,,,, not sure if from the war or something else. Haven't been able to find anything other than the 1860 and 70 census of Moore county, NC. I want to know if and where he died and is buried.... He was the 5th child of John Yarboro Oates and wife Sarah Fellows Oates.. Hope there is someone that can help with an obituary or a Will. Thanks, Allene My e-mail address is < [email protected] > me.
I have a book that is issued by Fort Bragg, NC that lists the cemeteries that are inside the military compound. The military maintains these small cemeteries and keeps track of who is there. I found that most all the military reservations do this as I got a book from Ft Gordon, GA too. These books are not charged for. They have a certain group of people that this is their MOS(job), taking care of the cemeteries. You wouldn't believe how many are buried inside the forts. If anyone wants a lookup of someone who may have died, many years ago, before Fort Bragg was installed, let me know and I'll see what I can find for you. Margaret There is only one other alternative to getting older, and I'm not ready for that yet. I'm too busy diggin my roots and searching for more limbs to my tree. Diggin for Stewart, McConnell, Inglis, Herring, MacFarlane, Jones, and others on paternal side, Addison,Wright,Newell,McDaniel,Foster,Renfro on maternal side and others. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

>Will someone tell me the records that exist for >Halifax County and how early. I am searching for records about 1743. >Thank you. Gayle > Halifax was formed in 1758 from Edgecombe County, but some earlier records are filed there. George Schweitzer's guidebook list the following that predate the county: bonds of apprentices 1722-1855 deeds 1732-1934 From 1741 to 1758, what is now Halifax was part of Edgecombe. Edgecombe county records extant for the 1741-1758 period include some court records, estate records, miscellaneous land records, and wills from 1750. On the 1840 Lincoln County, NC census, page 112 I find my great great great grandfather Alford Childers. The index says Alfred Childers, but the actual census says Alford Childers. Alford is listed as being under 30 years old, as is his wife, Emley M. Herrington Childers. There is also listed a male child under the age of 5, which is Alford Maloy Childers, and a female child under the age of 5, whom I know nothing about. On the 1860 Lamar County, TX census I find Alford Maloy Childers, but no sister. Next door to Alford Maloy Childers is listed a G. W. Childers from Georgia. Where were these people between 1840 and 1860 ? Alford Maloy Childers married Lucinda Osborne who was from Tennessee. Were they all in route from NC to Texas via Georgia where they picked up a relative named G.W. Childers, or in Tennessee where he met Lucinda, or in both places, or just wandering around ? I don't suppose you have a Childers female married to someone unknown to me whose parents were Alford and Emley M. Herrington Childers, who was born in NC between 1835 and 1840? Does any of this information ring a bell for anyone ? Jack Childers in OKC International Society of BlackSheep Genealogists http://www.gbnf.com/genealogy/childers/html/surnames.htm

---------- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Viet Nam dogtags Date: Mon, Aug 6, 2001, 1:39 AM Hello, I am passing this on from another list. Possibly some of you could benefit from this site. Best of luck. Bob Trapp On a recent "Today Show" there was a story about two men who went to Hanoi on a business trip. The men encountered a guy selling old GI dog tags from US servicemen who were killed during the Viet Nam War. They were disgusted by the thought of this man profiting from the sale of these tags. Upon returning to the U.S., they decided to go back to Viet Nam and purchase ALL the dog tags. They did so, paying 19 cents per tag! They brought home several hundred tags. The plan is to return the tags to surviving family members, when they can find them. The process has already begun with one set being turned over to a grieving Mom on July 4th, (coincidentally, it was on her birthday)! These two men have set up a website, "http://www.founddogtags.com" listing the names of all those whose tags they purchased. If you lost friends, family, or know of someone who lost a loved one in Viet Nam, I suggest you check out this website. If you recognize a name, there's an e-mail address to contact these two men and to help in their efforts to return the dogtag to its rightful survivor. I'm sure a family member would be eternally grateful to have such an important item returned. Please help by checking this website. Please send the website address to everyone you know. The more people who see the lists, the greater the chance of returning ALL the tags to those who lost loved ones in Viet Nam! ============================== Create a FREE family website at MyFamily.com! http://www.myfamily.com/banner.asp?ID=RWLIST2
I do know that Tarawa Terrace, at one time, had its own post office and zip code. I lived there for a time when my father was stationed at Camp Lejeune. Camp Lejeune, while not a town or city, also carried its own post office and zip code. Carla ----- Original Message ----- From: "W. O. I don't think Camp Lejeune is listed as a city or town. It is a U.S. Marine base name, in the city of Jacksonville, N. C. in Onslow county. But I think that is is correct that Tarawa Terrace is a location on the base. A military housing complex. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carla Townsend" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 05, 2001 4:20 PM Subject: Re: [NCROOTS] Need help with a County > I bet this is probably Tarawa Terrace.
