Subject: CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS AND SAILORS SYSTEM**ALL WADES IN CIVIL WAR LISTED hi everyone, i found this site, i thought maybe it might help someone, it has links to cemeteries, battles, soldiers, sailors, prisoners, medals of honor, regiments and national parks. when i pulled up the soldiers search page, i had great success when i put in the last name in the last name field and left the first name and state empty and it searched the entire u.s. it pulled up 559 wades that were in the civil war, what state they were from and regiment they were in and which side they were on and what they did, such as infantry or calvary. very good site! june http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html

I'm still researching the Harllee/Harlee/Harley Families in Robeson County, NC as well Dillon County, SC; Marion County, SC; Scotland County, NC; Bladen County, NC and possibly Cumberland County, NC. If you have any ties to this family please contact me. This family is also connected to Bethea, Page/Paige, Carmichael, Taylor, Buie and Townsend. Christina Page Granddaughter of Mable Harlee Carmichael (1924-2001) of Elrod, NC and James A. Page (1922-1993) of Fairmont, NC P.S. I have a number of pictures of folks from these areas but absolutely no ID. Some of them pictures were taken in Philadelphia, PA; Wheeling, WV; and other places. If your family lived in this area during the time period of 1900-1960, please let me know. Maybe I can get an ID on these pics and send copies off to their families.....
On the 1820 NC Census, Andrew Lawing, Jr. is shown with 3 male children under the age of ten, whom researchers have identified, plus two female children under the age of ten, whom no one has identified, at least to my knowledge. If anyone reading this post is descended from a daughter of Andrew Jr. I would appreciate hearing from you. I know that Nancy L. was born 1842 and Mary A.E. was born 1843, but they obviously aren't the ones on the 1820 Census. Appreciate any help with this. The mother of the children on the 1820 Census was Elizabeth Phillips, and this was in Mecklenburg County. Again, thanks. Doris in Texas
The following abstract is from Wayne County. Except for the way it's worded, how exactly would it differ from a will? #1098, Deed book 5, page 43 Avah Ruffin, deed of gift to her niece, Betsey Bloodworth, daughter of William Bloodworth and Milley, his wife, Nov 17, 1790, for love and affection, four negroes named George, Agga, Penny and Core, live-stock, and furnitue, the deed to take effect after the death of saaaid Avah Ruffin. Wit Joel Gurley, Noah Pitman. I would also welcome any response from Ruffin researchers in Colonial Edgecombe County, NC Thanks, John Ottinger
On a recent trip to Savannah, GA, I happened upon a grave of a Confederate soldier from the NC, born in Kenansville, NC. It was of Austin W. WINDERS, Co "E", 20th Regiment, NC Volunteers, 1844-1924. It is located in Laurel Grove Cemetery, North Division, Savannah, GA. There is a grave of a Margaret ?? (1836-1908) also buried there, and a P. Frederick WINDERS (1838-1896) as well, but not sure if Margaret is the wife of Austin Sr., or P. Frederick. The final grave is of a Jas. K. WINDERS, DOD 1-21-1909, aged 39 yrs. His son is also buried there and his name was Austin W. WINDERS, M.D., Savannah, GA, b. 7-11-1878 and d. 4-9-1926. Have taken a photo of the grave of Austin Sr., but do not have it (or others) scanned in as yet. But, anyone needing information on this person for your records, home this helps. Many military bases have cemeteries on them as a result of their taking of land to create the base years ago. Before the base was created by Congress, there were probably dozens of family cemeteries and possibly other single graves on what it now Ft. Bragg. The military is required to take perpetual care of them as they would ball fields, yards, etc. The Public Information office on the base can probably give you information on someone that has indexed the cemeteries, or you might contact the Cumberland County Genealogical Society to see if they have a reference. As a follow up to this post, anyone looking for an index to the cemeteries for Ft. Stewart Army base (just below Savannah, GA and home of the 3rd Armored Division that fought in Desert Storm), Mr. Wyman May has published a book on them and it costs $15.00, plus $2.00 postage. His address to send your check is: P. O. BOX 523, Hinesville, GA 31310 BTW, Ft. Stewart (which covers 5 counties in GA) offers a tour of the cemeteries at least once a year and sometimes twice a year for people who may have ancestors buried there. My understanding is there are 13 cemeteries on the base and the next tour will be in November, 2001. Contact Mr. May and he can put your name down on the list to take the tour. How does one order these free books? I don't think AF Bases have cemeteries.
