Could someone be so kind as to do a lookup for me in Cumberland County, NC if they have the means to find if there are any divorces between Hi(y)ram Wright and any of his 3 wives, all apparently sisters because their surnames were Bowden, or if there are any death records of the same. I am willing to pay for copy costs and mileage if someone has access to these records. I do not know anyone in Fayetteville, NC who will do this for me. Margaret There is only one other alternative to getting older, and I'm not ready for that yet. I'm too busy diggin my roots and searching for more limbs to my tree. Diggin for Stewart, McConnell, Inglis, Herring, MacFarlane, Jones, and others on paternal side, Addison,Wright,Newell,Bowden,McDaniel,Foster,Renfro, Edwards on maternal side and others. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

About two years past, said Thomas left your memorialist and has removed himself to a distant State, leaving your petitioner with a young child in a situation little short of beggary and want.Said Thomas left her SO considerably indebted that after exhausting the small pittance of property which he left behind, there will be a considerable surplus of debts remaining still unpaid. Petitioner prays for an act vesting the further productions of her labor and gifts from her friends to be secured to her. The following fifteen subscribers state that they are well acquainted with Mrs. Ann BOUCHER, believe the facts stated in the petition, and are of the opinion that said prayer should be granted: JNO. HALL, OLIVER KITTS, ROBT. H. JONES, THOS. B. GLOSTER,PETER A. DAVIS, WAKE FALKENER, M. DUKE JOHNSON, RO. R. JOHNSON, WM. FALKENER,JACOB MORDECAI, J. G. BREHON,STEPHEN DAVIS, W. Said Rebecca prays foran act for her “releaf, now being in years, yet thinking myself able to get my support, that whatever I may hereafter gain by my industry may be entirely formy own use . . . and clear from any encumbrance ...of my husband, Elisha CAIN .. .“ Endorsed by fourteen subscribers. (GASR Nov.-Dec. 1807, Box 3: folder “Divorces, etc..) Published in N. C. Laws, 1807, p. 39. 272.CARPENTER, Sally and husband, Joseph. Petition of Sally CARPENTER, wife of Joseph of Currituck County, states she was married about twelve years ago to said Joseph CARPENTER, “whose dissipated conduct soon convinced your petitioner that what property they possessed would soon be consumed by his extravagance and waste - and, which ultimately proved to be the case.” She further stated that sometime past, said Joseph left your petitioner in a state of indigence and want and dependent solely upon the clemency of her friends. She is yet desirous of accumulating by industry a portion of property sufficient for a comfortable support, but knowing what little she can acquire will he subject to his wasteful hands, she prays a law to secure to her what property she mayhereafter acquire. (GASR Nov.-Dec. 1807, Box 3: folder “Divorces, etc.”.) The Committee of Divorce and Alimony, to whom was referred the petition of Sally CARPENTER, are of opinion that the clemency of the Legislature ought to be extended to [her] relief and recommend a bill he passed. See MANLOVE, Hannah and husband, George. 274.DANNELL, David and wife, Susanna. Petition of David DANNELL of Rowan County, 23 Nov. 1807, states that in or about 1764, said petitioner, being then an inhabitant of Wake County, intermarried with a woman by the name of Susannah FERRILL of said county with whom he lived for the space of five years. He enjoyed all the comforts of conjugal felicity and had by his wife, two daughters. During this time your petitioner loved, honored and cherished his said wife, and she appeared to have an affectionate, loving and dutiful deportment. Your petitioner removed to the waters of Holsten with his wife and children and some others for the purpose of improving their situation in Life, but instead of answering those valuable ends, it proved a time of sorrow, disappointment and loss. His said wife (forgetful of those sacred ties of matrimony) absconded from his bed & board & to his astonishment without any just cause on his side, took up with & attached herself to a certain John BAKER of said waters. Your petitioner was unable to reclaim his said wife to return to her duty as a wife and mother to two helpless females. After meeting with disappointment for about eight months, your petitionerre moved to Wake County, where he continued to live with his children until theYear 1800, when he removed to Rowan County where he now lives. But as your petitioner understands, his said wife is still alive and continues to live with said BAKER & by whom she has had several children. He further understands that his said wife and the children she has begotten since her elopement threaten that they will claim an equal part of whatever property your petitioner shall be seized with upon his decease. Prays consideration.(Enclosed) Bill to secure David DANNELL of Rowan County against all future claims of his wife Susanna. Read third time and passed. Nathaniel Vance is listed on the 1782 tax list as a taxpayer in Surry Co., NC. This information is from Ratcliff's North Carolina Taxpayers 1679-1790, page 208. How can I determine if this is a tax on property? Could it be a "head tax"? Any help will be appreciated. Julie
Friends of County Heritage books: We too were shaken by the events of last week. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were directly or indirectly touched by this tragedy. Meantime, we continue to work on NC and other County Heritage books. As we can see from many of the roots web lists, folk are diving into genealogy in a big way. This seems to help take our minds off the events of Sept. 11. We will prevail, life will go on. Our Country is very strong and we are united! It will gratify you to know that we're carrying on this important task of preserving our Heritage "one County at a time". As always, there is NO CHARGE to include your family story and picture(s) in these beautiful books. Here are web sites to hook you up with four of our North Carolina Projects. We'll have a site for Tyrrell Co., NC in just a bit. God will write the final word on this terrorist attack, says Christian counselor Alachua, Fla.--When you see the aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks in America, it's easy to assume that Evil is writing the story, but Christian counselor Steve Pettit says God always gets the final word and His hand is writing the final chapter. "These attacks make us feel helpless and terrified, and can even make us think there is a force out there greater than God," says Pettit, with One In Christ Ministries. "But Love always wins. God always gets the final Word on any tragedy, and for me, that provides a tremendous Hope." Pettit began receiving calls for help within an hour of the terrorist attack from families who had loved ones in New York's Twin Trade Towers. He says, in order to deal with the stunning magnitude of this event, you need to: 1. Acknowledge that God is still in control. "This isn't the time to quote Romans 8:28, particularly to someone who's just lost a family member," says Pettit. "However, it is important to see this event through God's eyes, look at it through the nature of God and not man's point of view." 2. Understand this did not happen independent of God. "That's not to say that God caused these events to happen, but it does mean they cannot operate independent of God's purposes," says Pettit. "Isaiah 45 speaks about 'treasures of darkness," meaning that no darkness is a surprise to God, nor can it pull events away from God's hands." 3. Be honest about your feelings. Pettit says you should be open about your feelings, fears, grief, anger, and rage. "Get it out in the open and acknowledge it," says Pettit. "In the Psalms, David writes, 'When I am afraid, I will trust in you.'" 4. Forgive. "On a personal basis, we need to make sure our anger does not crystallize into rage or prejudice, whereby, we fuel the evil ourselves," says Pettit. "This event is not just about the enemies of Israel attacking the friend's of Israel; it's also about God's Enemy trying to force bitterness into every heart in the world. We need to forgive; otherwise, fear and rage will lead us to make poor choices, personally and nationally. We don't want to make choices while focused on Evil, rather while focused on God." 5. Let anger work for you. "Although the Government has the role of responding to this type of terrorism, the Cross proves that sacrificial Love is the only force that can break the cycle of Evil," says Pettit. "Christ showed that only a Love energized by God could overcome sin. 6. Ask, 'How can we be a better people from this?' "A tragedy of this magnitude can lead us to live in fear, or it can inspire us to become a better people," says Pettit. -30- Submitted by Jon Walker September 11, 2001 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I missed the Social Security thing but these people should just be thankful that TODAY they have a computer. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. I hope I can still search for records instead of having my world blown up. When the ones doing the bombing take over we may not have the liberty of genealogy. Wanda Wanda B Ruby

He left his son John 100 acres of land "where he now liveth -- Caleb Ellis Line-- In Deed Book 8, pg. 775 dated 7 Dec. 1738 - we find - John Collier of the Province of North Carolina, Bertie Precinct-- sold to Henry Berry--- 100 acres of land, part of a certain tract of land granted to his father--- willed by Joseph Collier to his son, John Collier--beginning at a pocosin -Cabel Ellis Line-- Signed John Collier Note Cabel Ellis Line in both the will and the deed transfer. Also that his John Collier lived in North Carolina, Bertie Precinct in 1738. Now look at Deed Book K, Pg. 122 Brunswick Co., VA dated 30 Nov. 1741. William Gower and his wife of Bru. County sold John Collier of PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, VA 200 acres of land on the North side of Three Creek, Reedy Branch- John Jackson line -----. This John Collier's wife was Sarah Horton. They lived on this land until John died in 1768, We do not know who this John's parents were. We did a lot of work on the Surry Families when we were compiling the book we wrote in 1991 "Some Collier Families Decendants of John Collier and Sarah Horton-1741-1991" I still don't know who our John Collier's parents were. I wish I did. He and Sarah are two of my GGG Grandparents. I hope the above may help you. Teresa, I am aware of the work Paul Arnot did on the Collier Family. I have two copies of his work written at different times. I believe he was wrong placing John Collier with a wife, Sarah Horton in the Surry County Collier Family.
