The Native Americans were moved around a lot, some were orphans on Orphan trains, that went from town to town, until the children were adopted,. Not saying that is what is in your family tree, but they moved alot to keep from being discriminated against also. You cannot imagine the life the must have endured! My Aunt has confirmed meeting Hugh Preston Parks, who was the Assistant District Attorney of Fayette Co. TN. He was also an avid genealogist. He was also related to my Aunt's Parks family. My Aunt's Parks family descends from the SOMERVILLE, TN Parks family. Their oldest known ancestor is Moses Parks, who is shown in the 1880 census in Fayette Co., TN. I am now trying to connect Moses Parks back to his ancestors in North Carolina. I believe that Moses Parks is a grandson of Hugh Parks, Jr. of Mecklenburg Co NC, who was a Revolutionary War Veteran. I have the confirmation on both his War service, and that he recieved a Federal Land Grant for his services, and that land grant was given to him, was land which is now in Fayette Co TN. I have a copy of the orignal handwritten will of Capt Hugh Parks, Jr. (Thanks to a wonderful, generous researcher) I wish to correspond with any Parks researcher who is related, and especially who can assist me in making this connection back to NC roots. Best regards, Lillian Kathleen Martin
Need some help. Would like to eliminate possibilites from my list. On the 1790 Census there is a William Haynes in Edgecomb County listed with 2 free white males of 16 and up, 1 under 16 and 5 free white females. If you know who this man is would appreciate hearing from you. I have a William Haynes bn abt 1774 in Virginia who married a Mary Pryor bn abt 1781 in Virginia their children and their birth places follow: Samuel T. bn 1805 Virginia Lucinda F bn 1806 North Carolina Elizabeth 25 Dec 1812 Virginia William James bn 1 Jan 1811, Kentucky Paulina bn 9 Jul 1816 North Carolina Thomas P. bn 17 Jun 1818 Kentucky Nancy (have no date or place) Hannah (have 1816 in Kentucky but she dies before 1850. These birth places were taken from Census records. Either this man and his family moved quite a bit, or some of the census records are not correct. Pat

Thought some of you might find this of interest. Lynda ------------------------------------------------------------------- According to Dan Pierce, a Southern history expert and UNCA professor, "Among historians of early America there is an important and hotly debated set of questions about how people got land, who controlled the land and what that means. And among Appalachian historians there's been a recent debate about land ownership. There's a notion, which helped to build beliefs about Appalachian heritage, that everybody owned their own land, but in recent years that notion has been challenged." His comment was in reference to a recent discovery in Hendersonville, NC. Some 800 historic documents that had been locked in a safe for decades relating to land ownership in Western North Carolina have been purchased with donated funds by UNCA from a private individual. The documents dating to the early 1800s represent work by a family who were land surveyors and agents fo the Speculation Lands, 400,000 acres that were bought for resale by native Philadelphian Tench Coxe in 1795-96. He was one of the wealthy and politically powerful land speculators operating after the Revolutionary War. The records will help analyze land acquisition/distribution, gold mining, and international banking practices. The find includes maps, land surveys and notes, deeds, ledgers, and letters of correspondence with foreign investors. Among signatures in the collection are those of Samuel Ashe, who was the NC governor in 1795-98; Pierre Estienne DuPonceau, who fought with Washington at Valley Forge; and Smith Thompson, the US Supreme Court judge who presided in the Amistad Case. I am thrilled to know of the discovery since my direct line paternal ancestor was also a surveyor in the area at that time. Can anyone help with information on the Miles family who lived in Orange Co. as early as 1760s? I am particular interested in the family of John Miles b. 2/1717 or 1718 and died in 1769 Orange Co., NC. His wife was Mary and his children listed in his will included Charles, Thomas, John, and William. There was also a daughter (not named who married John Poe). Can anyone tell me whether their may be guardian bonds in Orange Co. on these children or were they all grown in 1769? Any help would be appreciated. Capt Hugh Parks, Jr. was a Rev. War Vet who lived in Mecklenburg Co., NC. He recieved a land grant from the federal government for services in the War. According to: MARY PARKS MCINTOSH, IN 1907, THE LAND FROM THE WAR GRANT TO HUGH PARKS, Jr. WAS LOCATED IN FAYETTE CO., LOCATED IN WESTERN TENNESSEE. (this is from another researcher) I have just read the excerpt from a book which deals soley with Land Grants from the Revolutionary War, and it says that the land granted to North Carolina soldiers was not located within the PRESENT day NC borders. So this makes sense. The land given to NC soldiers was located OUT of present NC bounderies My oldest KNOWN Parks man of this line is: MOSES PARKS b. 1821 NC, both parents born NC, married Mary A. Culp. Died 1888 in Fayette Co., TN He and his family are shown on the 1880 census at District 14, Fayette Co. TN This is the Sommerville, TN location. This Parks family founded the PARKS CHURCH and SCHOOL and CEMETERY there and are well documented at Sommerville, TN. I DO NOT know the parents of Moses Parks, but I believe that Moses Parks is most likely the grandson of Hugh Parks, the above described Revolutionary War Veteran. According to research posted at World Connect Project at www.rootsweb.com Hugh Parks, Jr. had the following sons: Lycan John Andrew William N. Moses Parks chose to name his own sons: Peter John Thomas If anyone can help me to connect these families or has advice, etc. please write back, Lillian Kathleen Martin
