Hi folks - I'd be most appreciative of any information you might be able to give about Capt. William Hamilton Sutherland and his ancestry. He was the son of John L. Sutherland and wife Elizabeth, was born in Rockingham County on 25 April 1830 and died 25 Jan 1925 at Hillsville, VA. He married Rhoda Jane Cassell on 05 December 1874 and had five children: Minnie, Walter, Alice, Edgar and Virginia Maude. John Sutherland, a saddlemaker who probably was born in Rockingham County in 1813, and his family of wife and seven children came from Rockingham County or Stokes County, NC to Carroll County, VA in 1848. All, except William and a sister Catherine, left, possibly going to Missouri, about 1856. William remained in Carroll County, from which entered the Civil War, achieving the rank of Captain, and after the war became Carroll County Clerk.
