    3. I am going this weekend to Rockingham Co. to find the graves of Sarah Jane GLENN SMITH and her husband Andrew Jackson SMITH (1846 or 7-1931), and any other family members I can find. Sarah's mother's name was Lieutisha Martin (1834-1888). I was told they are buried in Glenn's Chapel Church Cemetery in Ayersville, NC. Does anyone know if the name of the cemetery is related to this Glenn family? Thanks, Kim Lewandowski

Date: Sat, 05 Apr 1997 15:57:44 -0600 To: pio@census.gov Subject: Census Badge Sir: I have two census badges that belonged to my grandfather. He was the census enumerator for Danbury, Stokes Co., North Carolina in 1900 and 1910. They are in the form of a shield with an eagle on top, about 1 inch wide and 1.5 inches high, made from what looks like silver. They have imprinted on them: United States Census and the date. Do you know if these are official badges and can you tell me anything about them? Thank you, Lacy U. These badges were provided to the census enumerators in 1900 and 1910. They were required to wear it during the entire period in which they were engaged in doing the census. It was not intended to take the place of the census takers commission, but an additional evidence of their authority to make the inquiries required by the census act. The instructions to the enumerators were, "It should be attached to the vest under the coat and should be exhibited only when its exhibition may aid you in obtaining the information you seek." It could not be given or lent for any purpose to any unauthorized person, but could be retained as a souvenir after the completion of the enumeration. We are not sure what the badges were made of, but we are pretty sure they were not silver. Our guess would be they were made from zinc.
