    1. King/Bowen family

    3. I know this is probably coincidental, but I have an ancestor Sarah Bowen who married Thomas King in Jamaica. They had several children that I know of, one of whom was Thomas King, born in 1768, in Jamaica. I have almost no information about them but they may have migrated to America. Sarah Bowen's mother, Sarah Elletson Bowen, and an uncle Gooden Elletson, as well as other family members, were in Bladen County, NC as early as 1780. Family stories indicate that the latter group traveled from the London area to NC by way of Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica. Could these families possibly fit into the ones you are researching in Rockingham County? Ruth Bloom

    1. KINGS in Rock. County
    2. Joyce Hibberts
    3. Several of us here in Rockingham and Guilford counties, NC, are researching the KING line as descended from Thomas King and his wife Sarah. The lines here descend thru his sons William and Henry. Two other sons, John and Nehemiah, went to Georgia in the 1830s. It is possible that he had two brothers who came into the area (then Rowan County) about 1780s at the same time or before he came with his family. If you have any information on any of the descendants, please contact me. We will be glad to share everything we have discovered. Among the items recently added to our collection is a photograph of Thomas' gravestone which gives his age at death pushing back the previously thought date. Mapping of the several King cemeteries is taking place. We do have a list of many of the people in these private cemeteries. The predominate question is: where did Thomas originate? The supposed origin in Somerset County, Maryland, has been disproved; however, there are many more Thomas Kings in Maryland and Virginia who may be our Thomas. Another question is that of the listing of Thomas King, Jr. in the DAR records who is noted as serving as a substitute for his father and who was born in Granville County, NC, in 1762., living later in the 96th District, SC at the time of his enlistment and later in GA, dying there in 1833. Is it possible that this Thomas Jr. is the son of our Thomas? Joyce Hibberts joywhaler@triad.rr.com 1812 Starlight Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407 336-547-0755

    2. I tried to correct my message to the Rockingham list but do not know if it was received.. I left off a very inportant name in my message.. HUGHES Mary Smith Nelson Hughes who died at the age of 63 in1871 and is buried in Stokes Co N.C. as is her daughter Susan Letitia Hughes.. both in the Poindexter-Buyan cemetery in Stokes Co This family has ties to Rockingham also. I have not been able to find her husband William R. Hughes ' death or burial but believe he died between 1863 and 1866 according to some records. any help on this family is greatly appreciated and I am sorry for mess up the first time. Thank you, Elizabeth Evans

    2. Fredric Z. Saunders
    3. There was a cemetery survey done by the WPA for all NC counties for pre-1914 deaths (when state vital records started). These records are available through any Family History Center if you have access to one. The survey is not 100% complete, but can give you a start, and may have the cemetery records you need.
