    3. "SUNLIGHT ON THE SOUTHSIDE" transcribed by Thomas Walter Duda, Part 1 No copyright notice wa printed in the published text. Contents of Files sun001.txt - (Part 1) Background history, explantion of tithes, etc. <ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/lunenbur/taxlists/sun001.txt> Page #8: THE TITHES The list of tithes of Lunenburg County for the earlier years are almost a unique inheritance, as such records in many of the counties have not survived. Lists for 1748, 1749, 1750, 1751, 1752, 1764, 1769, 1772, 1773, 1774, 1775, 1776 and 1783 are embraced herein. Lunenburg County originally embraced all of the territory from Brunswick County westward to the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains and from the North Carolina line, northward to the divide beween the water of the James and Roanoke rivers. The first loss of territory from the original area, occurred in February, 1752, when Halifax County was created. It is therefore the fact that the lists of tithes for 1748, 1749, 1750 and 1751, embraced the tax paying population of that great section, which now constitutes the following counties: Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Halifa, Charlotte, Pittsylavania, Henry, Patrick, Franklin, practically all of Bedford, most of Campbell and a considerable part of Appomattox. It is a fortunate circumstance that all lists for the early years, 1748,1749 and 1750 are available. They present the earliest complete record, or census, known of the taxable residents of teh far-flund domain of the ancient county, embracing as it diden then, what is now the whole or the greater part of ten counties. ............. ...... .....

    1. [NCROCKHA-L] Re: Harrison/Burgess
    2. I am new to the list. My 2nd great grandparents were Landon Harrison c1790 and Sarah Ann Burgess c1805 who married in Rockingham County 1828. Landon was the son of William and Eleanor Harrison. I do not know the parents of Sarah Ann but possibly George Burgess. William and Eleanor Harrison I believe lived on Town Creek. William died between 1826 and 1829. Landon owned property in Leaksville. The children of Landon and Sarah were Robert David 1833, George Washington c1835, Joel Edward Green 1838 (circuit rider Methodist) and Sarah Ann (Brooks). Landon had brothers John, William, Zachariah,Starling or Sterling. All were born before 1790. I would love information on any Harrison or Burgess. Landon and Sarah both died in Dickson County Tennessee. Mary Harrison Gibson

    2. Bosch Family
    3. Hi, I am searching for the Walker JONES family listed in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Rockingham County, NC Census records. In 1850 Walker is listed as age 65, occupation is listed as none and that he was born in VA. Listed in the household are Mary, age 34, born in VA (his wife????) and Ewell, age 13, Missouri, age 11, Dillard, age 8 and Elizabeth, age 5 all born in NC. I have not been able to locate this family in the NC, GA or TN Census records in 1860, but in 1870, Mary is in the household of son Dillard in Polk County, TN. Any help would be appreciated and would be glad to share what I have. Children were John Will, James Roland, Bob, Mary, Latisia, Minnie, and Elizabeth. Where did the Alcorns seem to migrate from? Kentucky??? Does the Rockingham Heritage list the name of the person who donated the material? There is a cemetery somewhere around Reidsville that has Alcorns in it. Does anyone know where it is? It seems that the March 1st date may not have been correct. Here's an update I got today: Message: I just returned from a meeting at the Family History Center where I volunteer. I now have the true scoop on the LDS records that will be available online. First of all there are several different types of records that are kept at all Family History Centers. There is never a charge for use of any of this information (nominal fees for printouts). The main files are the Ancestral File, the International Genealogical Index, and the Family History Library Catalogue. The Ancestral file is basically no different than the disks sold by family tree maker containing ancestor charts. The info on these charts can be submitted by anyone whither or not they are a member of the church. The International Genealogical Index information can only be submitted by members. It consists of Individual data that lists birthdates, place of birth and parents. There is a marriage index that gives date and place of marriage. And lastly a parent index which lists all children in a particular family. The info is obviously only as good as the person who submitted it to the file. We tell people to use the data as a starting point only and NOT to take it as the absolute proof. When anything is submitted to ancestral file, you can automatically find out who submitted it by hitting a source key. The persons name and address will be shown. The same is not true for the IGI. You need to order the microfilm in order to find out who the submitter was. The church is currently working very hard at extracting as much information as possible from original records. It is an ongoing process that is checked and double checked for accuracy. As the data becomes available it is distributed to the libraries, once again at no charge to patrons. Neither of these files are going to be released online, at least not at this time. What is going to be released is the Family History Library Catalogue. It will be the most current version, more current than any library now has in it's possession. Basically the FHLC is a complete listing of every record in the possession of the Mormon libraries located anywhere in the world. You can search these records several ways. Locality, surname, film/fiche number/ and author. By finding out what is available you can then decide whether you might like to order the kinformation. Not everything is available for order. Many living people do not allow their books to be microfilmed. However, a library in your area may have the book listed. You can find that out through the catalogue. I have utilized this catalogue extensively throughout the years. I can save a lot of money if I discover that a film I am interested in ordering is in a nearby FHC. Now then, just when will it go online?? Good question. We were told "sometime in March." So it could be online as early as tomorrow, but maybe not. Don't be discouraged if it is not there tomorrow, just check back again. It is going to be online for about a month to see how it works. I have no idea what the plans are for future release. Anyway, you now have the facts straight from the top as I was told them at our meeting. The address will be Familysearch.org Hope this helps, Carolyn
