    3. I have a death certificate (dc) on Claude W. Miller who died in Statesboro, Bulloch County, GA, on 23 Jul 1983. The dc reflects that he was born 2 Dec 1915 in North Carolina. Seek to connect him with Gilford Preston (G. P.) Miller and Hattie Ophelia Bullard from Thompson Township in Robeson County, NC. The dc reflects his father as one Preston Miller and his mother as a Lela Mae Miller. However, G. P. and Hattie Miller were living in Thompson Township, Robeson County, in 1910 and there is no Claude living with them. Again in 1920, reflected in Thompson Township, Robeson County, NC, with no Claude in household. Census record reflects 7 children born with 6 living. G. R. Preston and Hattie are found in Bulloch County, GA in the 1930 census. In the household is a daughter, Liela Miller, age 32, a son, Claude, age 14, and a daughter, Virginia D., age 8. I have been unable to find an obituary for Gilford Preston (G. P.) Miller although he died on 9 Aug 1950 in Bulloch Co, GA, and is buried there in the Hendrix Cemetery. Hattie Ophelia Bullard Miller died 20 Aug 1941 and is also buried in the Hendrix Cemetery. An obituary for Hattie in the Bulloch Times and Statesboro News, Statesboro, GA (Thursday, August 21, 1941) is as follows: MRS. G. P. MILLER Mrs. G. P. Miller, age 76, died suddenly at her home near Rocky Ford Wednesday afternoon. Interment will be at the Hendrix cemetery this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Besides her husband, she is survived by five daughters and four sons. To date I can connect the following: 1) Alexander Carl Miller, died 19 Nov 1979, Bulloch Co, GA. 2) Lela Miller died 15 May 1969, Bulloch Co, GA. 3) William (Willie) Pope Miller died 27 Feb 1970, Bulloch Co, GA 4) Earl Pittman Miller died 14 Dec 1980, Screven Co, GA 5) Bertha Miller Newton died 28 Oct 1976, Bulloch Co, GA 6) Mattie Miller Newton died 27 Mar 1991, Bulloch Co, GA. That leaves 3 unaccounted for family members. One daughter and two sons. Any suggestions appreciated. Stephen Carroll Pearsall

    3. Hi Stephen - If you will look again at the 1920 census, you will see two children, listed last, not Millers, but a different last name that is the same for both children. Neither first nor last names are readable, but one is a niece age 12 and the other a grandson age 4. Claude would have been 4 since the census was enumerated in Jan & he would not have been 5 until July The closest I could come to their surname is Bullard. There is a Claud Bullard born 1891 in Smiths in Robeson Co on the 1930 census. He married in 1918. This is only a guess as a possible father. It's possible that the Claude you are trying to connect with your Millers was this young child on the 1920 census and either he was legally adopted or simply used the surname of Miller. Maybe they adopted both children. If you are unable to read the census record, you could order the microfilm from either your local Family History Center or library. There is a chance it might be more readable, especially if you darken it a bit with the film machine. It's likely that the child no longer living in the 1920 census died either at birth or soon after was between Lela and Willie (1898-1901). That's the only place there's a 3-year gap between children that I saw. Possibly this infant was buried somewhere around Thompson and I'm sure that one of the good folks with Peggy's "Vanishing Ancestor" books would check the local cemeteries for you. I hope some of these thoughts send you in the right direction. Good luck!
