Have you checked estates records in Dillon Co., SC? If Eddie didn't have a will he would have an estate record, and all children would be listed, and any immediately family member living would be listed. YOu would be able to determine within months when Eddie died as well. Donnelly wrote: >Hi, > > > >I am looking for information on William Edward ("Eddie) King (born 1850) and >his wife Margret J. No, more than likely estates records/settlements would have been sent long ago to the Department of Archives and History in Columbia, SC. Contact them with the name of your ancestor, the county he died in and ask for his estate records IF he did not have a will. If Eddie had no property (house, money or land) at his death and died without a will (intestate) then he may not have an estate record. A decedant had an estate settlement if he/she died without a will and had immediate family that any property was to go to. So, at his death, the county stepped in and divided the land between widow and/or children or surviving relatives. It was NOT an equitable process and it's wise to remember that this was a different time and a different world. The county court allowed the widow only 1/3 of her husband's estate (called her dowry) and children over 21 got their share right away. Children under 14 had guardians appointed to them even though a parent was still alive. That guardian took oversight of the property until the child was 21---and the guardian had the responsibility of keeping or better yet increasing the value of the property that the child was to inherit, otherwise the court would remove the guardian and try him. Once the age of 14, a child could name his or her own guardian. Widows and children in nearly every case had the contents of the home sold at auction to pay all of the deceased's debts, court costs, etc. If he had a will more than likely he did not have an estate settlement, though if any of the children contested his will then there would definitely be an estate record/settlement. You just have to look in the right places for your ancestor. Donnelly wrote: >Wow, thank you. You can also go to the link below and do a search on the South Carolina Archives Indexes that they have online. They even have some digital copies of some of the records online. http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/ -----Original Message----- From: ncrobeso-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncrobeso-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Steve E. You just have to look in the right places for your ancestor. There is a book about the King family in Robeson County. Sheriff Reuben King was prominent in mid 1800s. Donnelly wrote: >Wow, thank you.
