Don't know if this is who you are talking about. Rebecca Braswell, born 1647 Isle of Wight, Virginia, died 1700 Isle of Wight, Virginia, married about 1668 William West. William West and Robert Stokes were true patriots and took up arms against Governor Berkley's troops in 1676 in an effort to oppose the Governor's mismanagement of affairs, his unequal taxation, unjust tobacco duties, and unfair voting system. William West's father, Henry West, had been murdered by the Indians. It was during the Bacon Rebellion under the leadership of Nathaniel Bacon that William West and Robert Stokes were among the rebels. Robert Morris' Journal 15 January 1677: "Advice that West and others were in arms for the rebels and intended to surprise the fort." William West was captured 16 January 1677, but managed to escape. Richard Braswell, brother-in-law of William West supported Bacon's cause and petitioned the Commissioners for West's release. Petition dated October, 1677 -- "Petition of His Majesties most loyal and obedient subjects of Isle of Wight to His Majesties Commissioners, in behalf of William West, a rebel absconding, who took up arms against the Indians by who his father had been most barbarously murdered, was taken prisoner and carried aboard a ship, from hence to prison and was condemned to death, but had made his escape and as yet has not been found. We pray for his life and the restitution of his estate to his wife and children." Calendar State Papers, Volume 39, Folio 85. Public Records Office, London. William West will is recorded in Isle of Wight County, Virginia Wills and Deeds, Volume 2, pages 490-491, and proved 9 February 1708/09. Children: William, Richard, Robert, Mary Green, Rebecca, and my loving wife not named. William must have married a second time after the death of Rebecca. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fran" <awkoska@adelphia.net> To: <NCROBESO@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 26, 2006 6:20 PM Subject: [NCROBESO] 1800 William West > Would like to correspond with anyone researching William WEST who was in > Robeson by 1797.
