    3. If you missed "Indian Warriors: The Untold Story of the Civil War" on the History Channel, you can read about part of it in the book Between Two Fires: American Indians in the Civil War by Laurence M. Hauptman which was used as a source for much of the program's content on the Lumbee. The book has three main parts: "The Trans-Mississippi West," "The South," and "The North." "The South" recounts how the Lumbee of NC served as guerrillas in the NC swamp country in 1865 during Sherman's Carolina campaign; the Pamunkey of VA served as river pilots for McClellan's Army of the Potomac in 1862 during the Peninsula campaign; the Catawba of SC served as catchers of runaway slaves and as volunteers for the Army of Northern Virginia; and the Eastern Band of Cherokee served rangers for Confederacy to guard mountain passes and hinder Union operations in the Smokies.
