There is a memorial marker to his memory on the Fairgrove Road out from Fairmont. It reads: "NAZARETH MITCHELL BORN NORTHAMPTON COUNTY 1758 SOLDIER IN REVOLUTIONARY WAR 1778 79 AND 1781 FOUGHT IN BATTLES OF BRIAR CREEK AND GUILFORD COURT HOUSE SETTLED NEAR HERE 1787 THE FIRST MITCHELL IN THIS SECTION MARRIED FIRST SUSANNA THOMPSON SECOND ELIZABETH GRIFFIN FATHER OF MILES, HELLEN, ELIAS, HUGH G(?) DIED JANUARY 25, 1846 ERECTED BY AVERETTE(?) N.(?) MITCHELL" This transcription is from a photograph of the stone marker. I have searched for the marker itself, but have not been able to locate it. He stated that he was drafted into the service of the United States as a militia man in Franklin Co., NC on 10 Sept. 1778 for a term of seven months in the command of Capt. Brittan Harris. He furthered stated that he was marched to Kingston on the Neuse River and from there to Elizabeth Town. He then went to Monks Corner and Jacksonboro, SC. From there he stated that he went to "the white House near Savannah River in the state of South Carolina" and then to Chalk(?) Hill, SC. He was then in Augusta, GA and was also engaged in the battle of Briar Creek, GA. He further stated that he was discharged but again drafted for a term of 3 months under the command of Capt. Parish. He marched to Harrisburg, NC where his company joined General Butler. From the Rocky Ford on the Haw River, they marched to Guilford, NC and were engaged in the "Battle of Gilford". From this battle, he was marched to "Ramseys Mills", NC and there remained until he was discharged about 10 May 1781.
